How to hike Doi Luang Chaing Dao, Thailand's third tallest peak.
Located just north of Chiang Mai in northern Thailand, Doi Luang Chiang Dao in Doi Chiang Dao National park has what must be the best view in all of Thailand.
Usually this is a two day hike, but can it be done in one day? My adventure tour partner, Pete, and I attempt to do this 12km hike round trip in one day.

Trekking up Doi Luang Chiang Dao (ดอยหลวงเชียงดาว), Thailand's 3rd-highest mountain, north of Chiang Mai.

The night before the trek we stayed at the Chiang Dao national park headquarters, camping on the floor of their meeting room. We were driven to Den Ya Kat by 4WD. On the first day we hiked up to the large campsite, Ao Salung below the summit. We set up camp there then hiked up to the summit of Doi Luang Chiang Dao for the sunset.
The following morning we hiked in the dark up to Kew Lom Tai for the sunrise. Then we packed up camp, hiked down to Pang Wua where we were picked up and driven back to the national park office.
This is a very popular bucket list hike for a lot of Thais. We did it on a weekend in mid-January and there were about 300 people up the mountain, even though I've heard it's supposed to be limited to 150. Many of the hikers seemed ill-prepared and in inappropriate footwear. The summit was a photo-frenzy, the money shot being holding the Thai flag. Nevertheless it was fun, and a good community spirit, but go mid-week if you want to avoid the crowds.
We wanted to do this independently but it would be very difficult to do so. The national park and commercial trekking companies have it tied up. There are checkpoints on the the roads to the start. However it was nice to go along with it and have a porter to carry some of our gear.
The first part of this video, and the part at the summit were shot with a DJI OSMO camera. It's internal microphone was responsible for the terrible audio which I have done my best to salvage. The other parts were shot with a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 phone.

After a day relaxing in a village outside Chiang Mai, enjoying the sound of silence, a thrilling day follows, with going through hot springs of Chiang Dao and going to the doi luang chiang dao park and enjoy the mountain stunning view and having a drone footage of that amazing place.... all of that while riding Sticky the white Mazda truck .... we had to stop to cool it off at some point but that baby still running hot and strong.. through gravel and stone, asphalt and uphill and downhill nothing can stop sticky... except the heating going uphill :)
Doi Chiang Dao a 2,175 m high mountain in Chiang Dao District of Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. It is one of the highest peaks of the Daen Lao Range on the Thai side of the border.
Doi Chiang Dao is part of a limestone massif located six km west-northwest of Chiang Dao town and less than 40 km south of the border with Myanmar at the eastern end of the Thai highlands. This mountain is part of Chiang Dao Wildlife Sanctuary, south of Pha Daeng National Park.
Doi Chiang Dao is one of the most visited birdwatching sites in Thailand with over 300 species of birds, including rare species such as the giant nuthatch and Hume's pheasant.

Chilling in Chiang Dao | Craft beer, Ya-dong, Doi Luang
My 2nd time in Chiang Dao, the less crowded version of Pai.
Even though I wanted to escape the concrete jungle, I can't ever escape the need to drink good shit. There's a great and the only craft beer bar here called Microkosmos as well as a bar that makes it's own Ya-dong called the Cave bar.
Aside from drinking myself to death, what people come to Chiang Dao for is to come admire Doi Luang's amazing view. Let's chill.

CHIANG DAO CAVES - Not What We Expected!
Today we walked up the street from our accommodation to the Chiang Dao Caves - this is one of the ‘must see’ places when visiting the Chiang Mai / Chiang Dao region.
We love caves and find them fascinating, so we were very excited to see this network of caves. We had read all about them in blogs before going and had very high expectations, but once we were there our feelings about it all changed.
While the setting was lovely and the caves were impressive, we quickly felt sad about how this beautiful location was being managed.
Some information about visiting the Chiang Dao caves:
It cost 40 baht to gain entry to the caves, for this price you can walk in 2 chambers and see the temples. We would advise bringing a high powered torch as the cave ceilings are quite high and the lighting is not adequate or well positioned. You can pay 200 baht per person to go on a 30 minute tour which takes you on a loop through 3 other chambers. This tour is in groups, so pot luck as to how many people go with you. The guide takes a kerosene lamp. We’ve heard that it is not safety regulated in anyway. Old blog posts indicate that you can go through these 3 chambers without a guide if you bring your own torch but that is not the case anymore and they will not allow anyone to go into the caves without a guide.

We said goodbye to our jobs, sold all our belongings, and left Australia on a one-way ticket to Shanghai with just each other and our backpacks! We plan to travel the world for a year, see as much as possible, meet as many people as we can, and most importantly MAKE OUR MONEY LAST!
