Kings Beach Dolphin Stranding 10 Jan 2019
A female common dolphin stranded on Kings Beach in Port Elizabeth on 10 January 2019. She was very strong and the consulting veterinarian and Department of Environmental Affairs cleared her to be released back out at sea. We placed her on a stretcher and moved her to the National Sea Rescue Institute station at the Port Elizabeth Harbour. She was taken back out to sea and successfully released.
Common dolphins are pelagic animals. That is, they live exclusively in deep offshore waters. Sometimes, for whatever reason, they stray into the shallows of the bay and can become disoriented, since they are not used to the gradual sloping sea floor and thundering waves on the shoreline. If they stray to close to a beach they can get caught in the waves and are pushed ashore. If we get to them in time we can usually return them safely back into deeper water.
It does not help to put these animals straight back into the surf as they will just wash back on to the shore. In cases where a dolphin, whale, seal, or turtle strands on a beach, please contact your nearest center that deals with marine animal strandings (public aquariums, nature conservation office, municipal beach office, etc) as they will know how to safely rescue the animals.

California Shark Sightings, Pismo Beach, Summer 2017
Six shark sightings in the Pismo area in the past 3 days... so I thought I'd fly my drone this morning and see for myself. Literally seconds after I flew past the outside of the surf I saw the first shark. I didn't bother filming that one as some kids were about to paddle right out to where I saw it. Hats off to the Oceano Lifeguards for clearing the water in less than 1 minute after I told them what I had seen through the monitor. Wait till the end of this video to see what seems to be 2 more sharks swimming near the surfers and swimmers. I took this video at about 10:30 this morning at the end of Grand Ave. ( Friday June 30th, 2017) I hesitated to post this because of the reactions it can cause, but I did want people to know that this amount of credible sightings is not the norm. Even the salmon are in close right now. I've watched the fishing boats this past week and a half less than a mile off shore. (we can see the ocean from our balcony) So for my friends that surf, and others who enjoy the wave zone... just wanted you to know so you can make your own choice to keep going out right now or not. Watchers Become the Watched - Sea World Whale Watch
A pod of curious whales gave Sea World Whale Watch a close inspection when they surrounded our vessel five nautical miles Southeast off the Gold Coast Seaway.
The whales rolled onto their sides for a better view as they passed by just metres away from excited passengers.
