Best Single Month of San Diego Whale Watching Ever!
March was unlike anything I could have imagined. Humpback Whales tore through Southern California like the famished behemoths they are! Most of the time, Humpback Whales blast past the Southern California on their way to feeding grounds further north, but an abundance of bait in Bight has lead to many of these whales feasting in our waters before heading north. Much of the Southern California Bight has resembled a typical Monterey Bay day with spectacular displays of lunge feeding, breaching, and general awesomeness! In all the sightings were as followed:
148(!) Humpback Whales
117 Gray Whales
12,500 Common Dolphins
150 Pacific White-Sided Dolphins
8 Offshore Bottlenose Dolphins
10 Risso's Dolphins
3 Blue Sharks
2 Mola Mola's

California (Listeni/ˌkælɨˈfɔrnjə/) is a state located on the West Coast of the United States. It is the most populous U.S. state,[4] home to one out of eight people who live in the U.S., with a total of 38 million people, and it is the third largest state by area (after Alaska and Texas). California is bordered by Oregon to the north, Nevada to the east, Arizona to the southeast, and the Mexican state of Baja California to the south. It is home to the nation's second and fifth most populous census statistical areas (Greater Los Angeles Area and San Francisco Bay Area, respectively), and eight of the nation's 50 most populated cities (Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, Fresno, Sacramento, Long Beach, and Oakland).[12] Sacramento is the state capital, and has been since 1854.
What is now California was first settled by various Native American tribes before being explored by a number of European expeditions throughout the 16th and 17th centuries. It was then claimed by the Spanish Empire as part of Alta California in the larger territory of New Spain. Alta California became a part of Mexico in 1821 following its successful war for independence, but would later be ceded to the United States in 1848 after the Mexican-American War. The western portion of Alta California was soon organized as the State of California, which was admitted as the 31st state on September 9, 1850. The California Gold Rush starting in 1848 led to dramatic social and demographic change, with large-scale immigration from the east and abroad with an accompanying economic boom.

The Best Places for Whale Watching in California
Come and experience California’s year-round whale fest!
From the far north to the Mexican border, California’s pristine waters play center stage to much-loved visitors such as humpbacks and orcas, as well as gray whales, who follow the entire coast on their yearly migration.
California is one of the best places in the world for whale watching. Each year, about 20,000 gray whales make an epic 6,000-mile journey between Alaska and Mexico—and then back again. These massive, itinerant mammals travel from feeding grounds in the Bering Sea to mating and breeding lagoons along Baja California in Mexico. It’s one of the most amazing wildlife migrations on the planet, and also relatively easy for humans to witness, especially if you join a guided whale-watching cruise with knowledgeable crew on board. (In some locations, you can see whales spouting, breaching, and fluking from ocean bluffs, especially if you have binoculars.) While gray whales get the spotlight along the California coast, other cetaceans—including orcas, humpbacks, porpoises, dolphins, and gigantic blue whales—ply the waters at different times of year, bumping up your chances of seeing something amazing out there in the sea.
California is one of the few places where you can see whales year-round. From San Francisco in the north to San Diego in the south, these giants of the deep migrate up and down the coast, providing humans with one of the greatest shows on Earth. It’s easy to spot passing whales with the naked eye from California’s many points which jut out into the Pacific Ocean, however, nothing comes close to the thrill of seeing these majestic beasts up close out on the water. The most common species in Californian waters are gray whales, which make an astonishing 10,000-mile (16,090-kilometer) round trip each year between their feeding grounds in the Arctic and the warmer breeding and calving lagoons of Mexico. Off San Francisco and Monterey Bay, humpback and blue whales appear year-round, while blue, sperm, beaked, minke whales and orcas appear seasonally.
1. Eureka
Located on the shores of Humboldt Bay, Eureka, CA is the largest coastal city between San Francisco and Portland. Outdoor recreation is abundant, with activities like boating, sport fishing, kayaking, and whale watching all available close by. To see the whales from the water, charter a boat or take a kayak tour out of Trinidad Harbor. There are also countless sites to whale watch from land. The best ones are located high on the cliffs of Shelter Cove, Sinkyone Wilderness State Park, Patrick’s Point State Park, and Table Bluff.
2. Mendocino
The quaint, coastal village of Mendocino is a beloved whale watching destination. There are plenty of great lookout points in the area, including Point Cabrillo Lighthouse, Point Arena Lighthouse, and Mendocino Headlands State Park. You can even whale watch at the annual Whale Festival in March. It’s a wonderful event that features whale exhibits, educational lectures, and delicious fare from local restaurants.
3. The Bay Area
The waters bordering San Francisco are a seasonal hotspot for whale migrations. Humpback whales, blue whales, and gray whales have all been spotted here. The Oceanic Society offers full and half-day guided tours to the Farallon Islands, and San Francisco Whale Tours provides whale watching adventures year-round. It’s always a good time to visit!
The Washington Square Inn is ideally situated in San Francisco’s legendary North Beach neighborhood. It’s just a short cable car ride from Fisherman’s Wharf, Pier 39, Coit Tower, China Town, Union Square, and Telegraph Hill. No matter where you end up, the inn’s friendly staff is dedicated to making your vacation as comfortable and relaxing as possible.
4. Monterey
The Monterey Submarine Canyon in Monterey, CA, is a deep water canyon system that provides many benefits to year-round whale watching. Killer whales use the canyon as hunting grounds throughout the year, and humpback whales, blue whales, and a variety of dolphins and sea lions feed here in the summer months. Visitors can charter a boat out of the wharf for an up-close look at these incredible species.
Blue whales are the largest mammal ever known to have lived on Earth. They can stretch up to 100 feet and can weigh more than 200 tons. Can you just take a second to imagine what that looks like to see a whale of that size spouting out air and water some 9 meters in the air? Envision this massive creature appearing on one side of your little whale-watching boat and popping up on the other. Realize how it could tip you into the water if it wanted to. And when you go whale watching in California? You don’t even have to imagine. You’ll have the chance to see this living giant, along with a host of other creatures, in real life.

Navy Dolphin Gitmo Rally, San Diego
Protest against U.S. Navy Marine Mammal Program was held on October 22,2016 at the Naval Base Point Loma in San Diego CA. For years, the U.S. Navy has held dolphins and sea lions in small enclosures in San Diego (California), Bangor (Washington), Kings Bay (Georgia) and used them in many operations. Training is similar to that of a police dog and involves ‘positive reinforcement’ and the use of treats. The US Navy uses trained bottlenose dolphins to locate and mark mines on the sea floor or in shallow water. Other teams of dolphins and sea lions are used to protect ships and harbours, detect enemy swimmers, as well as recover equipment from the sea floor. The US Navy began its Marine Mammal Program in the 1960s, when it tested species including orcas, sharks and birds. It eventually settled on dolphins and sea lions. Although the animals are housed in the US, they are always on call to be deployed anywhere around the world in 72 hours. In late 80’s, insiders found that marine mammal intelligence & military intelligence were mutually exclusive & could not reliably coexist to even minimal national security standards. U.S. Navy finally admits NMMP programs are obsolete due to ROV/Drone technological advances that have replaced human ground troops & air support systems. 100+ dolphins and 40+ sea lions deserve Honorable Discharge. This $20-30 Million Dollar waste of tax dollars can certainly be put to better use for National Security or Veteran Assistance. #EndDolphinGITMO

Drones Over Dolphin Stampede and Whales off Dana Point and Maui
Drone films a dolphin stampede, gray whales, and mother and calf humpback whales.
Captain Dave Anderson of Capt. Dave's Dolphin and Whale Safari in Dana Point, California, at great personal risk, has recently filmed and edited a 5-minute video that contains some of the most beautiful, jaw-dropping, footage ever taken with a drone from the air of a huge mega-pod of thousands of common dolphins stampeding off Dana Point, California, three gray whales migrating together down the coast off San Clemente, California, and heartwarming close-ups hovering over a newborn Humpback whale calf snuggling and playing with its mom as an escort whale stands guard nearby, filmed recently in Maui.
According to N.O.A.A. Southern California has the greatest density of dolphins in the world. We have pods up to 10,000 strong stretched out for miles like the wildebeests of Africa. Over 400,000 common dolphin alone. We also have the largest concentration of blue whales on earth.
Capt. Dave explains, This is the most beautiful and compelling five minute video I have ever put together. I learned so much about these whales and dolphins from this drone footage that it feels like I have entered a new dimension! I have not been this excited about a new technology since we built our underwater viewing pods on our whale watching boat. Drones are going to change how we view the animal world. Wow!
Capt. Dave had to film this off a small inflatable boat, launching and catching the quadcopter drone by hand where a miss could mean injury to him from the four propeller blades or loss of the drone. He actually lost one drone on takeoff when it nicked his small VHF radio antenna on the 14 foot rigid inflatable he was filming from and it went into the water. Alone six miles offshore Capt. Dave , without thinking , dove into the cold, late-January waters off Dana Point to retrieve the valuable footage taken on a flight a half hour earlier that morning. I had my hat and glasses on, I was fully clothed with long-johns on to keep warm and my cell phone and wallet in my pocket, Captain Dave explained. It was a stupid move, but the copter started sinking so fast it was my only hope to get the amazing footage I had just shot. Since then he has attached flotation to the skids, which would save the footage, but every flight over the water still risks the DJI Phantom 2 quadcopter with a small GoPro HERO3 Black camera on it, as the $1,700 rig is not waterproof and the skids will not keep it upright on the ocean.
I get so nervous every flight over the water now, after the accident, my hands start shaking, explains Capt. Dave. My wife says no more drones if I lose this one. But she said that before I lost the other one. Now that she's seen what it can do, I think she's just as hooked as I am.
This technology, that offers such steady footage from the air for such a low price and is so easy to fly, is new. This was a ten or twenty thousand dollar copter a few years ago and flying those took a great deal of skill. I can't wait to see what footage this year will bring with this drone, getting a different perspective on the amazing sightings we already have off Dana Point. There is debate in many states right now about making use of these drones illegal. People are justifiably concerned about invasion of privacy. But it would be a shame to have this new window into a whale's world taken away.
Entanglement in fishing gear takes the lives of nearly 1,000 dolphins and whales ever day around the world. Captain Dave formed Orange County's first whale disentanglement group in 2008 and has been involved in disentangling several whales, including a gray whale named Lily, whose disentanglement in Dana Point Harbor made national headlines. He authored the award-winning book, Lily, A Gray Whale's Odyssey, which won eight awards in 2013.
Special Note From Captain Dave:
Attention any would be whale videographers: please only attempt this if you are extremely familiar with whale behavior as it is illegal to do anything that causes the whales to change their normal behavior with big fines- and the authorities do watch YouTube. Different areas have different laws on approaching whales. I am a whale watch captain with nearly 20 years of experience. All laws were obeyed by us during filming. In Maui we sat watching whales from a distance for hours before they moved closer to us. You can never approach them there closer than 100 yards. The Mom and calf as you can see in the film were completely undisturbed by the small drone. NOAA is currently reviewing drones and may create laws or guidelines for using them around whales.
