Sunrise humpback whales and dolphins
Dolphins and stingrays feeding at Fort Myers Beach fishing pier.
Very interesting video. Dolphins and stingrays feeding at the Fort Myers Beach fishing pier during low tide. I was surprised that the dolphins didn't eat the stingrays because they were so close to each other.
I also saw multiple stingrays and snook by the shoreline.
Humongous rare whale shark seen off Southern California
Go to PFOradio.com for more photos and the rest of this incredible story.
Just when we thought we had seen it all, a whale shark shows up in Southern California. Captain Ryan Gengler of the Triton from Long Beach Sportfishing could not believe his eyes when the mammoth creature appeared. We were about 7 miles east of the east end of Catalina Island when I saw it, said Gengler. I could not believe my eyes.
The whale shark seemed very curious swimming around the fishing vessel and bumping into it several times. He was curious, almost playful, said Gengler. When he bumped into us, you could feel the boat shake.
Ryan and Brad Schlerf were on board hoping to catch some yellowfin tuna in one of the most prolific tuna seasons in decades in Southern California. Instead, they saw something that few people have ever witnessed; a whale shark in Southern California. It was huge; I couldn't believe what we were seeing, said Ryan Schlerf. It was as if we had been transported to another world, said his brother Brad. I will never, ever forget this day.
It’s pretty rare, especially for this far north, said Dr. Chris Lowe from the Shark Lab at Cal State University at Long Beach. It’s certainly been an epic summer for subtropical visitors.
Whale sharks are the largest fish in the sea reaching lengths up to 40 feet and prefer warm, tropical seas. Their favorite meal is plankton which they scoop up with their mammoth mouths while swimming near the surface of the ocean. Whale sharks are docile creatures, gentle giants and will in some cases allow swimmers to hitch a ride. They are rarely seen in Southern California.
Sunday, September 14, 2004 was another chapter in this incredible year as abnormally warm water has brought with it a host of unusual creatures. A wahoo has been caught here, an estimated 400 pound blue marlin was lost at leader yesterday, hammerhead sharks have been seen, green sea turtles, puffer fish and more. But, perhaps the best of this was the show that a whale shark put on for the lucky fishermen on board the Triton yesterday. I will take this one to my grave, said Captain Gengler.
Hammerhead Shark at Miramar Beach in Destin, FL 8/5/2013
Took this footage of a Hammerhead Shark that was casually swimming in the shallows along Miramar Beach in Destin, FL on 8/5/2013. Hammerheads can be one of the most aggressive types of sharks, but this one displayed no aggression in spite of the large number of spectators and the kayakers attempting to coax him/her away from the beach and out to deeper water. Based on the length of the Kayaks I estimate the shark was about a 10 foot long juvenile. I believe the shark was actually sun bathing in the calm shallow water. Sharks like the sun on occasion and can actually tan, but they must continue to move so that air will pass through their gills and they can breathe.
