ITALY: ROME: REACTION TO TWA BOEING 747 AIRLINER CRASH IN USA
Italian/Eng/Nat
Some of the people travelling from John F. Kennedy international airport Wednesday just missed boarding the ill-fated TWA 800 flight to Paris.
Because of flight complications, several passengers had been asked to fly to Paris on the TWA 800 and then on to their other European destinations.
APTV spoke to one Italian man who was shocked and relieved when he heard that he had been put on a different plane at the last minute.
Passengers at Rome's Leonardo da Vinci Airport.
Among those hurrying to holiday destinations and meeting loved ones -- some very fortunate people.
One of these is Domenico Consales, who came very close to being the among the more 220 victims of the TWA flight 800 to Paris Wednesday night.
Italian-born Consales, who lives in Pennsylvania, was scheduled to take an earlier TWA flight to Rome.
According to TWA officials, this earlier flight was cancelled because of a shortage of flight attendants.
TWA staff then found Consales a seat on the TWA flight 800 to Paris. He would, he was told, have to fly on to Rome from there.
But while airborne, he discovered his flight was flying direct to Rome after all.
Flight attendants then told him that space was found for him aboard a Rome-bound flight so he didn't have to take the Paris-bound flight at the last minute.
His niece met him at the airport and explained what happened.
SOUNDBITE: (Italian)
You're telling me now it has exploded, is it true? The only thing I know is my flight was cancelled and they told me they were rebooking through Paris. I left at 7.30 and was told I was going direct -- New York-Rome.
SUPER CAPTION: Domenico Consales
An American woman visiting Rome said what she called sick people were behind the disaster.
VOXPOP:
I flew in TWA-- it was a wonderful airline. I just feel bad for the sick people who are doing this. I have a daughter in Perugia.. I want to bring her home.
SUPER CAPTION: American tourist
Investigators are still searching for clues behind the crash believed to have left more than 220 people dead.

NAPOLI - Italy Travel Guide | Around The World
Naples (Italian: Napoli, Neapolitan: Napule), in Italy, is the capital of the Campania region. The city is the third most populated municipality (city proper) of Italy, but the second metropolitan area, after Milan. It was founded between the 7th and 6th centuries BC by the Greeks and was named Neapolis, which means new city. The historic centre of Naples has earned the UNESCO World Heritage Site denomination. It has one of the biggest historical city centres in the world, and its pride are the 448 historical and monumental churches, the highest number in the World for a single city.
Sure, the city has a bad reputation concerning the Mafia, trash crisis (the worst is actually over) and some parts of the city are impoverished, but if you look even further than that and by excersising a bit of caution, you will find a vibrant city with plenty to see and do, a city where the large influx of tourists like in Rome, Venice, Florence etc... have not happened (for now) and have thus allowed the city to retain much of its original culture, allowing you to visit a hidden gem just 2 hours south of Rome. Its territory, particularly the iconic sight of the gulf of Naples (but also Mount Vesuvius, the music, etc. ) is arguably one of the most powerful symbolic images of Italy.
Naples used to be divided into 30 quartieri (neighbourhoods), however today these neighbourhoods don't hold much administrative use but are still used by locals to refer to parts of the city. Nowadays the city is divided into 10 municipalities. However this page will divide Naples into 5 districts and regions on the point of view of the traveller.
In Naples, some may find the actual conditions of many buildings and streets, and the rampant graffiti, off-putting. Others claim this is the immense character and culture of Napoli...and even the dirt and grime has its own flavor...a Neapolitan recipe for reality, and great fun. Naples' peculiarity is that the city centre is not the elegant part of the city. Just do not expect in the city centre the pristine conditions of many other major European cities, since the historical centre, unlike most European cities, is not the downtown. If you want to visit the elegant part of the city, you can walk around the wonderful lungomare (the Riviera di Chiaia or Via Francesco Caracciolo), and visit Via dei Mille and Vomero hill (main shopping areas).
Pizza comes from Naples. Look for pizza margherita, the original one, with nothing more than fresh tomatoes, basil, fresh mozzarella and a little olive oil. Eating a pizza in Florence or in Rome is not the same as eating it in Naples! Here the dough is thicker (than in Rome, for example) and is a little chewy.
Nightlife : Besides the bars in Piazza Bellini, Santa Maria la Nova, Piazza San Domenico Maggiore, Via Carlo Poerio, Vico Belledonne a Chiaia there are also plenty of great nightclubs and beach clubs outside but not far from the historic center of Naples.
Accommodation in Naples is normally cheaper than in Rome or northern Italian cities, but quality may vary a lot. It's not uncommon to encounter hot water shortages, short power outages and less than luxurious bed and bath linens. Also don't expect a full-sized bathtub in reasonably priced hotels. You may not even get a shower stall in the bathroom, but a drain hole that is in the center of the bathroom with a toilet, a sink and a shower head along the plain tiled walls. Breakfast may include weak orange juice (tasting more like powdered orange drink), hard rolls and an assortment of hard meats and cheeses. Nothing mentioned here is meant to discourage, but to help you view your experience as an adventure in Italian culture.
Naples is served by Naples Airport, also known as Capodichino Airport (IATA: NAP). Works are underway, but for the moment the airport is not served by any rail system.

Residence San Domenico Hotel, Trapani, Sicily, Italy #HotelReviews
I didn't spend too much time on looking for a hotel in Trapani. I decided to choose Residence San Domenico because of really good offer... and have to say this was a good choice. This hotel has few strong points: It is located in the centre of the old town with a walking distance to many shops, bars, restaurants, beach, train station, marina and airport shuttle bus stop. What about room? I'm not sure of you can call it a 'hotel room' as you get something more closer to a flat with 1 bedroom and 1 dinning room with a kitchen. That's very handy if you want to make some shopping on nearby bakery, veg stalls or bring some fresh fish caught at the morning. It's fully equipped as well so you can cook whatever you want. We had a pull-out sofa in a dining room so easily two couples can stay there. The only thing I could complain about was the location of the room - on a ground floor, next to reception. Just outside the windows was a hotel hall so you really couldn't leave it open at any time. I think it is worth to mention that reception works only at some hours. If you have to check in/out out of them you will have to pop up or call to their second hotel (Alle Due Badie Residence). Don't worry - once you are checked in you have a key to the entrance so you can come back as late as ou want :)

Brazil, Italy, US: Memorials commemorate mysterious airplane crashes
With investigations still underway and little insight gained into the fate of the Malaysia Airlines flight carrying 239 people that vanished on Saturday, the search for the truth continues. From terrorist attacks to power failures, pilot suicides to aeronautical black holes, the theories abound; but this is not the first time an aeronautical incident has perplexed experts.
On June 27, 1980, all 81 people on board the Aerolinee Itavia Flight 870 lost their lives when Italian DC-9 jet plane crashed en route to Palermo from Bologna. The crash was shrouded in mystery until last year, when Italy's top court ruled there was abundantly clear evidence the carrier had been struck by a missile. The Museum for the Memory of Ustica was opened on June 27, 2007 and displays parts of the plane, yet nobody has been brought to justice for the alleged crime and the perpetrators remain unknown.
A black granite memorial also stands erected in Smith Point County Park in Shirley, New York to commemorate the 230 passengers and crew who lost their lives on July 17, 1996, when the Trans World Atlantic Flight 800, a Boeing 747, crashed shortly after taking off from John F. Kennedy Airport. The National Transportation Safety Board led a four-year investigation which determined the cause of the incident as an accidental fuel tank explosion.
A memorial overlooking the Atlantic Ocean also stands in Rio de Janeiro's Leblon district, dedicated to the 228 passengers and crew on board the Air France flight 447 that crashed en route from Rio to Paris on June 1, 2009. A two-year search for the Airbus A330's black box ended in 2011, resulting in an investigation which attributed pilot error in responding to malfunctioning air speed sensors as the cause of the plane's crash.

Following in the footsteps of Bălcescu in Palermo
To visit the former Hotel Alla Trinacria where Nicolae Bălcescu died, and Piazza Garibaldi from Piazza Marina, in the short time before leaving from Palermo to Catania, we used transport by moto ape (lapinu in sicilian). In Palermo is taking a fight to the tourist to do sit on the seat : Bee taxi cab drivers against drivers, drivers of cars against taxi drivers, taxi drivers Bee against coachmen of carriages. Ape (Italian bee, also known as Vespacar) is a pickup truck and a dreirädiges the Italian manufacturer Piaggio scooter mobile. The Ape has been made since 1947 in Italy and since the introduction of the limited edition of 2007 in India.
So, we went from Piazza Pretoria on Via Maqueda passing through: Piazza Bellini, Via Roma and finally on Corso Vittorio Emanuele almost to the end, where we entered the Piazza Santo Spirito and Foro Italico Umberto I. On this avenue we entered via Butera and so we came to the house no. 24 where was the Hotel Alla Trinacria and where Bălcescu arrived on October 17 1852 at 9 pm. after a journey of almost three days by boat Ercolano, coming from Naples. Bălcescu was housed at room no. 26 but his health deteriorated rapidly and in the evening of November 27 1852 he died. Two marble plaques on the facade, confirms the passage of Bălcescu and Garibaldi there.
We continued on via Butera, Corso Vittorio Emanuele up to Piazza Marina and Villa Garibaldi. Piazza Marina was designed by architect Giovan Battista Filippo Basile between 1861 and 1864. Piazza Marina, had been used for Aragonese weddings, victory celebrations, and, unfortunately, public executions. In the villa there are busts that of Giuseppe Garibaldi, Rosolino Pilo, Giovanni Corrao, Raffaele De Benedetto, Louis Tukory. A bust of Nicholas Bălcescu was installed in 1961 in Piazza Marina (Giardino Garibaldi) of Palermo. The shock front is the inscription Nicola Balcescu grande storico e patriota romeno, morto of Palermo, April 29. 1819-28 nov. 1852, and on the left reads: Busto offerto dall'Accademia Popolare della Republica Romena in Occasione dello Principati Romen's Anniversario dell'Unità dei delle celebrazioni dell'Unità d'Italia - anno 1961 .
