This VLOG we went to Dondra town which is known for Dondra head, the tallest lighthouse of Sri Lanka! Not only that, it also has some of the countries best beaches situated in the area called Hireketiya beach (great for surfing) & Talalla beach. We explored the surroundings by motorbike until the moment when we suddenly got a flat tire.. You'll see what happens after ????

The most large Sri Lanka's lighthouse, and the most southern point of the island. Located near the city of Matara, take a tuktuk in the city to get to the lighthouse. Also you can climb to the top of the lighthouse and stay there to see the sunset.

Dondra Lighthouse is a beautiful lighthouse located on Dondra Head on the south coast of Sri Lanka. Dondra Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in Southeast Asia, so of course we wanted to check it out!
On our way back along the south coast, we wanted to check out Tallala Beach, but the weather wasn't on our side, and instead we went to the wonderful Goyambokka Beach a few kilometres outside of Tangalle city.

Самая южная точка Шри Ланки и Евразии вообще -- мыс Дондра. Дальше на юг солёная вода вплоть до пингвиньих поселений в районе Антарктиды.
Город в этом месте был основан ещё в 690 году. Поселение разрасталось вокруг древнего святилища Вишну, которое было разрушено португальцами в 1588 году. В какой-то момент и сам городо стали называть не старым именем Девинувара, а по имени мыс -- Дондра.
Причин посетить Дондру, по большому счёту, две: интересный храм и самый южный евразийский маяк.
В начале августа (одновременно с выносом зуба в Канди) в Дондре проходит празднование Девинувара-перахера. Праздник хотя и уступает по значимости кандийскому, но тоже весьма почитаем.
Маяк отстроили в 1889 году, росту в нём 50 метров, поэтому светит он далеко. За мзду малую вам предложат подняться на самый верх -- не отказывайтесь, если готовы к подъёму по узкой лесенке в немилосердную жару. Цена входного билета на человека: 3$
Dondra Lighthouse is located on the head of Dondara, the southern most point of Sri Lanka.
Dondra Lighthouse was built during the colonial period when the British ruled Ceylon from 1796-1948. The Dondra Lighthouse was originally designed in 1889 by James Douglass and constructed by William Douglass of the Imperial Lighthouse Service. The significance of the lighthouse is that it marks the southern most extremity of the island. Next to the lighthouse is a little mound with a plaque showing the exact location of the southern tip of the island. Another important feature of Dondra is that it is the tallest lighthouse in Sri Lanka. It is 150 feet tall and is octangular in shape.
The lighthouse is still actively in use. It helps guide ships along the Indian Ocean. Daily, a total number of approximately 250 ships at sea pass our lighthouse area. Most of them make use of the lighthouse signals for navigation. Dondra is actively used by sailors, fishermen, the Sri Lankan navy, commercial ship liners, and dive boat operations. It also transmits radio wave signals to surrounding lighthouses in Sri Lanka.

It is one of the four international lighthouses in Sri Lanka and also one of the tallest in South East Asia as well. The Lighthouse is still active and helps to guide ships and boats and is positioned at a crucial point in the Maritime route. The Dondra Head Lighthouse also transmits radio wave signals to surrounding lighthouses in Sri Lanka.
Consisting of seven floors and 14 two panel windows, one has to climb 196 steps to reach the top of the lighthouse where the view overlooking the ocean is quite breathtaking. However, to climb you have to get prior permission from the Ports Authority.
