Dongdaemun Gate (Heunginjimun Gate) at night in Seoul, South Korea
Heunginjimun Gate (Dongdaemun Gate), the historic Great East Gate on the Seoul Fortress Wall, dates back to the beginning of the Joseon Dynasty in 1398. The gate is now the last main gate remaining in Seoul after Sungnyemun Gate (Namdaemun Gate) was destroyed by a fire on February 10, 2008.

The Dongdaemun Design Plaza, also called the DDP, is a major urban development landmark in Seoul, South Korea designed by Zaha Hadid and Samoo, with a distinctively neofuturistic design characterized by the powerful, curving forms of elongated structures.
Dongdaemun Shopping Complex is one of Korea’s most well-known markets. It was founded in December 1970 as the largest of its kind in Asia and has maintained that status for the last 40 years. Browsing the plethora of shops, you can find fabric and clothing following all the latest global fashion trends. Dongdaemun Shopping Complex continues to build up its reputation as a hub of international design.
Heunginjimun Gate was built to protect Hanseongbu, which historically housed important government facilities. Heunginjimun Gate was the gate on the east side of the outer wall of Seoul Fortress among eight gates. It is referred to as Dongdaemun Gate as well. The gate was constructed during King Taejo’s 5th year in 1396, remodeled during the reign of King Danjong in 1453 and was newly built in 1869 during the sixth year of King Gojong’s reign in 1869.
The gate features a hipped roof which has five front compartments and two side compartments on a two-storied building.
One of the unique factors of Heunginjimun Gate is that it is the only gate among Seoul’s eight to have Ongseong, further exhibiting the style of construction used during the late Joseon period as well.

Heunginjimun, designated Treasure No. 1, was built to protect Hanseongbu, which historically housed important government facilities. Heunginjimun was the large gate on the east side of the outer wall of Seoul Fortress. Likewise, the name of Dongdaemun comes from the fact that ‘Dong’ means east and ‘Dae’ means large.

Dongdaemun Seoul, South Korea
Dongdaemun is also known as the East Main Gate and is Treasure #1. The gate is located in the Jongno area of Seoul. Take the Seoul Metro to 1 or 4 to Dongdaemun Station Exit 6. I just took a short video to give an overview of the area.

Dongdaemun Seonggwak Park (Great East Gate Fortress Park), also called Heunginjimun Park, can be reached by following the uphill road behind the Dongdaemun(Great East Gate). You can find many other representative attractions such as Dongdaemun Gate, JW Marriott Hotel, Dongdaemum Design Plaza(DDP), Cheonggyecheon Stream, and Dongdaemun Fashion Town near the park. The walking trail along the city fortress from Dongdaemun Seonggwak Park leads you to the Naksan Park.
동대문 성곽공원은 동대문 뒤로 올라가면 보이는 작은 공원으로 흥인지문공원 이라고도 불린다. 공원 주변에는 동대문, JW 메리어트 호텔, DDP, 청계천, 그리고 다양한 패션 쇼핑몰들이 위치해 있다. 공원에서 성곽을 따라 걸어 올라가면 낙산공원으로 이어지게 된다.
