Historic Door County - Shipbuilding
Nothing defines the city of Sturgeon Bay more than the shipyards that have been the county’s largest employers for nearly a century. Those shipyards put the city on the international map, building lakers that moved goods throughout the country, yachts that met the specification of the most discerning buyers from around the globe, and warships that helped defeat the Nazis in World War II. In this video you’ll learn how Sturgeon Bay became known as one of the best shipbuilding cities in the world and how the industry grew to define the city.

Historic Door County - The Stories of Door County Lighthouses
Door County Lighthouses are among the most recognizable images on the peninsula and its surrounding islands, and they happen to be one of the area’s most popular tourist attractions. These beacons on the shore offer more than a great photo. Learn about their rich history that helped the success of early industry in Northeastern Wisconsin.
Discover the historical significance of Door County Lighthouses in the latest video in the Our Door County series.
“These really are Door County’s most historically significant structures,” says director Brett Kosmider. “It was fascinating to dig into the remarkable stories of the people who kept the light in the early years, and how vital these were to the growth of the area.”
Maritime history is a large part of what makes Door County what it is today. Communities grew up around ports because they were transportation centers and because of the raw materials found there, primarily lumber and stone. Lighthouses helped make those industries (and early tourism via steamer) possible, because just as the Niagara Escarpment makes Door County a beautiful place to visit, it also makes it treacherous for mariners.
“Everything was done by boat,” explained Amy Paul, Executive Director of the Door County Maritime Museum and Lighthouse Preservation Society. “Even in the 1850s, you’ve got your lighthouses because of the boats. As trade became bigger and bigger up here, more shipping meant lighthouses became more and more needed because of the geological nature of our shores. That’s why we have different kinds of lighthouses – a beach lighthouse different from bluff lighthouse. They were also created differently to act as landmarks because people had to be able to recognize them to know where they were.”
Hear the gritty stories of the keepers who trudged up the tower steps twice a day with gas to refuel the lights, or who lived a lonely existence manning the lights on the islands that surround the peninsula. Find out how the lighthouses made the waters of Death’s Door and elsewhere navigable, and see these landmarks from a new angle in Our Door County: Door County Lighthouses.

Sturgeon Bay Waterfront Development Protest
Get Out The Smart Growth Vote!
...on April 7, 2015 for Sturgeon Bay Aldermen in districts 1, 3, 5 and 7
We remember and respect our roots in looking back to our ancestors who were sailors and also farmers. I was pleased to see a waterfront development proposal that originally included a year ’round home for an expanded farmers’ market and the preservation of the historic landmark grain elevator. It looked like a plan that would bring a vibrant center of activity to complement the Maritime Museum.
Bait-and-switch is a form of fraud used in retail sales but also employed in other contexts. First, we are “baited” by the advertising of something appealing, only to discover that what was advertised is no longer available, or we are pressured by sales people to consider something else that may be similar, but higher priced or of lesser quality, the “switch.” In the United States, courts have held that the purveyor using a bait-and-switch operation may be subject to a lawsuit by customers for false advertising.
In lawmaking, “caption bills” are used to propose minor changes in the law with simplistic titles. The “bait” is introduced to the legislature with the ultimate objective of substantially changing the wording at a later date, a “switch” that smoothes the passage of controversial bills or major amendments. Rule changes are also proposed using bait-and-switch to meet legal requirements for public notice and mandated public hearings. Then, different rules are proposed at the final meeting, with the “switch” providing a way to bypass public notice and public discussion of the actual rules voted upon. While legal, the political objective is always to get legislation or rules passed without expected negative community review.
In the case of our local waterfront development, first we saw the elimination of the Olde World Market in place of a 5-story “boutique hotel” which started out with balconies and a mansard roof.
If that wasn’t bad enough, developer Robert Papke decided to flatten the roof and remove balconies in his next rendition. Then, the Pollmans, who originally agreed to maintain the old grain elevator as a possible distillery, now announce they are not likely to proceed with the development of a brew pub unless the historic agrarian structure is leveled.
What the taxpayers agreed to see developed by the TIF was the “bait” and what we we are getting in the final result is the “switch.”

Sturgeon Bay Bridge
I take a look at an old friend of mine, the Michigan Street Bridge in Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin. (Note: One of the clips was made almost twenty years ago. In that clip, you'll hear me remark that the bridge, will soon be torn down. Thankfully, that did not come to pass) This video is a combination of old still photos, archived VHS tape, and some digital video recorded very recently. I have another bridge for Sturgeon Bay, see Bridges At Sturgeon Bay, on this channel. I also have a Door County Wisconsin playlist, which covers some other area topics.
