President Barack Obama announces reforms to NSA surveillance programme
President Barack Obama calls for ending the government's control of phone data from hundreds of millions of Americans, and promises that we will not monitor the communications of heads of state and government of our close friends and allies.
President Barack Obama is calling for ending the government's control of phone data from hundreds of millions of Americans, and he promises that we will not monitor the communications of heads of state and government of our close friends and allies.
The president said on Friday he will end the program as it currently exists.
He called for extending some privacy protections to foreign citizens whose communications are scooped up by the US
The moves are more sweeping than many US officials had been anticipating.
Mr Obama's highly anticipated speech, after months of revelations about US spying by former National Security Agency analyst Edward Snowden, said intelligence officials have not intentionally abused the programme to invade privacy.
But Obama also said he believes critics of the programme have been right to argue that without proper safeguards, the collection could be used to obtain more information about Americans' private lives and open the door to more intrusive programmes.
Mr Obama said the US had a special obligation to re-examine its intelligence capabilities because of the potential for trampling on civil liberties.
He also sought to reassure allies and others overseas.
The bottom line is that people around the world - regardless of their nationality - should know that the United States is not spying on ordinary people who don't threaten our national security, and that we take their privacy concerns into account. This applies to foreign leaders as well, he said.
He added, the leaders of our close friends and allies deserve to know that if I want to learn what they think about an issue, I will pick up the phone and call them, rather than turning to surveillance.
The leaks from Snowden, a fugitive now living in Russia, included revelations the US was monitoring the phone of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, sparking intense anger in Europe.
Mr Obama mentioned Mr Snowden by name and said the sensational revelations of classified spying programs could impact US operations for years to come.
While the president has said he welcomed the review of the nation's sweeping surveillance programmes, it's all but certain the study would not have happened without the leaks.
Mr Obama warned, however, that we cannot unilaterally disarm our intelligence agencies. He added, We know that the intelligence services of other countries - including some who feign surprise over the Snowden disclosures - are constantly probing our government and private sector networks.
But he said the US must be held to a higher standard. No one expects China to have an open debate about their surveillance programs, or Russia to take the privacy concerns of citizens into account, he said.
He also immediately ordered intelligence agencies to get a secretive court's permission before accessing such records.

International military aid to Iraq may offer little help
What are Iraq's chances of displacing the extremist group that calls itself the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria? And what impact can international aid, including military aid pledged by Iran, the United States and Russia have on the conflict? To unpack these questions, Anthony Cordesman of the Center of Strategic and International Studies joins Hari Sreenivasan from Washington.
Natural History Museum of Utah - Video Learning - WizScience.com
The Natural History Museum of Utah is a museum located at the Rio Tinto Center on the campus of the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States. The museum shows exhibits of natural history subjects, with an emphasis on Utah's natural history. The mission of the museum is to illuminate the natural world and the place of humans within it. The new building, named the Rio Tinto Center, opened in November 2011.
The museum was conceived in 1959, when the University of Utah faculty committee decided to consolidate natural history collections from around its campus. The museum was established as the Utah Museum of Natural History on the University of Utah campus in 1963 by the Utah State Legislature. It opened in 1969 in the former George Thomas Library and included specimens from the Deseret Museum as well as from the Charles Nettleton Strevell Museum that was located in the old Lafayette School on South Temple Street from 1939 until 1947.
In 2011 the museum moved from the old George Thomas Library location at 1390 Presidents Circle into the Rio Tinto Center, in the University of Utah's Research Park 301 Wakara Way, Salt Lake City. The move also resulted in a change of name to the Natural History Museum of Utah.
The Rio Tinto Center is a 163,000-square-foot building set in foothills of the Wasatch Mountains. The building's highest point is a round structure on the back or east side which houses the Native Voices gallery. The architects for the building were Ennead from New York City and GSBS of Salt Lake City. Ralph Appelbaum Associates designed the exhibits.

Liberty Hall 360: Revolutionary Wedding | Feature Film
Liberty Hall 360: Revolutionary Wedding is a student-produced film in two formats: ultra-widescreen digital HD and immersive 360° Virtual Reality.
► Watch in 360° Virtual Reality:
Witness a project 244 years in the making. Conceived and produced by Kean University students, with support of faculty, staff, alumni, and neighbors.
The film invites audiences to attend the wedding of future Founding Father John Jay to socialite Sarah Livingston, the daughter of the first governor of New Jersey. A colorful cast of characters leads the audience on an adventure around the mansion and grounds, as they experience the story through the eyes of Lucious Horatio, a rambunctious young guest at the wedding,
Two versions of this film were created to give audience and museum-goers the exciting experience of feeling like they were actually there on this historic occasion.
This version was filmed with wide angle lenses and in first-person perspective to put the audience in Lucious' shoes. And the 360° virtual reality version takes that experience to the next level. Using VR headsets, audiences are transported into a fully immersive environment - with the sights and sounds of the day all around them. It is not just a movie - it's a time machine.
Liberty Hall 360: Revolutionary Wedding was created through the collaboration of students, faculty, staff and alumni of Kean University across multiple disciplines like graphic design, history, communication, writing and theatre.
Liberty Hall 360: Revolutionary Wedding represents the past, present and future of Kean University.
