From Wikipedia:
Raleigh (/ˈrɑːli/; RAH-lee) is the capital of the state of North Carolina and the seat of Wake County in the United States. Raleigh is the second-largest city in the state, after Charlotte. Raleigh is known as the City of Oaks for its many oak trees, which line the streets in the heart of the city. The city covers a land area of 142.8 square miles (370 km2). The U.S. Census Bureau estimated the city's population as 469,298 as of July 1, 2018. It is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. The city of Raleigh is named after Sir Walter Raleigh, who established the lost Roanoke Colony in present-day Dare County.
Raleigh is home to North Carolina State University (NCSU) and is part of Research Triangle Park (RTP), together with Durham (home of Duke University and North Carolina Central University) and Chapel Hill (home of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill). The Triangle nickname originated after the 1959 creation of the Research Triangle Park, located in Durham and Wake counties, among the three cities and their universities. The Research Triangle region encompasses the U.S. Census Bureau's Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill Combined Statistical Area (CSA), which had an estimated population of 2,037,430 in 2013. The Raleigh metropolitan statistical area had an estimated population of 1,214,516 in 2013.
Most of Raleigh is located within Wake County, with a very small portion extending into Durham County. The towns of Cary, Morrisville, Garner, Clayton, Wake Forest, Apex, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina, Knightdale, Wendell, Zebulon, and Rolesville are some of Raleigh's primary nearby suburbs and satellite towns.
Raleigh is an early example in the United States of a planned city. Following the American Revolutionary War when the US gained independence, this was chosen as the site of the state capital in 1788 and incorporated in 1792 as such. The city was originally laid out in a grid pattern with the North Carolina State Capitol in Union Square at the center. During the American Civil War, the city was spared from any significant battle. It fell to the Union in the closing days of the war, and struggled with the economic hardships in the postwar period related to the reconstitution of labor markets, over-reliance on agriculture, and the social unrest of the Reconstruction Era. Following the establishment of the Research Triangle Park (RTP) in 1959, several tens of thousands of jobs were created in the fields of science and technology, and it became one of the fastest-growing communities in the United States by the early 21st century.

Wake Forest University, North Carolina (DJI Mavic Pro Footage)
Wake Forest University - a beautiful university north of the nice city of Winston-Salem - with wonderful background views of Hanging Rock and Pilot Mountain - once you ascend to the sky.
Founded in 1834 , Wake Forest received it's name from it's original location in Wake Forest which is North of Raleigh, North Carolina. The Reynolda campus , the main campus ( which is in the video) was started back in 1956 when the university moved to this location.
The University is private and was started North of Raleigh when the North Carolina Baptist State Convention purchased a 615 acre plantation from Calvin Jones called the Forest of Wake. This was ratified in a church named Cartledge Creek Baptist Church in Rockingham, North Carolina in 1833 by the convention. The school opened in 1834 designed to teach both baptist ministers and laymen. Samuel Wait was selected principal then President later. The large Wait Chapel on the Reynolda campus was named after Samuel Wait and was the first building constructed on the Reynolda campus in 1956.
As mentioned above - the University started in Raleigh but moved to Winston-Salem in 1956. In 1941, the school of medicine moved to Winston-Salem ( which was the second largest city in North Carolina at that time) then in 1946 after large gifts given by the Z.Smith Reynolds Foundation - the entire college agreed to relocate to Winston-Salem.
Today the University has more than 8,000 students and more than 5,000 undergraduates - more than 3,000 postgraduates.

Downtown Wake Forest, N.C. - Video History
Video 8 in a continuing series of learning the history of downtown Wake Forest provided by and This video explains how the current front of The Cotton Company was originally the back of the building. Most downtowns of old always faced the railroad tracks as that was where the potential customers were. Over time as railroad travel declined and automobile traffic increased then the front and backs of buildings changed. The Cotton Company is a classic example of the change that occurred in historic downtown America. The Cotton Company is a historical, accurately preserved abandoned warehouse rehbbed into a modern shopping boutque, having earned the Anthemion Award for architectural excellence.

HEADLINE: Vultures find watery roost
CAPTION: Downtown Wake Forest, N.C., is full of life, but a flock of vultures has found it a great staging area for its daily foraging runs. In the process, they provide area residents with a spooky spectacle. (Dec. 15)
[Location: Wake Forest, North Carolina]

[VO: Vultures hoping around on ground and rooftop]
[VOICE-OVER]
A FLOCK OF CROWS IS CALLED A MURDER. SO YOU'D EXPECT A GROUP OF VULTURES WOULD HAVE AN EQUALLY SINISTER-SOUNDING NAME. BUT ORNITHOLOGISTS HAVE COME UP WITH A MORE CIVILIZED AND ALLITERATIVE TERM. IT'S A VENUE OF VULTURES. UNLESS THEY'RE CIRCLING, IN WHICH CASE IT'S CALLED A KETTLE.
THIS FLOCK OF RED-FACED TURKEY VULTURES HAS CHOSEN AS ITS VENUE A WATER TOWER IN THE CENTER OF WAKE FOREST, NORTH CAROLINA.
THEY GATHER EACH MORNING TO WARM THEIR WINGS, SINFF THE AIR AND SCOPE THINGS OUT FROM THEIR LOFTY PERCH. AND THEN THEY'RE OFF.
THERE ARE NO CARCASSES AROUND THE TOWER. BUT THE AIR IS THICK WITH THE UNMISTAKABLE AROMA OF DEATH. PEOPLE LIKE RETIRED EPISCOPAL PRIEST MID WOOTTEN AND HIS WIFE, JOANN, FIND THEM EERILY FASCINATING.
[SOT/Rev. Mid Wootten, Resident]
(I see it as symbolic, sure. Sure. And even though I guess turkey buzzards aren't the most beautiful birds, I'm sure they still have a role in the creation and process of death and resurrection, is they way I'd look at it.)
AROUND SUNSET, THE SCAVENGERS RETURN TO THEIR TOWER, AS IF TO COMPARE NOTES ON THE DAY'S FORAGING, AND TO PLAN FOR TOMORROW'S FEAST.
TOOL ENGINEER DAVE SMITH WOULD HATE TO HAVE TO CLEAN UP AFTER THEM.
[SOT/Covered/Dave Smith, Resident)
(Right now there's not many. Maybe a couple of dozen. But I've seen at least a hundred, maybe 200. All the horizontal beams on that would have vultures on them.
[SOT/Dave Smith, Resident]
(Yeah, they're fun to watch. I guess they're interesting animals. But they sure are creepy, aren't the.)
CREEPY. BUT ALSO SOMEHOW MAJESTIC.

Wake Forest Reservoir MTB Trail Review
Today I'm trying out the Wake Forest Reservoir trail for the first time.
My spoiler conclusion is the trail had too many tree roots for my 26 inch hard-tail. I probably won't be back until I sell this bike and get a full suspension 29er.
The bike is great if you are looking for a medium hard-tail. It is a 1x8.
BTW, Thanks Spokes Cycles in Wake Forest for the advise about my front sprocket.
What was happening was my chain was popping off, not a lot but it was happening a couple of times on a rough trail. The bike mechanic said the only thing he could imagine it could be without looking at the bike was that the front sprocket was not aligned properly. It wasn't. I made the change and had no problems since. And believe me, if it was going to pop off, it would have on this trail..
