The 1639 Story: Slavery & Freedom in Wilmington, Delaware
This month, August 2019, marks the 400th Anniversary of the first known arrival of enslaved Africans to what has now become the United States of America.
Inspired by the New York Times’ 1619 Project, this is Wilmington, Delaware’s story: The 1639 Story. A story of slavery and freedom in the small “First State” with a strong divide, and the city that would play host to some of the strongest advocates in the abolishment of slavery.

Although most of its routes run in and around Wilmington and Newark in New Castle County and connect to two Cecil County, Maryland routes; DART operates bus route networks in the Dover area of Kent County; six year-round bus routes serving Georgetown and Sussex County, plus five seasonal routes connecting Rehoboth Beach and other beach towns in Sussex County and with Ocean City, Maryland.

Driving Downtown - Saranac Lake, New York
Saranac Lake is a village in the state of New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 5,406.[2] The village is named after Upper, Middle and Lower Saranac lakes, which are nearby.
The village of Saranac Lake covers parts of three towns (Harrietstown, St. Armand, and North Elba) and two counties (Franklin and Essex). The county line is within two blocks of the center of the village. At the 2010 census, 3,897 village residents lived in Harrietstown,[3] 1,367 lived in North Elba,[4] and 142 lived in St. Armand.[5] The village boundaries do not touch the shores of any of the three Saranac Lakes; Lower Saranac Lake, the nearest, is a half mile west of the village. The northern reaches of Lake Flower, which is a wide part of the Saranac River downstream from the three Saranac Lakes, lie within the village. The town of Saranac is an entirely separate entity, 33 miles (53 km) down the Saranac River to the northeast.
The village lies within the boundaries of the Adirondack Park, 9 miles (14 km) west of Lake Placid. These two villages, along with nearby Tupper Lake, comprise what is known as the Tri-Lakes region.
Saranac Lake was named the best small town in New York State and ranked 11th in the United States in The 100 Best Small Towns in America.[6] In 1998, the National Civic League named Saranac Lake an All-America City, and in 2006 the village was named one of the Dozen Distinctive Destinations by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.[7] 186 buildings in the village are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Bridgeport, Connecticut: Downtown Driving Tour (August, 2019)
A late Saturday afternoon driving tour of downtown Bridgeport, Connecticut in August, 2019. The police presence seen in the video is simply to close streets for a festival (Caribbean Jerk Fest) and not for any mass crime investigation!
Bridgeport was incorporated as a town in 1821 and as a city in 1836. The current population is around 145,000, making in the most populous city in the state and the fifth most populous in New England. The metro population is 940,000.
Bridgeport is located in Fairfield, County where the Pequonnock River empties into Long Island Sound. The city is just 60 miles from Manhattan.
The first Subway restaurant opened here in 1965. This is also the historic home of famous circus man P.T. Barnum. Starting on the right at 4:12 in the video, we get a really good look at the Barnum Museum.
The Barnum Museum building was completed in 1893 and was placed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1972. The museum houses an extension archive collection of P.T. Barnum and the history of the city.
The video ends at the Webster Bank Arena. This venue opened in 2001 and houses the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League (AHL affiliate of the New York Islanders). This arena seats 8,412 for hockey.

One of my favorite vacation destinations.
We stayed at the LedgeRock at Whiteface Mountain. Lake Placid home of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics is a tourist area full of activities. From fishing, hiking, and boating to fine dining. This town has it all. I also recommend Wilmington and Plattsburg, NY.

Green Light on the Southern Cross is my pick of music to go with this segment of my fall 2007 tour. As always, the images I use are stock photos which I feel best represent my journey. Delaware is the last of the lower 48 states I wanted to visit. It was getting a little cool at times, and the idea of heading south sounded good.

1950s PROFILE OF THE STATE OF DELAWARE THE DELAWARE STORY 54444
The Diamond State Telephone Company presents “The Delaware Story” — “the story of a free people in a free land.” The 1950s color film provides the viewer with historical, economic, and cultural information on the “Diamond State” (a nickname bestowed by Thomas Jefferson, we’re told at mark 00:40). Through color illustrations the film discusses the Native Americans who once called the area home (mark 01:07), the destruction of a 1631 Dutch Colony, and the development of other colonies in the region by Dutch and Swedish settlers. We see Old Swedes Church (Holy Trinity Church), consecrated in 1699 in Wilmington, at mark 02:45, and we look at drawings of some early log cabins before learning about the role Caesar Rodney played President of Delaware during most of the American Revolution (mark 03:55), as well as the colony’s role during the war and eventual statehood. There is talk of Delaware’s spiritual heritage with unfolding scenes from nature and various places of worship. Kids and adults are shown fishing, playing at the beach, or enjoying time at amusement parks at mark 08:00 as the refers to the state as “the nation’s summer capital.” The film touts Delaware’s art culture by showing us the Wilmington Art Center (mark 08:37) and later re-enactments from Colonial life before looking at some of its rich architectural designs starting near mark 09:45. In praising the state’s dedication to education, students stroll the grounds at the University of Delaware (mark 11:18) and Delaware State College, and we later learn of the state’s rich history of material trade (mark 12:05). At mark 14:25 the film tells us the history of the first telephone service in Delaware, dating to 1878, before reviewing various industries that call “The First State” home, as well as small, local businesses (mark 17:50) as we see scenes from bakeries, jewelry stores, and other shops, as well as farms that produce countless crops and costal waters that provide seafood (mark 19:35). Cars speed across the Delaware Memorial Bridge (mark 21:28) as the picture changes its focus to transportation and its population boom.
We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! See something interesting? Tell people what it is and what they can see by writing something for example: 01:00:12:00 -- President Roosevelt is seen meeting with Winston Churchill at the Quebec Conference.
