The New Orleans Art Center: St. Claude’s biggest gallery
Christina Juran and Herman Kron began operating The New Orleans Art Center, a 6,000-square-foot art gallery, a year ago. The center, built inside a former two-story medical building at 3330 St. Claude Ave., is by far, the largest art display space in

On September 17, 1960, just across the street, events happened – that when combined with similar movements across the South –would forever change this country. These events played a lasting and significant role in the American Civil Rights movement.
What you see on this striking mural is the retelling of one of the most famous sit-ins in American history. Designed by local artist, Kristen Downing, in collaboration with the Young Artist Movement (YAM), this mural memorializes the arrest of Oretha Castle Haley and 3 fellow non-violent civil rights activists at the McCrory’s lunch counter. This scene represents the reality the black community faced during that time. Segregation was enforced and these four were at a “whites only” counter.
This was one of two high-profile sit-ins led by the New Orleans chapter of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) in an attempt to desegregate Canal Street lunch counters. During each sit-in, an arrest would promptly follow. Downing’s illustration of who became known as the CORE Four intentionally leaves their faces without expression, allowing the viewer to imagine what each individual might have been thinking in the moment.
More importantly, this mural is not where the story ends.
This climate of racial inequality rattled much of the United States during the 1960s, and this was more than just an isolated instance of injustice. This case made it all the way to the US Supreme Court, where the case of Lombard v. Louisiana in 1963 would pave the way for desegregation across the United States. The four arrests were overturned, and Canal Street would start a new chapter.
With the hostel’s proximity to the first New Orleans lunch counter sit-ins, Downing and the youth artists were drawn to telling an under-told story and moving past common or stereotypical images of the Crescent City.

New Orleans Folk Artist Varg Vargas peddles the wares while rained out.
Artist Lance 'Varg' Vargas creates folk art using found wood and
objects from around the city. His favorite materials to work with are New
Orleans' most common antique woods, longleaf heartwood and swamp
cypress - woods rare throughought the United States but commonly found in early New Orleans housing stock. This lumber is becoming more
available for reclaimers due to ongoing renovations / demolitions of houses citywide.
Varg's inspiration comes from the philosophy of humanism, an approach in study, philosophy, world view or practice that focuses on human values and concerns, attaching prime importance to humans and their condition, the joys, sorrow, stuggles, triumphs etc.
I have made a rule for myself that I will use restored and salvaged material in every piece I do. As a result of the flood, there is a ton of great wood with a lot of stories to tell sitting on the side of the road throughout New Orleans. I'm just trying to grab as much of it as I can and turn it into something and get a little more life out of it.
He makes his art in his 12' x 10 foot shed on days when weather permits.
Varg finds joy in folk ballads, stringed instruments, female vocalists, general relativity and quantum mechanics, historic highways, bunny rabbits, public radio, neuroscience, brass bands, hoppy beers and amber spirits.
He currently lives in the Algiers Point neighborhood of New Orleans.
Varg began creating art from salvaged wood shortly after the combined
experiences of the 2007 Carnival celebration and refinishing his hardwood floors in 2006. His admiration of how heartpine reacts to sanding, staining and finishing prompted his first few pieces and matured into his current work.
More than anything, I despise waste. Particularly as it relates to organic matter. Trees are magnificent. They were here before we arrived and they'll be around after we are gone. I'm making an effort to save as much wood as possible. Creating art is fun too. But beyond communicating with folks, beyond rescuing flooded parts, beyond reveling in the ethereal aroma of heartpine that hasn't seen the light of day in 400 years, beyond all that I am trying to make a comment on waste.

Visionary Spiritual Leon Kennedy: Black American Folk artist
Visionary Spiritual Leon Kennedy: Black American Folk artist.
African-American spiritual visionary Leon Kennedy (b. 1945, Houston, Texas) uses mixed media on found objects to paint ecstatic visions, memory paintings, and urban life portraits. Kennedy is featured on several pages of Rosnak's Contemporary American Folk Art (Abbeville, 1996), and in Betty-Carol Sellen's important survey, Self Taught, Outsider, and Folk Art (McFarland & Company, 1999).
In 1997, the Smithsonian Institution purchased 200 significant works from the renowned Rosenak collection for an undisclosed sum estimated to be near $2M. This acquisition included a bed-sheet by Kennedy. The 1997 Folk Art Messenger, Vol. 10, No.3, reported that the acquisition makes the Smithsonian American Art Museum the world's preeminent repository for American self-taught art.
It is our desire to see them as part of the history of 20th-century American art, said Chuck Rosenak.
Mentioning Kennedy, the article notes these works were the first American collection exhibited at the Collection de l'Art Brut, Switzerland, which testifies to its quality and uniqueness. The Leon Kennedy masterwork now resides at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, while photos of Kennedy and other materials of Kennedy's are available for study at the National Archives in Washington, D.C.

born May 19, 1892 Pops Foster, I Would Do Anything for You
George Murphy Pops Foster (May 19, 1892 – October 29, 1969) was a jazz musician best known for his vigorous slap bass playing of the string bass. He also played the tuba and trumpet professionally.
Foster was born to Charley and Annie Foster, who was nearly fullblooded Cherokee, on a plantation near McCall in Ascension Parish near Donaldsonville in south Louisiana. His family moved to New Orleans when he was about 10 years of age. His older brother, Willard Foster, began playing banjo and guitar; George started out on a cello then switched to string bass. Foster married twice: to Bertha Foster in 1912 and Alma Foster in 1936.
Pops Foster was playing professionally by 1907 and worked with Jack Carey, Kid Ory, Armand Piron, King Oliver and other prominent hot bands of the era.
In 1921 he moved to St. Louis to play with the Charlie Creath and Dewey Jackson bands, in which he would be active for much of the decade. He also joined Ory in Los Angeles. He acquired the nickname Pops because he was far older than any of the other players in the band.
In 1929 Foster moved to New York City, where he played with the bands of Luis Russell and Louis Armstrong through 1940. He gigged with various New York-based bands through the 1940s, including those of Sidney Bechet, Art Hodes, and regular broadcasts on the national This Is Jazz radio program. He also recorded for the Mezzrow-Bechet Quintet (Bechet, Mezz Mezzrow, Fitz Weston, and Kaiser Marshall) and Septet (on two consecutive dates in 1945, with Pappa Snow White, Jimmy Blythe, Jr., Danny Barker and Sid Catlett, and on the second session with Pleasant Joe on vocals).
In the late 1940s he began touring more widely and played in many countries in Europe, especially in France, and throughout the United States including returns to New Orleans and California.
In 1952, Foster toured Europe with Jimmy Archey's Band. He played regularly at Central Plaza in New York and briefly in New Orleans with Papa Celestin in 1954.
In the late 1950s and early 1960s, he played with Earl Hines' Small Band. In 1966, he toured Europe with the New Orleans All-Stars but remained based in San Francisco, where he died.
The Autobiography of Pops Foster was published in 1971, with a new edition in 2005.

DON'T FALL APART ON ME TONIGHT - AARON NEVILLE - (1993)
AARON NEVILLE (born January 24, 1941, New Orleans, Louisiana) is an American soul and R&B singer and musician. He has had four top-20 hits in the United States (including three that went to number one on Billboard's adult contemporary chart and one that went to number one on the R&B chart) along with four platinum-certified albums. He has also recorded with his brothers Art, Charles and Cyril as The Neville Brothers and is the father of singer/bassist Ivan Neville. Of mixed African American and Native American heritage, his music also features Cajun and Creole influences.
Career
Neville's first major hit single was Tell It Like It Is, which topped Billboard's R&B chart for five weeks in 1967 and also reached #2 on the Hot 100. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. A remake of the song was a Top 10 Pop hit for the Rock group Heart featuring Ann and Nancy Wilson in 1981. In 1989 Neville teamed up with Linda Ronstadt on the album Cry Like a Rainstorm, Howl Like the Wind. Among the duets recorded for the disc were the #1 Grammy-winning hits Don't Know Much and All My Life. Don't Know Much earned a million-selling Gold single, while the album was certified Triple Platinum for US sales of more than 3 million. His other hits have included Everybody Plays the Fool, his 1991 cover of the 1972 Main Ingredient song, that reached #8 on the Hot 100; Don't Take Away My Heaven, Hercules and Can't Stop My Heart From Loving You (The Rain Song). Neville's biggest solo successes have been on the Adult Contemporary chart, where Don't Know Much, All My Life, and Everybody Plays the Fool all reached Number One in 8 European countries. In August 2005, his home in Eastern New Orleans was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina; he evacuated to Memphis, Tennessee before the hurricane hit. He moved to Nashville after the storm. and had yet to return to the city as of early 2008, causing the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival to temporarily change its tradition of having the Neville Brothers close the festival. However, the Neville Brothers, including Aaron, returned for the 2008 Jazzfest, which returned to its traditional seven-day format for the first time since Katrina. Neville is in the process of moving back to the New Orleans area, namely the North Shore city of Covington. Neville performed Randy Newman's Louisiana 1927 during NBC's A Concert for Hurricane Relief on September 2, 2005. Neville signed to SonyBMG's new Burgundy Records label in late 2005 and recorded an album of songs by Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, Sam Cooke and others for Bring It on Home...The Soul Classics, released on September 19, 2006. The album, produced by Stewart Levine, features collaborations between Neville and Chaka Khan, Mavis Staples, Chris Botti, David Sanborn, Art Neville, and others. The album's first single was a remake of The Impressions' 1963 classic It's All Right. Neville with his distinctive mole visible above his right eye (1990) Neville's career has included work for television, movies and sporting events. Neville sang the National Anthem in the movie The Fan starring Robert De Niro and Wesley Snipes. He also sang the anthem at the WWF's SummerSlam 1993 and at WCW Spring Stampede in 1994. Neville sang the theme music to the children's TV series Fisher-Price Little People. He also sang a new version of Cotton, for Cotton, Inc. which was introduced during the 1992 Summer Olympics. In 1988 he recorded Mickey Mouse March for Stay Awake: Various Interpretations of Music from Vintage Disney Films, one of Various Artists. In 2006, Neville performed The Star-Spangled Banner, alongside Queen Of Soul Aretha Franklin and Dr. John on keyboard at Super Bowl XL in Detroit, Michigan. The performance was widely panned, however. In addition, Neville (along with brothers Art and Cyril) did background vocals for the songs Great Heart, Bring Back the Magic, Homemade Music, My Barracuda, and Smart Woman (in a Real Short Skirt) on Jimmy Buffett's Hot Water, released in 1988. On October 27, 2006, Neville made a guest appearance on an episode of the soap opera The Young and the Restless. He sang Stand By Me and Ain't No Sunshine, from his album, Bring It on Home ... The Soul Classics. In 2008 he released Gold, which includes a double album of his hits.
In 2009, Neville, along with the Mt. Zion Mass Choir, released a version of the song A Change Is Gonna Come on the compilation album, Oh Happy Day. On December 12, 2010, while performing at Baton Rouge's Manship Theater in the Shaw Center, Neville was inducted into The Louisiana Music Hall Of Fame. Neville is an inductee of the Delta Music Museum Hall of Fame in Ferriday, Louisiana.

DON'T FALL APART ON ME TONIGHT - AARON NEVILLE - tradução
No palácio do Papa
Talvez eu tivesse feito algum bem neste mundo
Talvez eu tivesse feito algum bem neste mundo
Talvez eu tivesse feito algum bem neste mundo
