INTRODUCTION
Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is an estuarine mangrove habitat, which is declared as the bird sanctuary, and located on western tip of the Island of Chorão along the Mandovi River, Goa, in India. The sanctuary is named after Salim Ali, the eminent Indian ornithologist.
The sanctuary and island are accessed by a ferry service running between Ribander and Chorão.
The sanctuary has a paved walk that runs between mangroves of Rhizophora mucronata, Avicennia officinalis and other species.
The size of the sanctuary is 178 ha (440 acres). The area is covered by low mangrove forest.
Several species of birds have been recorded and the common species include the striated heron and western reef heron. Other species that have been recorded include the little bittern, black bittern, red knot, jack snipe and pied avocet (on transient sandbanks).
The sanctuary is also host to mudskippers, fiddler crabs and other mangrove habitat specialists. A species of crustacean Teleotanais indianis was described based on specimens obtained in the sanctuary.

One of the most beautiful place in Goa, lies within the Panjim City, You can see lots of birds at Morning or Evening. It is an estuarine mangrove habitat and located on western tip of the Choro Island.
Although it's just a 3km from Panjim, but not a famous, very less people know about this

The Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is situated at Chorao Island on the Mandovi River. It has been named after the famous ornithologist of India, Dr. Salim Ali.
We did just the Boat ride through the mangroves and did not actually take a walk through the sanctuary.
We reached there late at around 12pm. The ideal time to visit this place is between 6:30 am to 8:30 am or at the Sunset time.
The right season to visit is from October to March. So, I guess we were at the wrong time and wrong season. The forest department boat costed around Rs75 per person and the entry fee to the sanctuary was around Rs 20. Cameras, etc are charged extra about Rs 150 to Rs 200.
Although we didn't see much birds around and it had started to pour being the monsoon season, the boat ride through these mangroves was very relaxing and unique and was totally worth the trip.
The guy took us to some common spots where birds are spotted, we did see a Kite sheltering from the rain in the bushes, but that's about it and it wasn't our day or time.
After some time, it stopped raining and the skies although still dark had started to clear off a bit so although I had not really planned, I decided to do a small fly by with my tiny Dji Spark. This video is about what I could get from the two short flights I could manage.

Dr Salim Ali bird sanctuary is located in Chorao island in Goa. It has dense mangrove forests and is an open sanctuary. The bird season is from October to March. During monsoons, it is devoid of birds, but a walk through the sanctuary is still beautiful amidst the mangroves, swamps and of course the crabs. You may be lucky and catch sight of a crocodile too.
