Driving Creek Railway - Coromandel, New Zealand (HD)
In this production, we visit the Driving Creek Railway centered just north of the Coromandel town. We take a ride on this stunning narrow gauge mountain railway built by the late Barry Brickell in order to transport clay from the top of the hill in order to produce his pottery. The railway is unique as it has the 'zig-zag' formation which requires the train to change direction at certain reversing points in order to climb the steep grades up to the Eyeful tower providing spectacular views of the Coromandel. The railway also runs through three short tunnels, climbs 2 spirals and crosses over many high viaducts such as the iconic double decker viaduct seen in this production. The overall trip up to the Eyeful tower takes around an hour and the railway features New Zealand's tightest curves and steepest gradients for rail. ‘Driving Creek Railway and Potteries' is the country’s only narrow-gauge hill railway that begun in 1975 and built mostly by hand by Barry Brickell, a rail enthusiast and potter who originally wanted all weather access to the clay and pine wood for his kilns. Today it is one of the top visitor attractions on the Coromandel Peninsula, a 'Must Do' when visiting Coromandel Town. Enjoy a delightful ride through New Zealand native bush, crossing over one of the many viaducts, tunnels and spirals before reaching the terminus at the mountain top called the 'Eyefull Tower' that offers stunning panoramic views of the Hauraki Gulf.

Welcome to Driving Creek Rail!
The Driving Creek Railway climbs 2.7km from the Base Station at 55 metres above sea level to EyeFull Tower at 167 metres above sea level, a total climb of 115 metres. With an average gradient of 1-in-24.1 (1 vertical metre for every 24.1 metre of length) the Driving Creek Railway is New Zealand’s steepest railway. Unlike most other tourist railways, this railway is newly built rather than being an old line that has been restored. It is New Zealand’s only narrow-gauge mountain railway.

Ein neuer Tag auf Coromandel! Wir frühstücken und fahren danach mit dem Bus zu 'Driving Creek Railway & Potteries'. Einer ehemaligen privaten Töpferei. Der Zug war nur zur Beförderung von dort abgebautem Ton gedacht, wurde aber dann für den Tourismus geöffnet. Gott sei Dank! Es war ein Erlebnis :)

New Zealand potter, Barry Brickell, built himself a narrow gauge railway in order to access a supply of pottery clay on his large property. In time this has become a passenger carrying tourist attraction in the rugged Coromandel Peninsular.
