After a long Winter, my girlfriend and I took advantage of a beautiful Easter Sunday hiking in Dupont State Forest, North Carolina.

Living in the Upstate of South Carolina for several years and growing up in both tropical Florida and urban New Jersey, I realized that there is so much to do here that I was not brought up around. The North Carolina Appalachian Mountains have so much outdoor activities to offer at such a close proximity of about an hour to an hour and a half. Everything from hiking, kayaking, waterfalls, camping, and so much more. After a long cold miserable Winter, Easter Sunday of 2014 offered much sun and clear skies, a perfect day to get out and enjoy a nice hike in the mountains. My girlfriend and I chose DuPont State Forest as it is one of her favorite places to spend a day hiking. Although not too strenuous of a hike, the park has numerous trails with rewarding views of Triple Falls, High Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, Lake Julia, Hooker Falls and much more. The park has trails good enough for biking and horse riding as well. Aside from my usual worldly travel desires, it is great to know that a good road trip through the mountains is close, cost efficient and lots of fun. :)

This is a video of our trip to DuPont State Recreational Forest during the Sandhills Photography Club fall outing to the Asheville, NC area. My mom is the photographer and I just tagged along. This park is know for its beautiful waterfalls.

HOOKER FALLS WATERFALL - DuPont State Forest Brevard NC - THE ADVENTURES OF DREW AND AMANDA
While Hooker Falls is only a 12-foot waterfall, it's wide drop into a pool creates a beautiful setting and a great spot for splashing around on hot summer days. This is the fourth waterfall on the Little River in DuPont State Forest, and you can hike to the others: Triple Falls (one mile away), High Falls (1.5 miles) and Bridal Veil Falls .
Hooker Falls is easy to access via a 1/4-mile trail from the parking area. You will come to an observation deck above the falls first. Then continue on the trail to the pool in front of the waterfall. There are plenty of rocks to sit and enjoy the view. In the summer, it's a very popular swimming hole. While the Park Service doesn't encourage swimming, they do not do anything to discourage it either. We saw several rangers and as you can see, there were plenty of people swimming. It was, however, July 2 (2016) after all, any many people were on vacation, just like us.

This was a 5 day trip with a different camp spot each night. Some of the places we visited and camped include Standing Indian Campground, Bridal Veil Falls , Mooney Falls , Dry Falls, Hooker Falls, Callasaja Falls, Triple Falls and much much more.

Dupont National Forest | Hooker falls, Triple falls and High falls | Charlotte North Carolina
DuPont State Recreational Forest is an outdoors-lover's dream with many waterfalls and 86 miles of trails on protected 10,000 acres. Located between Brevard and Hendersonville, it's an easy 40-mile drive from Asheville. Most visitors flock to the three-mile roundtrip hike to three waterfalls (Hooker, Triple and High Falls), but there's so much more to explore! Take a variety of waterfall and lake hikes, or trek to the top of Cedar Rock or Stone Mountain for mountain views.
For more solitude and to avoid the weekend crowds, arrive early and visit on weekdays. Take a breakfast for an early morning picnic on the rocks at Triple Falls. DuPont is open everyday 5 AM until 10 PM. Admission is free. The Visitor Center and restrooms are located at the High Falls parking area. About a mile away on the same road is the Hooker Falls parking area with restrooms and changing rooms for swimming. There are four additional access areas with parking.

PILOT ROCK TRAIL PISGAH - Climbing up then Bombing Down
Wanna do one of the most brutal out and back rides in North Carolina? (Hell, just about anywhere!) Ride up the rocky, rooted, Pilot Rock Trail in Pisgah National Forest just outside of Brevard, NC.
It's about a solid hour of climbing up the mountain with plenty of hike a bike sections unless you're a trials champion with lungs of steel.
As if the 20+ super-technical switchbacks wasn't enough, there's a quarter-mile long, brutally chunky rock garden section that's nearly impossible to get up and routinely trips up the best of riders coming back down.
You better have some strong brakes along with forearms like Popeye to handle this downhill. My hands go numb on numerous occasions just from trying to pick lines and squeeze my levers. Don't let the camera angle fool you, this descent has some steep sections that a dropper post comes in handy for.
This is by far one of my favorite trails in Pisgah and just about anywhere to be honest.

Forest Service: Wildfire Caused by Man Burning
BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. -- The North Carolina Forest Service says the 740-acre wildfire that ripped through Black Mountain last week was caused by a man burning debris in his yard.
Donald Brayden Jr. has been cited for a fire that cost the state forest service alone nearly $400,000.
The fire, which started on March 31, is 100 percent contained now, fire officials say. At its peak, more than 20 agencies were working on containing it in the Ridgecrest Community of Buncombe County.
Forest service officials say in the past year people caused about 50 percent of wildfires in the state.

Wolf Creek Reservoir Kayak Camp
I did a quick overnighter on Wolf Creek in Jackson County, NC. This was the first time camping out of the Emotion Kayaks Renegade XT and the little boat did awesome. Nantahala National Forest butts up to the lake so I did some deer scouting. I've been searching for a place I can paddle in and camp, then hunt deer on public land. The sign was decent around this lake, so I'll definitely be going back this fall. Peace!
