Exhibition Cave Temples of Dunhuang
The Cave Temples of Dunhuang: Buddhist Art on China's Silk Road exhibition opened to public in May at Getty Center in Los Angeles, the United States. The exhibition will last until September, offering visitors the chance to learn about the art and history of the Mogao Grottoes, which thrived as a Buddhist center in China from the 4th to the 14th centuries.

Dunhuang, located in China's northwest Gansu province, was once a gateway to China from the west along the famed Silk Road trading route. To celebrate the city's unique artistic and cultural heritage, China Institute is curating an exhibition featuring Buddhist art found in Dunhuang's legendary Mogao caves.

In May this year, the exhibition Cave Temples of Dunhuang: Buddhist Art on China’s Silk Road, will be presented by Getty Museum in Los Angeles. This exhibition, which is unprecedented in scope, is the first in North America to fully explore the art, environment, and conservation of the Buddhist cave temples of Dunhuang.

Documentary about the artistic and cultural heritage of the Dunhuang Caves of Dunhuang (敦煌市), Jiuquan (酒泉市), northwestern Gansu province, northwest China (part 3 of 8). This documentary is part of an overarching series entitled Discovery 《发现》.

This episode, entitled 胡风唐韵, focuses on the Central Asian heritage of the peoples of northwest and western China (including the complex of rock-cut Buddhist cave temples located near the oasis town of Dunhuang), and how these cultural elements have influenced various genres of Chinese folk music and singing, as well as Chinese dance.
Among the folk genres shown is the lao qiang (老腔) tradition as performed by the Zhang Family Band (张家班) from Shuangquan (双泉村), a village near Huashan Mountain (华山) in Huayin (华阴市), Weinan (渭南市), on the Guanzhong plain (渭河平原) about two hours east of Xi'an, Shaanxi province (陕西省), northwest China.
Among the experts featured in this episode is the choreographer Xu Qi (许琪, b. 1942), who has created dance works based on evidence from depictions of traditional dance seen in the murals in the cave temples of Dunhuang.

World-renowned Chinese artist translates folk rituals into eclectic modern dance
[In partnership with Macao Government Tourism Office] Known affectionately as ‘The Peacock Princess’ and ‘Goddess of Dance’, self-taught dancer, choreographer, and director Yang Liping was catapulted to fame in 1986 with her interpretation of the Peacock Dance — a traditional Chinese folk performance by the Dai minority group in her native Yunnan province.
Since then, Yang has come to epitomise contemporary Chinese dance in a prolific career spanning four decades, where she skilfully blends multiple genres across acting, music, performance art, and theatre.
She brings her latest piece, 'Under Siege' to Macao this September as part of the Art Macao Festival, a five-month long international arts and cultural event running from June to October. Read more at
