Dunning's Spring Decorah, Iowa Spring timelapse
While planning a trip to visit a friend, I needed to pass through Decorah, Iowa and discovered there is flowing spring and 200 foot cascade waterfall called Dunning's Spring. The weather was rainy when I arrived and it continued to increase the whole 4 hours I was at the falls. The last 6-7 series of time lapse shots (25 minutes) were in a complete downpour. Luckily, I had recently purchased a double layered and stitched umbrella that held up quite well in the wind and rain. My last one fell apart in another downpour last fall.
This is a beautiful waterfall sans the leaves and I can't wait to revisit the park in full summer bloom.

Dunnings Spring Decorah, Iowa-summer time lapse
My return trip to Decorah, Iowa was timed as perfectly as the last visit in April, pouring rain. This time is was quite humid causing the cold water of the spring to breathe out a fog and mist. When I first caught site of the falls I was stunned by the mythical vision in front of me. So I hurried to quickly capture the scene before it disappeared. As good of luck as a photographer could have, the fog and mist continued to stay throughout my whole 4+ hours I spent at the falls. I had to take one break as the rain and thunder began to come down quite hard. There were a few other visitors to the falls and the looks on their faces were priceless as well.

Twin Springs Park-Decorah, Iowa time lapse
I had heard about other little water gems in the Decorah area and Twin Springs Park was quite a surprise as I wondered upstream from the bridge. I came upon a split in the creek that looked like it continued though a small hill. I walked around the hill expecting to the creek continue only to realize the split is the water source of Twin Springs. The cool spring waters were still creating low level fog on that humid day that hugged the waters as it rolled downstream, but with the sun coming out from behind the clouds soon, my time to capture the mystic of the creek was limited.

Malanaphy Springs-Winneshiek County Iowa
On my previous visit to the Decorah, Iowa area, I was at Twin Springs when a gentleman told me about Malanaphy Springs and it's location. The following weekend I headed down to capture it. After finding the parking area, I headed out in the wrong direction. After spending a little bit of time looking around for a trail, I realized what happened to my internal compass and headed in the right direction. The spider webs crossing the path were terrible making me open my umbrella as a shield the whole time to clear the path. It's bit of a walk but the trail is well packed and easy to travel. There are two waterfall stages to the spring, the upper section is where the water seeps out of the rock wall and travels down rock cascades and through the woods, this is the first half of the video. The second stage is the drop down the embankment splitting into dual waterfalls that flow into the Iowa River.

2019 4th July Trip to East - Northeast Iowa
This is a compilation of our family trip from July 4th through July 6th checking out some choice sites across eastern and northeastern Iowa. It includes footage from a couple phone cameras, hyperlapse video from a GoPro and screen recordings of 360 videos taken with a Samsung Gear 360. The editing was done with MS Powerpoint, TechSmith Snagit, MS Hyperlapse Pro and Cyberlink Action Director. Turn down the audio if the fill music is annoying, but know that there is audio with some of the videos. Disclaimer, I didn't spend the time or have all the tools needed to make this a professional production so bare that in mind.
On day 1, we had a picnic and did a lot of hiking checking out all of the trails at Maquoketa Caves State Park. We then took the guided tour at Crystal Lake Cave. Our final planned stop of the day was checking out the Julien Dubuque Monument and kayaking on Catfish Creek out to the Mississippi River at the Mines of Spain. We had dinner and drinks in Dubuque, then the kids enjoyed some pool time at the hotel.
Day 2 got off to a little rough start due to a key mishap and having to take a detour to get to our first stop. Though we did get to drive a portion of the Great River Road on the detour and view some neat scenery overlooking the Mississippi River valley. Our first planned stop was at Spook Cave and Campground where we had a picnic, took the guided boat tour, biked around checking out the waterfall and beach party that was going on at their lake/pond. Our plans next changed as it was determined that the Yellow River was a little high for some of our inexperienced boaters so we stopped at the Effigy Mounds National Park for a short hike and visit to their museum center. We then headed south to Pikes Peak State Park for site seeing and hiking the trails. After dinner in Prairie du Chien, we biked around the St. Feriole Island on the Wisconsin side of the river checking out the memorial garden.
Day 3 took us to Decorah to see the waterfall at Dunning's Spring Park and the Ice Cave. We had lunch downtown and took a quick stroll to the courthouse. After an ice cream stop, we headed to our final planned destination, Charles City. We wanted to check out the Whitewater Park but found that we didn't have the right type of kayaks to play on the course so we were spectators to the fun. We biked around the city trails and found the city was still celebrating Independence day with music and festival in Central Park.
There are so many cool things that we didn't have time to do but were pleased with the stops we chose to enjoy for this trip. At some point, we'll get back to the area to explore more.
