Deep in the Appalachian spine of West Virginia lies the small town of Cass, home to the world-famous Cass Scenic Railroad. The railroad is home to the worlds largest collection of geared Shay steam locomotives, three of which we witness in operation on the CSRR, along with geared Heisler steam locomotive #6 on the railroad's Whitaker Trips.

Cass Scenic Railroad State Park: Cass, West Virginia
Cass is the Greenbrier River in Pocahontas County, West Virginia, USA. As of the 2010 census, its population was 52 The town, founded in 1901, was named for Joseph Kerr Cass, vice president and cofounder of the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company. Cass began as a company town for those who worked for West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company, logging the nearby Cheat Mountain. The cut logs were brought by rail to the town, where they were processed for use by paper and hardwood-flooring companies throughout the United States. Cass's skilled laborers, who worked in the mill or the locomotive repair shop, lived with their families in 52 white-fenced houses, built in orderly rows on a hill south of the general store. In 1960 the mill closed. In 1963, the state bought the logging railroad and converted it into a tourist attraction, carrying passengers into the vast Monongahela National Forest. In the late 1970s, the state bought most of the town and its buildings for the new Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. In 1982 the mill burned down. The Cass Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
Cass Scenic Railroad: Allegheny Sidewinders
After eight years, I finally returned to the Cass Scenic Railroad for two days in October 2018. Operating over the former rails of the West Virginia Pulp & Paper Company, geared steam locomotives push passengers up the slopes of Cheat Mountain and Back Allegheny Mountain towards Bald Knob, the third highest point in the state and the highest standard gauge railroad point East of the Mississippi. The bulk of the locomotive fleet is comprised of Shay locomotives. Shays are driven by a set of vertical pistons that drive a gear shaft along the right-hand side of the engine, earning them the nickname Sidewinders. The Cass fleet also includes a Heisler locomotive, currently operating on the Durbin Rocket, and a Climax locomotive that is nearing the end of a long restoration.

The Wild Heart Of West Virginia: Riding The Cass Scenic Railroad With A Shay Doubleheader!
It's Day 1 of the NRHS Cumberland Rails 2018 Convention, and we're kicking it off with a bang at the renowned Cass Scenic Railroad, buried deep in the heart of the Appalachians of eastern West Virginia. Departing from Cass at 12:00 sharp, our journey over the Cheat Mountain would begin with Shays #2 and #4 powering the day's train. The duo would put on a spectacular show as we climbed approximately 6.7 miles to Old Spruce, where we would transfer to the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad's Cheat Mountain Salamander for the remainder of the trek to Elkins, arriving shortly before 5:00. The Wild Heart Of West Virginia excursion is truly something to behold, and this video provides a look into the breathtaking sights and sounds of vintage mountain railroading, and the history behind it all.
Thank you for watching, and I hope you enjoyed! If you haven't already, please be sure to check out the rest of the Cumberland Rails 2018 series, and our Facebook Page to view all of the photos!

Timber: The Life and Times of Cass, West Virginia (Oral Histories)
People make history. This account of people who at the turn of the century (1900) made history in the vast rich virgin forest of Pocahontas County, West Virginia. Many of them were the children of the earliest settlers to the region. Some had forefathers who fought the battle of Point Pleasant others had fought in the American civil war. These, their children, were carrying on the homesteads established. After the war, attention turned to developing the vast timber resources of that region. This is an oral history of those events.
The interviews began in 1975 from a list of the old timers secured from a bank employee. Each individual was interviewed and taped using a cassette recorder. For the most part these accounts lay dormant for more than 25 years. In 2000 the author Dr. Robert Alexander, blew the dust off the recordings, and with funding from the Drinko foundation compiled the recordings with never before released photographs by J.D Fowler.
Durbin Rocket: Durbin and Greenbrier Valley Scenic Railroad
We recently took a weekend family trip to visit Pocahontas County, West Virginia. One of the stops was in the small logging town of Durbin, where we boarded the Durbin Rocket. This steam powered locomotive currently travels in the Monongahela National Forest along the Greenbrier River between Durbin and Heavener Station. The out and back ride lasts about 2 hours, including a short lay over at Heavener Station. This is one of the trains of the Durbin and Greenbrier Valley Railroad. We arrived on a rainy morning, but fortunately the weather improved as the train pulled out of the station, and we had a great trip. Thanks for watching!
