The Dury Memorial is a World War I Canadian war memorial that commemorates the actions of the Canadian Corps in the Second Battle of Arras, particularly their breakthrough at the Drocourt-Quéant Line switch of the Hindenburg Line just south of the town of Dury. The Drocourt-Quéant Line was a main position in the German Army's defensive position in the area. The action took place on 2 and 3 September 1918 during a period known as the Hundred Days Offensive or Canada's Hundred Days. Particularly noteworthy for such a brief battle was that seven Canadians earned a Victoria Cross on September 2 during the battle.

The Vimy Memorial overlooks the Douai Plain from the highest point of Vimy Ridge. Located north of Arras in France, the Vimy Memorial is Canada’s largest overseas National Memorial. It commemorates more than 11,000 men of the Canadian Expeditionary Force killed during the First World War in France and who have no known grave. Many of them died in the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

Ce cimetière fut commencé par les troupes du corps canadien lors de la prise du village en septembre 1918 et fut considérablement agrandi après l’armistice pour y regrouper les tombes des champs de bataille environnement. Il contient les tombes de soldats et aviateurs dont 1884 britanniques et 173 canadiens.

Dury Mill British Cemetery est un cimetière militaire britannique à Dury, situé au lieu-dit Mont de Dury. Il a une superficie de 1.568 m2 et contient 335 corps de 19 14-1918. Il a été aménagé par Sir Edwin Lutyens. En août 1918, Dury est derrière le système défensif allemand connu sous le nom de ligne Drocourt-Quéant. Le 2 septembre, le 17e corps britannique et le corps canadien brise cette ligne reprenant le village. Ce cimetière a été ouvert par les unités canadiennes le 5 septembre 1918, et fermé 6 jours plus tard.il contient les tombes de soldats et aviateurs dont 12 britanniques et 324 canadiens.

Mrs. Beatrice Jackson was born in Ontario in 1924 and moved to England as a child. She joined the Royal Canadian Air Force – Women’s Division during the Second World War. A highlight of her wartime experiences was visiting the East Grinstead Hospital on her days off and helping the wounded airmen who were recovering from severe burns they had suffered during their service. In this clip, Mrs. Jackson explains the personal inspiration she gained from being with these brave burn patients and how their strength helped her carry on.

Errol Patrick was born in Montréal in 1930 and joined the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery regiment during the Korean War. He saw action in Korea and remained in the military after the war ended, retiring in 1985 as Chief Warrant Officer of Artillery at CFB Gagetown in New Brunswick after 35 years of service. In this clip, Mr. Patrick describes the food and ammunition supply his regiment encountered upon their arrival in Pusan.

The Battle of the Somme was the regiment's first major engagement, and during an assault that lasted approximately 30 minutes the regiment was all but wiped out. Purchased in 1921 by the people of Newfoundland, the memorial site is the largest battalion memorial on the Western Front, and the largest area of the Somme battlefield that has been preserved. Along with preserved trench lines, there are a number of memorials and cemeteries contained within the site.

A video capturing some of the sights from a recent trip to Great War and Second World War battlefields in France and Belgium. These photos are from four days spent visiting, primarily, the Canadian sites of note, part of a larger week-long trip that saw us also visit the other D-Day beaches and other landing sites including Pegasus Bridge.
The music selections are those that were played by the K.H. De Vijverzonen Dikkebus vzw ( band at one of the amazing Last Post services we attended at the Menin Gate in Ypres.

VIMY RIDGE CANADIAN WORLD WAR 1 MEMORIAL. Filmed early 1937 from 8mm stock
This footage was taken overseas in 1937 on standard 8mm so quality suffers greatly as a result but there are incredible shots taken throughout France and parts of England, Of special note is the Vimy Ridge Memorial for the Canadian soldiers of World War 1. This was filmed in early '37 so the memorial was less than one year old. Nice historical piece.
