Invercargill - In & Around Invercargill City
Negative, Slanderous or Vulgar comments will be deleted.
In April 2008 I went back to Invercargill, Southland, New Zealand for a visit, from North Battleford, Saskatchewan. While back there I filmed a bit of the place, namely for family back in Canada to see but I thought I would drop a cropped form of the video here on Youtube.
Firstly I show Invercargills city centre then go for a jaunt through the Aviary at Queens Park then onto the Estuary and out to Oreti Beach where some of the filming of The Worlds Fastest Indian with Anthony Hopkins took place then back into Invercargill to the display at E.Hayes & Sons hardware on Dee St which commemorates the Worlds Fastest Indian.
All for interests sake really.

1920 INDIAN SCOUT
1920 INDIAN SCOUT.
The Indian Scout is a motorcycle built by the Indian Motocycle Company from 1920 to 1949. It rivalled the Chief as Indian's most important model. The 101 Scout, made from 1928 to 1931, has been called the best motorcycle Indian ever made. A second line of Scouts, with lighter frames and reduced engine displacement, was introduced in 1932 alongside the Standard Scout, which replaced the 101 Scout and shared its frame with the Chief and the Four. The small-displacement Scout and the Sport Scout, introduced in 1934, were continued until the end of civilian production in 1942. Military versions of both models were used by US and other Allied forces during World War II.
Apart from fifty examples of the 648, a special racing version of the Sport Scout, the Scout was not continued after World War II. In 1949 an all-new motorcycle, with an overhead valve straight-twin engine, was called the Scout; it was enlarged and renamed the Warrior in 1950.
Designed by Charles B. Franklin, the Scout was introduced in October 1919 as a 1920 model. The Scout had a sidevalve V-twin engine with its transmission bolted to the engine casing, allowing a geared primary drive - the only American v-twin to use this maintenance-free system. The Scout engine initially displaced 606 cc (37 ci), but the engine size was increased to 745 cc (45 ci) in 1927 in response to the popularity of the Excelsior Super X. In early 1928, a front brake was added to the Scout.
Burt Munro's Indian Scout was a very early model, being only the 627th Scout to leave the American factory. The bike had an original top speed of 55 mph (89 km/h). But this did not satisfy Munro, so in 1926 he decided to start modifying his beloved Indian.
The biggest two challenges for Munro to overcome while modifying his bike were his lack of money and that he worked full-time as a motorcycle salesman. He would often work overnight on his bikes (he had a 1936 Velocette MSS as well), then he would go to work in the morning, having had no sleep the night before.
Because Munro was a man of modest means, he would often make parts and tools himself instead of having them professionally built. For example, he would cast parts in old tins, make his own barrels, pistons, flywheels, etc. His micrometer was an old spoke.
In its final stages, the Indian's displacement was 950 cc (as built it was 600 cc) and was driven by a triple chain drive system.
The Munro Special, as Munro called his bike, is now owned by a motorcycle enthusiast in New Zealand's South Island, and is on display at E Hayes & Sons, Invercargill. There is also a second motorcycle purported to be the original Munro Special in Te Papa Museum in Wellington.
Between 1962 and 1967, New Zealander Burt Munro used a modified 1920 Indian Scout to set flying mile land speed records at the Bonneville Salt Flats. His records were:
• 20 August 1962: 54 ci (880 cc) class record of 178.971 mph (288.026 km/h).
• 22 August 1966: 61 ci (1,000 cc) class record of 168.066 mph (270.476 km/h).
• 26 August 1967: 61 ci (1,000 cc) class record of 183.586 mph (295.453 km/h).
Munro's efforts were dramatised in the 2005 film The World's Fastest Indian.

Invercargill's inventors - Roadside Stories
New Zealanders are famous for their 'no. 8 wire' mentality -- ingenuity and creativity using basic materials. Hayes hardware store in Invercargill is run by the descendants of Ernest Hayes, who invented an array of farming gadgets in the late 19th century. The store also features the remarkable motorcycles designed and built by local speedster Burt Munro.

Burt Munro
Herbert James Burt Munro was a New Zealand motorcycle racer, famous for setting an under-1,000 cc world record, at Bonneville, 26 August 1967. This record still stands; Munro was 68 and was riding a 47-year-old machine when he set his last record.
Working from his home in Invercargill, he worked for 20 years to highly modify the 1920 Indian motorcycle that he had bought that same year. Munro set his first New Zealand speed record in 1938 and later set seven more. He travelled to compete at the Bonneville Salt Flats, attempting to set world speed records. During his ten visits to the salt flats, he set three speed records, one of which still stands.

Norman Hayes Engine
Norman Hayes Engine built by the late Norman Hayes in 1980. Fuel tank is a pressure cooker, float bowl is a preserving jar, carburetor is a 1/2 inch brass garden tap, ignition from trip magneto, muffler is a bed pan, brass toilet cistern is water tank, stirrup pump provides water cooling. The engine is unique to Norman. He would have had great difficulty with the rough finnish, because he was a self taught engineer and perfectionist.
The engine can be found at E Hayes and Sons hardware store in Invercargill.
New Zealand Part 5
We had our first real bad weather day, to where we had to ware our rain coats. But that didn't stop us from getting out and seeing a few things. Just down the road from where we camped, are the Pancake rocks and blowholes. I were not there at the right time to see the blowholes going off. After the Pancake rocks, we headed down to the Franz Josef Glacier. We ended up hiking the long trail that leads us right to the glacier. It was a long hike in the rain, but oh so worth it.
The next day we drove down to Queenstown, We get a great view of the world famous Remarkables mountain range. When we finally get into Queenstown we go shopping to replaced Jen's hiking boots. We wanted to ride the gondola, but there's just no place to park. So we just drove on to Glenorchy for a free campsite, surrounded by mountains just outside of Paradise.
We awoke to the sight of fresh snow on the mountain tops. We were going to head to Milford Sound, but we had gotten reports that the road to Milford Sound was closed due to snow. So instead, we just headed down to Invercargill. Once there we went to the E. Hayes and Sons hardware store to see the motorcycles on display, including Burt Munro's world record holding bikes. Burt Munro's story was put on film with the movie Worlds Fastest Indian. After the hardware store, we drove to the Classic Motorcycle Mecca. Seeing all those classic motorcycles; what a way to finish the day.
