We took a drive to Wallowa Lake, which is south of Joseph, Oregon and then went in the Eagle Cap Wilderness area of the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest which gave us a fitness reality check.

Joseph is a city in Wallowa County, Oregon, United States. Originally named Silver Lake and Lake City, the city formally named itself 138 years ago in 1880 for Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce people. The population was 1,081 at the 2010 census. The Wallowa Mountains are a mountain range located in the Columbia Plateau of northeastern Oregon in the United States. The range runs approximately 40 miles northwest to southeast in southwestern Wallowa County and eastern Union County between the Blue Mountains to the west and the Snake River to the east.

In the middle of August my family and I took a backing trip into the Eagle Cap Wilderness in Eastern Oregon, USA. This is also known as the Wallowa Mountains and Wallowa County. Our adventure started up Lostine Canyon. We took off from the main trail head to Mirror Lake, 7 miles. The next day we went to Moccasin Lake (took a swim there) and up to Glacier Lake, 5 miles. That morning we hiked down the Wallowa River to 6 Mile Meadow, 7 miles. And finally, we hiked out to the head of Wallowa Lake, 6 miles. Quite the adventure that was!
I am thrilled and nervous to publish my first Youtube video. I've always loved film making, especially documentaries and travel vlog videos. I would of made my channel a while ago but never lived in the area I wanted to film in. But now, moving back to Eastern Oregon has given me the opportunity to express my creativity and love for the outdoors.

The Wallowa Mountains are a mountain range located in the Columbia Plateau of northeastern Oregon in the United States. The range runs approximately 40 miles (64 km) northwest to southeast in southwestern Wallowa County and eastern Union County between the Blue Mountains to the west and the Snake River to the east. Joseph, Oregon, located at the foot of the Wallowa Mountains, is the jewel of Northeast Oregon. Incorporated in 1887, it has long served as a gateway to incredible recreational opportunities, including Wallowa Lake, the Eagle Cap Wilderness, and the Hells Canyon Recreation Area. Its thriving downtown, with its very own distillery, brewery, and a collection of unique shops surrounded by over a dozen life size bronze sculptures forged by local artists, is a destination on its own.

Started this trip by flying into Boise ID 7.02.2017, and started our trip 7.03.2017 after spending the night in at the Eldorado Inn in Baker City OR. (BI-Mart in Baker city has many supplies available to the Backpacker who forgets to grab items like fuel at the Boise REI).
We had a backup trip planned for the Elkhorn Crest Trail in case the East Eagle - Imnaha Loop wasn't feasible. However, despite the warnings we opted to attempt the loop in Eagle Cap.
On our drive from Baker City we took the shortest route via GPS, this took us on a very steep and sketchy route I would not recommend. I would recommend taking the directions listed in the various guidebooks for the area (ex: Backpacking Oregon Douglas Lorain) as it it much less steep and bumpy.
Taking off from East Eagle Trailhead, we ran into the beginning of East Eagle Trail 1910 about a mile up the road. In the first ~9.5 miles to our camp at the Horton Pass/Frasier Pass junction the trail climbs from ~4500ft to ~6500ft. This means its a slow but steady 2000ft accent the entire way.
The trail was almost entirely snow free with the exceptions of a few creeks running off the mountains still covered in packed snow. Reports from the ranger station in Joseph claimed significant snow 4-6 miles into most trails. However, east eagle was almost completely snow free until about 11 miles in.
The video shows our attempt to ford east eagle creek to reach Hidden Lake but we became uncomfortable & almost instantly numb by the thigh high water.
On day 2 we traveled up Horton Pass and spent the night near Mirror lake. The 2,000ft climb up Horton Pass was make difficult about the 12 mile mark with slopey snow covered trails not visible without GPS. We were fine with spikes and trekking poles until the last pitch of the pass. At this last portion we broke out the ice axes due to the possibility of a dangerous fall.
Once at the top of Horton Pass, we ignorantly glissaded and butt-saded down the other side toward the lakes basin about 1000ft despite the entire basin being covered in snow. This turned out to be our biggest mistake.
When arriving in the Lakes Basin Area, we realized that the hiking was extremely difficult due to several feet of very pitted snow. We made the call to turnaround at Mocassin Lake. The reason being that we were unsure of conditions ahead at Glacier Pass and we didn't want to be stuck in a worse situation if we had to turn around further into the hike. So we searched and found what seemed like the only melted out campsite at Mirror Lake.
The 3rd day was a nervewracking journey back up to Horton Pas (scariest part for me) with axes and spikes. We ended up making the entire journey back to the trailhead the same day with hopes of having time to hike a bit of the Elkhorn Crest Trail.
All in all, this was only 27 miles but is was a brutal 27. The heavy snowpack this year indeed lived up to the hype. I would not recommend the unprepared hiker to make the journey all the way up to Horton Pass (I would stop at first significant snow on the pass). And for the prepared hikers who can make it up the pass, I would not recommend the Lakes Basin unless you are experienced and confident on heavy snow. The snow was packed like concrete with only the occasional posthole.

Four of us, Guy/N7UN, Chris W6HFP, Janis/Photographer and Steve/wGOAT met in Portland for a week long back pack adventure in NE Oregon. After a 6-hour drive we arrived at Tim/KE7RVL and Lorna/KE7RVI's home in Enterprise, OR. This video is the about our adventure into the Eagle Cap Wilderness Area. Sad to say Rooster and Peanut did not make this journey.

End of April 2018 we visited this hidden paradise of Oregon, Wallowa Mountains and stayed in the nearby town -Joseph. O my Lord, the beauty that it beholds cannot be described in words, video or pictures, so will just write what we did and where we stayed.
We stayed in Joseph OR, the sweetest little town that I have been to (don't want to mention the name of the Motel).
We ate and drank at.
1. Embers brew pub (Nice pizza and good beer selection)
2. Cheyenne Cafe (gigantic & delicious sandwiches)
3. Red Horse Coffee traders. (What a charming cafe by the creek)
4. Outlaw Restaurant Saloon( Best Bloody Mary ever)
5. Arrowhead Chocolates (Umm chocolates).
We did hang out at the Wallowa Lake a lot, sat there in peace without anyone around. Was pleasantly surprised.
We did a short (by Wallowa mountains standards) 12 miles hike in Eagle cap wilderness area called the Hurricane creek hike.

Dennis Quad - at Eagle Cap Chalets
We were at the Eagle Cap Chalets, in Joseph Oregon this past weekend. ( .. We go every year for the Wilson family reunion.
This year, I decided to pull out Dennis the quad and buzz around the chalets some. REALLY wanted to go down by the lake and fly some there, as well as up to the top of the tram - but ran out of time. Next year for sure!
