The Eagle Gate monument is a historical monument—more in the form of an arch than a gate—seventy-six feet across, situated at the intersection of State Street at South Temple, adjacent to Temple Square, in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The monument was erected in 1859 and commemorates the entrance to Brigham Young's property at the mouth of City Creek Canyon. It was originally topped by a wooden eagle, refurbished several times and eventually replaced by the current 4,000-pound, bronze eagle, with a wingspan of 20 feet (6.1 m). Carved by Ralph Ramsay,[4] the original wooden eagle is on display at the Daughters of Utah Pioneers Museum located at 300 North Main Street.
The first Eagle Gate was remodeled and enlarged with new stone piers and wider inverted arches in the early 1890s (with Ralph Ramsay's eagle rebuilt and fortified); designed by Don Carlos Young, an architect son of Brigham Young. Due to the widening of State Street in the early 1960s, the prior monument including Ramsay's eagle was removed and replaced with a much wider and larger third generation Eagle Gate, designed by Salt Lake City architect George Cannon Young. Young was the son of Don Carlos Young and the grandson of Brigham Young. The monument is one of Salt Lake City's most well known pioneer landmarks, and its current design is one of Salt Lake City's best standing examples of Mid-Century Modern design.

This marvelous historical manor is a Utah gem that is steeped in a century of history. Originally established in 1938 by the Walker family as a summer home, this property boasts a 13,000 square foot house, a guesthouse with a second floor apartment, a newly built caretaker’s cottage, a charming barn, and acres of exquisite gardens, pools, ponds, and paths. With only 4 owners since the home was built, each one has carefully preserved this historic property while updating essential elements to capitalize on modern innovations.
Located at the end of one of the most elite streets in Utah, this home is nestled in an extremely quiet, pastoral setting. The ornate, wrought iron fence that surrounds the property, which was purchased at a museum auction, is the original fence that surrounded Boston Common at the same time Paul Revere made his infamous midnight ride. A lovely pond and winding path are part of the sweeping landscape that leads to the grand entrance, which features stately pillars, an ornate ceiling, and an intricate fountain.
Beyond the magnificent entry, the foyer still has the original marble floors and lead glass windows. It also features a stunning spiral staircase that was meticulously reassembled by hand after being purchased from the New Hampshire’s Governor’s mansion that draws the eye up to a gorgeous chandelier.
The spacious living room has an abundance of beautiful features, including the original fireplace and hardwood floors, ornate moldings, and a period chandelier. The large windows offer sweeping views of an exquisite landscape and the pool, which won an international gold medal for design.
The billiards room boasts original stained glass, coffered, gold leaf ceilings, and marble floors. French doors and windows in a lovely alcove bathe the room in soft light. A wet bar and a regal fireplace make this space ideal for gathering together with friends and family for any event.
One of the most charming rooms in the home is the winter garden room, which has heated tile floors under a beautiful atrium. Three sets of French doors leading to the gardens provide ample light and outstanding views.
To the left of the foyer, a water closet with a gold sink and stained glass sits just outside the private office space. This majestic office is surrounded with wonderful architectural features, including wood paneling from the New Hampshire Governor’s mansion, arch doors, stunning tile, and a wood fireplace.
To the right of the living room is a spacious formal dining room with marble floors, a fireplace, and antique windows from England. The adjacent kitchen boasts traditional details such as tall ceilings and original stained glass, but commercial-grade appliances, a massive granite island, and a butler’s pantry capitalize on modern conveniences. It is easy to entertain groups of any size with easy access from the kitchen to the patio, the formal dining room, or the informal dining space.
To the right of the kitchen, the informal dining space and the family room, create a modern-day great room. Domed ceilings, antique stained glass and a grand fireplace add to the ambiance of this room and an ice cream parlor from England offers some whimsy.
Upstairs, the master bedroom boasts floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the spectacular gardens and flood the room with light.
The ballet room houses several treasures, including woodwork from the historic Leyson-Pearsall jewelry store that was established on Salt Lake City’s Main Street in 1905. The original jewelry case, a wrought iron gate, and beautiful columns add wonderful charm to this delightful room.
Additional features include a second story laundry room, a luxurious sauna, and a generous mudroom with lockers and a dog bath. Each of the home’s bedrooms is a miniature suite, with two closets and a full bathroom assigned to each room, which allows family members and guests to enjoy their own private sanctuary.
The stunning grounds of this property are beyond comparison. A charming cutting garden, lush fruit trees, and sprawling grassy areas create an inherently beautiful atmosphere. Paths wind through the property, which is dotted with quiet sitting areas that provide views of the stunning Wasatch mountain range. Original statues, an award-winning pool, and a sports court offer something for everyone. The ponds, pools, and creek keep the grounds cooler in the summer than other parts of the valley, which makes it even easier to enjoy the outdoors.
The spellbinding peg-wood barn was carefully constructed with attention to every detail. On the main floor, the three stall doors are salvaged elevator doors from the renown Walker building in downtown Salt Lake City. Wooden beams flank the tall ceiling and beautiful chandeliers provide a charming aesthetic.

Salt Lake City: A Downtown Story
Salt Lake City: A Downtown Story
Brigham Young's Office, The Lion House, The Beehive House and Administration Building
A cluster of historic sites all together here at Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah
--- Brigham Young’s Office ---
Erected about 1852, used as the executive offices of the Territory of Utah until 1855, headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from the time it was finished until 1917, when the new Church Office Building was completed.
For a short time it was also the Church Tithing Office. Many distinguished persons have been entertained here.
--- The Lion House ---
Built by President Brigham Young and used by him as a residence from about 1855 until his death in 1877. On the lower floor were the dining room and kitchens. On the next floor were the living rooms and large parlor; and on the top floor were the bedrooms.
It was in this house that President Young died. Later the building was used for school purposes and as a social center for women and girls. The lion is a replica of one that occupied a similar position on a prominent home in Vermont, the State where President Young was born and spent his youth.
In 1869, Brigham Young founded the Young Women organization in the Lion House.
--- The Bee-Hive House ---
Erected about 1852 by President Brigham Young as the Official Residence of the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and occupied by him from the time it was completed until his death in 1877.
From 1852 to 1855 it also served as the Executive Mansion of Governor Brigham Young of the Territory of Utah.
It was also the home of presidents Lorenzo Snow (1898 – 1901) and Joseph F. Smith (1901 – 1918), both of whom died here.
--- Eagle Gate ---
“The Eagle Gate was erected in 1859, Hiram B. Clawson, designer; Ralph Ramsay and William Bell, carvers. It formed a part of a cobble stone wall, 8 feet high and 500 rods long, which surrounded the grounds of President Brigham Young and was built by him as a protection against Indians, and to furnish labor to the unemployed. Torn down in 1890 to widen the street and to permit the passage of electric cars. Rebuilt in 1891.”
--- Church Adminitration Building ---
The 24 iconic pilasters which surround the exterior are made of solid granite. This granite, as well as that which covers the rest of the steel and concrete structure, was taken from the same quarry as the stone used to build the Salt Lake Temple.

Bear Canyon Bridge Trail Guide, Sandy, Utah
3 bridges, a boulder tunnel, a waterfall, mountain and urban views, this hiking trail has something for everyone!
This trail has a few different entry points from the Bonneville Shoreline Trail (BST). Actually, the BST is the only trail you really need to follow if you want to go on the suspension bridge shown in the title screen. However, if you want to see the waterfall and a smaller bridge, then an extra climb is needed.
The trailhead as shown on alltrails starts in Hidden Valley Park in Sandy (South of Salt Lake City), but when you get there, if you don't know the place, it can be a little tricky to find, mostly as you are not parking at a trailhead, but at the park itself. If you go to the far end of the parking lot toward the mountain (GPS marker is listed in the video), you will see a trail going up the hill, follow this paved path about .1 mile to the actual trailhead. This is the way started the trail. However, if you want to shorten it, go further down the paved path maybe .3-.4 mile til you can see a wide gravel path going up a hill, this will shorten your trail by about .5 mile probably. Walk up this hill, take a right at a set of steps and go down over a bridge, follow the BST Trail to a fenced area. If you go into this fenced area this is actually the Bear Canyon Loop which requires a climb up a few hundred feet incline then down over a bridge, where a small waterfall can be seen. However, if you are there with a dog, or just want to see the suspension bridge, then walk past the wooden gate to the Bear Canyon Loop, go straight and get to the bridge in a jiffy! There are map screen shots in the video trail guide that will help you with this hike.
There are other ways to get to this bridge- other trail entries from nearby neighborhoods, or maybe even if you are walking from the opposite direction on the BST.
Keep in mind there is a good chance to see mountain bikers as well as hikers on this trail.
This trail is also popular with families with small children as well as tourists and trail runners.
