Urban Earth - Bristol, UK
As part of a University of Bristol PGCE Geography workshop I created this photo-video by walking from the rural outskirts of Bristol to the centre, taking a photo roughly every 15-20 steps.
It was carried out on Sunday 8th May 2011, between 5.30am - 10am which is why it's incredibly quiet.
Approximate route: Lawrence Weston - Henbury - Southmead - Henleaze - Clifton Downs - Whiteladies Road - Clifton Triangle - Park Street - City Centre - Bristol Temple Meads Railway Station.
The idea came from the Urban Earth project: and the Geographical Association.

National Space Centre Leicester, England
The National Space Centre is one of the United Kingdom's leading visitor attractions that is devoted to space science and astronomy. It is located in the city of Leicester, England, The centre arose from a partnership between the University of Leicester's Space Research Centre and local government agencies. The total construction cost was £52m, £26m of which came from a Millennium Commission grant, and the rest from private sector sponsors. It is run as an educational charity, and offers science workshops for school children of all ages. The Centre has on display the only known Soyuz spacecraft in Western Europe (in the United States, another Soyuz spacecraft is at the Smithsonian Institution as part of their Apollo-Soyuz Test Project display).
The centre has six main galleries of exhibits and visitor activities covering space flight, astronomy and cosmology. The attraction also includes a Digistar 3 dome cinema and planetarium, a gift shop and a restaurant. The restaurant is situated beneath the two nozzles of the Blue Streak and PGM-17 Thor rockets.

We spent Friday 31st July in At-Bristol. It was Aaron's second time and Daddy's first. It's a favourite place of Aaron and I's. Very interactive and educational. You can certainly spend a day there without getting bored. A blog post will be coming shortly. Our day was courtesy of #VisitBristol and Bristol is I must say, my favourite city in the UK.

Walkthrough of the Natural History Museum in London 4k
The museum is home to life and earth science specimens comprising some 80 million items within five main collections: botany, entomology, mineralogy, paleontology and zoology. The museum is a centre of research specialising in taxonomy, identification and conservation. Given the age of the institution, many of the collections have great historical as well as scientific value, such as specimens collected by Charles Darwin. The museum is particularly famous for its exhibition of dinosaur skeletons and ornate architecture—sometimes dubbed a cathedral of nature—both exemplified by the large Diplodocus cast that dominated the vaulted central hall before it was replaced in 2017 with the skeleton of a blue whale hanging from the ceiling. The Natural History Museum Library contains extensive books, journals, manuscripts, and artwork collections linked to the work and research of the scientific departments; access to the library is by appointment only. The museum is recognised as the pre-eminent centre of natural history and research of related fields in the world.

10. La Bella Principessa
One of the most enthralling stories of an unidentified piece of art is that of ‘La Bella Principessa’. In 1998 Kate Ganz, an art dealer from New York, purchased this study, that depicted the head and shoulders of a young woman, for just under $22,000 from Christie’s in New York. She sold it, in 2007, to Peter Silverman, a Canadian collector, for a similar price- saying at the time that it was based on a number of paintings by Leonardo Da Vinci.
9. The Image of Jane Austen
She’s one of the most famous British authors ever, having written Sense and Sensibility, and Pride and Prejudice- but Jane Austen is also the subject of one of the art world’s longest running mysteries. It all relates to a painting, known as the ‘Rice’ portrait, and whether it is of a young Austen, or someone else altogether.

The girl with a pearl earring, painted in 1665 by Johannes Vermeer, is one of the most famous images in the art world. It’s from the Dutch Golden Age, and is often voted as the most beautiful painting in the Netherlands- but one question remains, who was the subject?

Many people consider Van Gogh one of the greatest painters of all time. He’s certainly one of the most famous, even if it’s just because everyone knows about how he cut off his own ear in a moment of insanity. The true mystery of the artist behind the Starry Night, Sunflowers, and Self-portrait with bandaged ear, though, is how did he die?
5. The Battle of Anghiari
The Battle of Anghiari is a painting by one of the world’s most famous artists- Leonardo Da Vinci. He was commissioned to paint it in 1503 for the Great Council Hall in Florence, but the problem is- every image you may have ever seen of the painting is done by other artists, because the original has been lost.
4. The Biggest Heist in History
I’m sure you, like me, love a good heist story, but the truth behind the biggest heist ever carried out is still to be uncovered. For those of you who guessed, it took place in 1990 at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. Security guards opened the doors to two policemen who were responding to a disturbance but, to their surprise, the cops handcuffed them!
3. The Identity of Banksy
Art goes hand in hand with the ideas of pushing the limits and exploring new ideas, and Banksy definitely lives up to this to this. He first came onto the scene in 1990, as a freehand graffiti artist in Bristol, in the UK, but since then he’s moved on to stencilled works, and is renowned for his humour, satire, and anti-establishment ethos.
2. The Original Mona Lisa
Leonardo’s Mona Lisa is, without doubt, the most recognisable portrait that’s ever been made. It’s housed in the Louvre museum in Paris and is much smaller in person than you’d expect. There’s questions about who the person depicted in the painting is, but more curious is whether the one on display is even a likeness of a real person in the first place.

The Magna Carta of scientific maps
One of the most important maps of the UK ever made – described as the ‘Magna Carta of geology’ – is to go on permanent public display in Cambridge after being restored to its former glory.

William Smith’s 1815 Geological Map of England and Wales, which measures 8.5ft x 6ft, demonstrated for the first time the geology of the UK and was the culmination of years of work by Smith, who was shunned by the scientific community for many years and ended up in debtors’ prison. Today, exactly 200 years since its first publication, a copy of Smith’s map – rediscovered after more than a century in a museum box – will go on public display at the Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences. Aside from a copy held at The Geological Society in London, the Cambridge map is believed to be the only such map on public display anywhere in the world.
