Short video of bicycling on Portland, Oregon's floating bridge, crossing over the Willamette River using the N Steel Bridge, and on to the Waterfront Bike Trail. The Eastbank Esplanade (officially Vera Katz Eastbank Esplanade) is a pedestrian and bicycle path along the east shore of the Willamette River in the Kerns, Buckman, and Hosford-Abernethy neighborhoods of Portland, Oregon. It was conceived as an urban renewal project to rebuild the Interstate 5 bicycle bypass washed out by the Willamette Valley Flood of 1996. It was renamed for former Portland mayor Vera Katz in November 2004.
The project was designed by landscape architects Mayer/Reed. The total cost of the project was $30 million, of which $10 million was spent to build a lower deck on the Steel Bridge. Construction began in October of 1998 and the walkway was dedicated on May 25, 2001.
It extends 1.5 miles (2.4 km) from the Steel Bridge to the Hawthorne Bridge. The esplanade contains a 1,200 ft (366 m) long floating walkway, the longest in the United States. Connected to this is a 120 ft (37 m) long public dock. There are also 13 markers that correspond to the eastside street grid. (Wikipedia)

This is the last in this series of my walk on the waterfront along the
Willamette River. This takes us from the Steel Bridge heading south
along the Eastbank Esplanade back towards the Hawthorne Bridge before
the batteries died on the camera.

I shot this Union Pacific freight train from the Burnside Bridge overlooking the Willamette River and the Eastbank Esplanade and while I was beginning to feel some rain drops. This trains entered the Brooklyn Subdivision from the Graham Line via the East Portland Junction and started to head south down Horn Alley Next to the I-5 in Portland, Oregon of Multnomah County. The Steel Bridge is a through truss, double-deck vertical-lift bridge across the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon, United States, opened in 1912. Its lower deck carries railroad and bicycle/pedestrian traffic, while the upper deck carries road traffic (on the Pacific Highway West No. 1W, former Oregon Route 99W) and light rail (MAX), making the bridge one of the most multimodal in the world. Komadori takes a frame every 6 seconds. I slowed this down a little so you can see the pedestrians, bikers, trains, and trimet MAX traffic across the Willamette River today as I painted the cherry blossoms and steel bridge.

I hug out at the food court inside the Millennium Park Plaza when this beauty came by. The Battleship Oregon Memorial was built in 1956 to honor an 1893 ship. It was nicknamed 'the Bulldog of the United States Navy' and fought in many famous battles before it was retired from service. On July 4, 1976, a time capsule was sealed in the base of the memorial. The time capsule is to be opened July 5, 2076.
The Founders Stone honors Portland's founders, William Pettygrove and Asa Lovejoy, who tossed a coin to decide whether their new town would be named Boston or Portland.
Salmon Street Springs was dedicated in 1988, although it wasn't named until a contest was held in 1989. Designed by Robert Perron Landscape Architects and Planners, the fountain is controlled by an underground computer that changes the pattern of the fountain's 185 water jets. The three cycles of the fountain are called misters, bollards, and wedding cake. At full capacity, the fountain recycles 4,924 gallons of water per minute through as many as 137 jets at once.
On August 3, 1990, the Japanese American Historical Plaza was dedicated to the memory of those who were deported to inland internment camps during World War II. In the memorial garden, artwork tells the story of the Japanese people in the Northwest - of immigration, elderly immigrants, native-born Japanese Americans, soldiers who fought in US military services during the war, and the business people who worked hard and had hope for the children of the future. A sculpture by Jim Gion, Songs of Innocence, Songs of Experience, serves as a gateway to the plaza.
A non-profit organization, the Oregon Nikkei Endowment, fueled the commemoration with help from PP&R, Metropolitan Arts Commission, Portland Development Commission, and the Portland-Sapporo Sister City Association. Designed by award-winning landscape architect Robert Murase, the plaza is 70 feet wide at its narrowest, 200 feet at its widest. It extends between NW Davis & Naito Parkway (formerly Front Ave) and the Willamette River esplanade for about 300 feet northward from the Burnside Bridge. One hundred ornamental cherry trees link the plaza northward to the Friendship Circle, a collaboration by sculptor Lee Kelly and composer Michael Stirling. From a wide concrete circle rise a pair of 20-foot stainless towers from which emanates music based upon traditional and contemporary Japanese instruments. The sculpture commemorates 30 years of the Sister City relationship between Sapporo, Japan and Portland.
In 1993, the Police Memorial, located at SW Jefferson near the Hawthorne Bridge, was dedicated to Portland police officers who had given their lives in the performance of their official duties.
***Historical Information***
The idea for this park came at the turn of the century when the 1903 Olmsted Report pointed out the need not only for parks within the city, but for a greenway scheme for the riverbanks in order to ensure their preservation for future generations. The 1912 Bennett Plan again showed a need for more parks and river greenways, but instead of reorienting itself to the river, the city's focus was pulled further inland. In the late 1920s, the seawall was built along the Willamette's west bank for the protection of downtown from the annual floods. The seawall not only cut off the water from the people, but the people from the water as well. The construction of Harbor Drive along the west bank in the 1940s continued the trend of isolating the public from the river.
With the opening of the Eastbank Freeway (Marquam Bridge, I-5), Harbor Drive became less important to the traffic flow of the city. Governor Tom McCall created the Harbor Drive Task Force in 1968 in order to study proposals for creating a public open space in its place. In 1974, Harbor Drive was torn up and construction of a waterfront park began. It was completed and dedicated in 1978, gaining instant popularity. WWL: Former Mayor Vera Katz immortalized on Willamette
The Eastbank Esplanade, located on the Willamette River, encompasses all of it. The Esplanade is named after former Portland mayor Vera Katz. It was a part of her vision and it's a part of where we live.
'Strike Against Climate Change 2019' Portland, OR
Last Friday morning thousands of students left school early to take to the streets of Portland as part of the international Strike Against Climate Change.
After a rally where the young activists spoke passionately about the urgent action needed to save our planet from a climate disaster they marched across the Hawthorne Bridge to hold a festival. At the festival local grassroots organizations held workships to educate and train future activists and a stage hosted several more speakers throughout the rest of the afternoon.

Earlier this year, Greta Thunberg and 46 other youth activists issued a call to everyone around the globe to join them in a massive climate strike on September 20th. The Climate Strike will kick-off a week of mass, escalated actions between Sept 20-28.
School strikers are calling on everyone ― young people, parents, workers, and all concerned people ― to join a massive climate strike on September 20th.
In Portland, following the lead of youth from high schools, middle schools and youth organizations, we will be holding a rally outside of City Hall at 10.30am to demand an Oregon Green New Deal, and an end to fossil fuels here in Oregon.
This is followed by a march through downtown Portland, across the Hawthorne Bridge and over the the Eastbank Esplanade.
On the Eastbank Esplanade we will be holding a Climate Strike Festival near OMSI / the Tilikum Crossing Bridge, with opportunities for folks to become empowered in action for climate justice.

The Portland Winter Light Festival is an annual winter light festival in Portland, Oregon, in the United States. Each year has been presented by the local nonprofit Willamette Light Brigade and powered by Portland General Electric. The festival is always open to the public and free to attend.The event, first held in 2016, featured over 40 light-based art installations, performances by the Last Regiment of Syncopated Drummers, Circus Luminescence and Flamebuoyant and took place around OMSI, The Oregon Rail Heritage Museum and the Portland Spirit. Over 33,000 people were in attendance.
The 2017 festival was held primarily along the waterfront by the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, The Oregon Rail Heritage Museum and the Portland Spirit and across the Willamette River at Zidell Yards, and had smaller installations throughout the city. This year had the official theme of Between the River and the Stars. Over 48,000 people attended in its second year and over 70 artists, performers, and creators participated. Zidell Yards was the site of the Fire Art Garden, and the Art Lantern Parade made its way along Southeast Water Avenue and the Eastbank Esplanade. Educational speakers held panels every night as part of the Light Science Talks showcase. Entertainment along the 1.5-mile route included the Flash Bang Band and Misty Krewe of Nimbus. 2017 also marked a collaboration with the Portland Streetcar transit system which offered free rides to everyone during the event.
The 2018 festival was held in February 1-3, 2018, with the theme The Light of Progress. Art installations were held along the Willamette River and various locations throughout Portland. Artists included the Portland Opera and BodyVox. There were over 100 public art installations, 73 performers, and 12 educational speakers and workshops. Over 142,000 people visited the festival in 2018.

Sunday Night Drum Circle - Portland Oregon
This Drum Circle is every Sunday night under or near the I-5 freeway at S.E. Salmon Street, on the East Bank Esplanade, a few blocks north of the Hawthorne Bridge.
Happens all year round (warmer weather draws more attendees). Gets going around 8 or 9pm and goes on till midnight-2am.

Our 42nd Ave.
Northeast 42nd Avenue is a business district in Northeast Portland, Oregon. The district rests at the confluence of three different neighborhoods — Beaumont-Wilshire, Concordia and Cully. For years, the people of the area have been working to improve 42nd Avenue as a neighborhood-serving commercial district, and community efforts have begun to yield positive results. In October of 2011, the Portland Development Commission announced the launch of the Neighborhood Prosperity Initiative, a program to boost the vitality of neighborhood business districts. 42nd Avenue was selected as a potential participant.
Our 42nd Avenue has been formed to help guide the district's participation in this program. The group is constituted of members from all corners of the community, and is open to anyone who'd like to participate. Its objective is to foster a prosperous, equitable and community-serving commercial district on 42nd Avenue.
