My China Diary:
The Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses are the most significant archaeological excavations of the 20th century. Work is ongoing at this site, which is around 1.5 kilometers east of Emperor Qin Shi Huang's Mausoleum in Lintong, Xian, Shaanxi Province. It is a sight not to be missed by any visitor to China.
A peasant, actually, the farmer, Yang Zhifa, uncovered some pottery while digging for a well nearby the royal tomb in 1974. It caught the attention of archeologists immediately. They came to Xian in droves to study and to extend the digs. They had established beyond doubt that these artifacts were associated with the Qin Dynasty (211-206 BC).
The State Council authorized to build a museum on site in 1975. When completed, people from far and near came to visit. The Museum of Qin Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses have become landmarks on all visitors' itinerary.
Life size terracotta figures of warriors and horses arranged in battle formations are the star features at the museum. They are replicas of what the imperial guard should look like in those days of pomp and vigor.

Upon ascending the throne at the age of 13 (in 246 BC), Qin Shi Huang, later the first Emperor of all China, had begun to work for his mausoleum. It took 11 years to finish. It is speculated that many buried treasures and sacrificial objects had accompanied the emperor in his after life. Terracotta Warriors at Xi'an China
The Terracotta Army Museum lies 1.5 km east of The Tomb of Qin Shihuang, known as the First Emperor, who unified China 2200 years ago. Emperor Qin, from whom China gets its name, ordered the creation of this model army. The Terracotta Army has lain underground for more than 2000 years. However, in 1974, farmers digging a well uncovered one of the greatest archaeological sites in the world. The first part of the Terracotta Army site to be discovered was named Vault One. In 1976, two other vaults were uncovered 20-25 meters from Vault One, and were named Vault Two and Vault Three.

Chinese experts restore 1,400-year-old crown
Chinese archeologists have restored a 1,400-year-old royal crown, which belonged to the wife of Yang Guang, or Emperor Yang of Sui, the second and last monarch of the short-lived Sui Dynasty (581-618).
The crown was unearthed in the tomb of the queen, known as Empress Xiao, in 2012 in Yangzhou, eastern China's Jiangsu Province.
It is the oldest official crown of a queen ever found in China.

CHINA: BEIJING: MUMMIFIED CONCUBINES GO ON DISPLAY FOR FIRST TIME
Mandarin/Nat
The mummified bodies of two Chinese concubines are being exhibited in Beijing for the first time since they were unearthed.
The centuries-old mummies are among the most important archaeological discoveries made in China in recent years.
The mummified bodies of Zhou and Xiang, two high ranking Chinese concubines, have gone on public display for the first time.
Xiang was 56 years old when she died under the Ming Dynasty in 1538, more than 450 years ago.
Her tomb was discovered in April 1991 in Jiangxi province, southwest of China.
She was buried in a grave with her mandarin husband.
Sadly, his coffin had already been robbed and his body taken away along with the precious ornaments believed to have been buried with him.
Perfectly conserved, Xiang's mummy has miraculously withstood the ravages of time.
Zhou was found in the same region in 1988. She died in 1274 under the Song Dynasty, and was 34 years old.
Zhou's body was treated with mercury, giving it a characteristic dark colour.
Her feet were bound, as was traditional during this period for wealthy women.
When she was discovered, Zhou's mummy was lying in wooden coffin which weighed more than a ton.
Several articles of jewellery were found inside.
The discovery of the mummies provided Chinese archaeologists with important historical data.
SOUNDBITE
A lot of things were discovered for the first time from these two graves. For example, the clothing, textile and head ornaments of the Song Dynasty which used to be studied before only through paintings and ceramic figures. So the unearthing of these bodies
filled a void in the field.

Inscriptions in the tombs allowed historians to trace the names, social rank, and family origins of the mummies.
The exhibition in Beijing's Forbidden City continues until July.
