Elderly Woman's Hilarious Failed Attempt At Restoring A 19th Century Fresco In Borja, Spain
The DIY project took place a couple of weeks ago at the the church of Santuario de Misericordia in Borja, Spain, when an elderly woman reportedly took it upon herself to repair a fresco by 19th century Spanish artist Elias Garcia Martinez. Replacing nearly all of Martinez's original brushstrokes, the woman's reimagination of Christ went horribly awry when she turned the detailed figure into what appears to be a featureless monster.

Jesus Painting Fail (Update)
A Spanish woman who made headlines worldwide for her botched attempt to restore a 20th-century painting of Jesus Christ says she has hired lawyers and wants royalties from the fees church owners are charging visitors, according to the daily Spanish-language newspaper El Correo.
The local artist, 80-year-old Cecilia Gimenez, initially defended her volunteer work saying she was restoring the decaying Ecce Homo (Behold the Man) portrait because no one else would. The before and after pictures went viral across the globe and tourists began arriving in droves -- but very few were leaving donations according to Ars Technica. The sanctuary's owners, the Santi Spiritus Hospital Foundation, reportedly made $2,600 in four days from visitors wanting to see Ecce Mono, or Behold the Monkey as it's now called, Ars Technica reported....* Ana Kasparian, Cenk Uygur, and Jayar Jackson break it down on The Young Turks.

Más de tres años después que la restauración fallida de este fresco por una pintora octogenaria colocara al pueblo español de Borja en el mapa turístico mundial, las autoridades locales, en busca de inyectar nueva vida al fenómeno, inauguraron un centro para destacar el hecho.
El alcalde de Borja, Eduardo Arilla, dijo que 160.000 personas han venido a este pueblo en el norte de España para a ver el fresco de Cristo desde que la restauración de Cecilia Giménez se viralizó en 2012.
Dijo que con el nuevo centro esperan atraer a 30.000 personas por año.
Este miércoles Giménez asistió a la inauguración.

Giménez, de 85 años, se convirtió en una sensación cuando surgieron las fotografías en internet del mural Ecce Homo (he aquí el hombre) que desfiguró mientras trataba de restaurarlo. Los tuiteros lo apodaron Ecce Mono (he aquí el mono).
A la ceremonia también asistió la nieta del poco conocido pintor español, Elias García Martinez, quien realizó la obra original hace casi 100 años.

El nuevo centro incluye relatos, fotos y videos que documentan el impacto de la restauración. Los visitantes
podrán ver el fresco en la capilla adjunta, y los que se sientan inspirados tendrán telas para pintar su propia versión.
El centro exhibirá la mercadería oficial, la que también estará disponible en Amazon. Las ganancias se dividirán entre Giménez y el hogar para ancianos del santuario.

STORYLINE:
Following a botched restoration attempt by an octogenarian painter in 2012, the Ecce Homo fresco in the northern Spanish town of Borja now boasts its own information centre.
Located in the town's Sanctuary of Mercy church, the fresco, originally depicting Jesus Christ, reached a level of worldwide fame when local parishioner Cecilia Gimenez attempted to restore it after damp caused parts of the image to peel away.
Gimenez's alterations were originally mistaken as vandalism before she declared that she was responsible.
The information centre was opened in the Ecce Homo's honour on Wednesday afternoon, offering tourists more information about the fresco and the social and media phenomenon that was created.
Gimenez, 85, smiled as she entered the new centre for the inauguration ceremony.
She became a sensation when pictures spread on the Internet of the changes she had made to the Ecce Homo - Latin for Behold the Man.
Twitter users re-dubbed it Ecce Mono, or Behold the Monkey.
Also attending the Wednesday's ceremony was the granddaughter of the little-known Spanish painter of the nearly 100-year-old original, Elias Garcia Martinez.
Teresa Gloria Garcia said her family backed away from requesting a full restoration of the fresco when they saw the interest generated by Gimenez's attempt.
According to Borja Mayor Eduardo Arilla, 160,000 people had come to see the fresco since the story of Gimenez's restoration went viral.
Local officials hope the centre will inject new life into the phenomenon and attract up to 30,000 visitors annually.
The new centre offers the possibility to paint your own Ecce Homo and to make a photomontage with its face.
With the entrance price set at two euros (2.25 US dollars), all proceeds will be given to a foundation that runs a home for the elderly.

The amateur Spanish artist behind the botched restoration of the Ecce Homo fresco in Borja's Sanctuary of Mercy church has capitalised on her new-found fame by opening a gallery to showcase her more orthodox artwork. Cecilia Gimenez' gallery features landscapes, still-lifes and a portrait of Jesus with a crown of thorns. She also sells bottles of wine with that same Jesus-portrait on the label.
Gimenez shot to fame following the startling results of her restoration work on the 19th century Ecce Homo (Behold the Man) mural. The image had originally depicted Jesus with a crown of thorns before Gimenez attempted an unauthorised repair job on the flaking fresco. The result has been dubbed by some as Ecce Mono (Behold the Monkey) for its resemblance to the hairy primate. Others have called the revamped image Beast Jesus. It has since become an Internet meme, inspiring numerous photo-shopped parodies featuring Ecce Mono in such classic works as Edvard Munch's The Scream.
The Sanctuary of Mercy has attracted tens of thousands of visitors on the back of the furore, charging tourists $1.30 (EUR1) to view Beast Jesus. Local residents are also cashing in by selling t-shirts and other merchandise featuring before and after shots of the fresco.
Gimenez herself focuses on the positive outcomes for her town, saying: Right now Borja is known worldwide. It was something really good for Borja and the Sanctuary. People didn't know Borja before and now, after visiting it, they leave really happy.

An unauthorised attempt by a Spanish woman to restore a prized 19th-century fresco of Jesus has become a global sensation.
The botched artwork, that drew ire a year ago, has drawn more than 40,000 visitors to the 80-year-old Cecilia Jimenez’s hometown of Borja and raised some $66,000 for charity.
Authorities decided the damage to the original was too great to repair, but it has become an even greater draw as a result.
