Edgar Allan Poe - The Raven - Our Haunted Travels
Edgar Allan Poe - The Raven
The Raven is a narrative poem by American writer Edgar Allan Poe. First published in January 1845, the poem is often noted for its musicality, stylized language, and supernatural atmosphere. It tells of a talking raven's mysterious visit to a distraught lover, tracing the man's slow fall into madness. The lover, often identified as being a student, is lamenting the loss of his love, Lenore. Sitting on a bust of Pallas, the raven seems to further distress the protagonist with its constant repetition of the word Nevermore. The poem makes use of folk, mythological, religious, and classical references.
In this video we will also be sharing photos that we took when we visited Edgar Allan Poe's dorm room at the University of Virginia in 2017. The room has been sealed off and preserved to be decorated and refurbished back to the time period of when Poe attended the university.
At the second half of this video, you will hear: Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven. Read by Fergus Ross Ferrier. Recorded May 2014 in Edinburgh, Scotland.

5 Places to Visit in Baltimore - What to SEE and EAT!
5 Places to Visit in Baltimore - What to SEE and EAT! || Did you know that the U.S. national anthem originated in Baltimore MD? In this video, I cover 5 fun things to do in Baltimore, one of which is where the anthem was first recited.
●●● VIEW THE BLOG POST: ●●●
Of the Baltimore tourist attractions, the first would be trying a jumbo lump crab cake at Faidley Seafood. This has been a spot on the Baltimore places to visit since 1886, where fresh seafood has been served up.
Of the things to do in downtown Baltimore, Oriole Park is also a great spot. I don't just say that because I am a big baseball fan. This is one of the most beautiful ballparks in baseball, especially with the historic B&O railroad warehouse built into the stadium. You can also meet former Oriole player and MVP Boog Powell at Boog's BBQ. What also makes this one of the places to go in Baltimore is the stadium tour, which takes you inside the press box, suite level, and onto the field!
Third on the list of Baltimore Maryland tourist attractions is the inner harbor. You can visit Federal Hill Park which provides a great view of the city skyline. Also part of the Baltimore inner harbor attractions is the U.S.S. Constellation, a ship that played a big role in stopping slave importation into America. Furthermore, another of the inner harbor attractions is the Star-Spangled Banner Flag House, where the U.S. flag that inspired the U.S. national anthem was created.
Fourth on the list of what to see in Baltimore is Fell's Point. One of the oldest neighborhoods in the city, it has great bars and restaurants and beautiful cobblestone streets. It is an overlooked part of Baltimore sightseeing.
Finally, Fort McHenry and the Edgar Allan Poe gravesite are two Baltimore sights that didn't fit into the other areas covered above. Fort McHenry was the site of the Battle of Baltimore, and where the U.S. national anthem was first recited. The Edgar Allan Poe gravesite honors the famous poet and short story writer.

Edgar Allan Poe in The Bronx: His Life and Times at Poe Cottage
Edgar Allan Poe spent the last years of his life, from 1846 to 1849, in The Bronx at Poe Cottage, now located at Kingsbridge Road and the Grand Concourse. A small wooden farmhouse built about 1812, the cottage once commanded unobstructed vistas over the rolling Bronx hills to the shores of Long Island. It was a bucolic setting in which the great writer penned many of his most enduring poetical works, including “Annabel Lee,” “The Bells” and “Eureka.”
Poe spent much of his life moving from place to place in restless search of literary recognition and financial security. In April 1844, he and his wife, Virginia, and mother-in-law, Maria Clemm, moved to New York, where Poe sought the opportunity for international acclaim. But Virginia was ill, and in early summer of 1846 Poe brought her to The Bronx, where he hoped the country air would rescue her failing health. However, in January of 1847, she died of tuberculosis. Poe himself died two years later, under mysterious circumstances, in Baltimore, MD.
Administered by The Bronx County Historical Society since 1975, the cottage is restored to its original appearance, with authentic period furnishings. A film presentation and guided tour help bring Poe Cottage to life. Visitors can see the bed in which Virginia died and the rocking chair Poe used. In the kitchen, the dishes on the table appear as if the great author had just stepped out for air.
Quoth the Raven: Edgar Allan Poe & Derivative Works
This presentation discusses Edgar Allan Poe's advocacy for copyright law, the breadth of his impact and the many derivative works it has inspired. Poe's work has inspired thousands based on his original stories and poems. For example, Poe's poem The Raven is one of his most widely used works, as it has been used as part of television shows, movies, songs, plays and countless dramatic readings. It is also the only literary work that has an NFL team named after it, the Baltimore Ravens. More than 300 comic books adaptations of Poe's work exist, plus many comics use Poe as a character or as inspiration for a character. Just about every style of music has a song inspired by, or at least mentions, a Poe work. Films dated as far back as 1909 tell Poe's stories. This widespread use of his work is ironic in that Poe was a strong advocate for copyright protections, especially in the international arena, as many of his creative works were reprinted cheaply in England without his permission and without any remuneration.

Edgar Allan Poe (/poʊ/; born Edgar Poe; January 19, 1809 – October 7, 1849) was an American writer, editor, and literary critic. Poe is best known for his poetry and short stories, particularly his tales of mystery and the macabre. He is widely regarded as a central figure of Romanticism in the United States and of American literature as a whole, and he was one of the country's earliest practitioners of the short story. He is generally considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre and is further credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction.[1] He was the first well-known American writer to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career.[2]
Poe was born in Boston, the second child of actors David and Elizabeth Eliza Arnold Hopkins Poe.[3] His father abandoned the family in 1810, and his mother died the following year. Thus orphaned, the child was taken in by John and Frances Allan of Richmond, Virginia. They never formally adopted him, but he was with them well into young adulthood. Tension developed later as John Allan and Edgar Poe repeatedly clashed over debts, including those incurred by gambling, and the cost of Poe's secondary education. He attended the University of Virginia but left after a year due to lack of money. Edgar Poe quarreled with John Allan over the funds for his education and enlisted in the Army in 1827 under an assumed name. It was at this time that his publishing career began with the anonymous collection Tamerlane and Other Poems (1827), credited only to a Bostonian. Edgar Poe and John Allan reached a temporary rapprochement after the death of Frances Allan in 1829. Poe later failed as an officer cadet at West Point, declaring a firm wish to be a poet and writer, and he ultimately parted ways with John Allan.
Poe switched his focus to prose and spent the next several years working for literary journals and periodicals, becoming known for his own style of literary criticism. His work forced him to move among several cities, including Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York City. He married his 13-year-old cousin, Virginia Clemm, in 1836. In January 1845, Poe published his poem The Raven to instant success, but Virginia died of tuberculosis two years after its publication.
Poe planned for years to produce his own journal The Penn (later renamed The Stylus), but he died before it could be produced. He died in Baltimore on October 7, 1849, at age 40; the cause of his death is unknown and has been variously attributed to alcohol, brain congestion, cholera, drugs, heart disease, rabies, suicide, tuberculosis, and other causes.[4]
Poe and his works influenced literature around the world, as well as specialized fields such as cosmology and cryptography. He and his work appear throughout popular culture in literature, music, films, and television. A number of his homes are dedicated museums today. The Mystery Writers of America present an annual award known as the Edgar Award for distinguished work in the mystery genre.
