First ScotRail was a train operating company in Scotland owned by FirstGroup which operated the ScotRail franchise from October 2004 until March 2015. Prior to October 2004 trains were run by ScotRail (National Express). It was succeeded by Abellio ScotRail in March 2015.
It operated most commuter and long-distance services within the country as well as some cross-border services to England, including the Caledonian Sleeper. Of FirstGroup's four train operating companies, ScotRail was the second largest (in terms of number of passenger journeys 2013–14) after First Great Western at the time of closure.
National Express operated the ScotRail franchise from March 1997 until October 2004 as ScotRail.
In July 2003, the Scottish Executive and the Strategic Rail Authority announced Arriva, FirstGroup and National Express had been shortlisted to bid for the new franchise. In June 2004, the franchise was awarded to FirstGroup, with the services operated by ScotRail transferring to First ScotRail on 17 October 2004.
On 1 January 2006, Transport Scotland was created to carry out the Scottish Executive's transport responsibilities including its then newly devolved powers over rail franchising.
In April 2008, Transport Scotland granted First ScotRail a three-year franchise extension until November 2014.
In September 2008, Transport Scotland announced that all First ScotRail trains, including those previously operated on behalf of the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport, would be repainted in a new blue livery with white saltire markings on the carriage ends.[8] The rebranding put less emphasis on the First and is marketed as ScotRail: Scotland's Railway. The first unit to receive the new livery was 170434, unveiled at Glasgow Queen Street on 22 September 2008.
On 8 October 2014, First ScotRail confirmed its bid to retain the franchise had been unsuccessful and that the franchise transferred to Abellio ScotRail on 1 April 2015.
On the evening of 31 March 2015, the Caledonian Sleeper services were split into a new franchise, operated by Serco.

The Darien Venture: The Colony that Bankrupted Scotland
If a Nation’s wealth and power were to be measured in stubbornness, resilience, and inventiveness, rather than GDP, Scotland would be a top-5 Superpower. The people that brought to you televisions, refrigerators, penicillin, and gin & tonic have gone through many a rough patch throughout their history. Very often, hard times were related to their rocky relationship with their Southern neighbours, the English.

Britain's Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited a charity event in London on October 26th, where they met young beneficiaries of the various charities they are supporting.
Prince William and his wife, Kate, were joined by Prince Harry.
Highlight of the royal visit was a wellie-throwing competition between William and Kate, where they were required to throw rubber boots, known as Wellington boots, or wellies for short, at a target.
The Prince managed to knock off the head of a replica of a character of the Shaun the Sheep animation series.
His wife, however, managed to miss several times, to the delight of the princes.
The event was hosted by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts and Aardman Animations, famous for its Wallis and Gromit and Shaun the Sheep creations.
As well as throwing wellies, the princes had a hand at making clay animation models, while Kate starred in a stop-animation movie.

UK: ROYAL WEDDING: EDWARD MARRIES SOPHIE
English/Nat
Britain's Prince Edward wed Sophie Rhys-Jones in the regal grandeur of Windsor Castle's ornate St. George's chapel on Saturday, determined to avoid his siblings' highly publicized stumbles and make his marriage last.
Thousands lined the streets of this small town to celebrate the union of the new Earl of Wessex - the title his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, gave him as a wedding gift - and a radiant Miss Rhys-Jones.
She will hereafter be known as Her Royal Highness the Countess of Wessex.
Despite the royal splendor, it was a relatively modern ceremony for a decidedly modern couple.
The early evening service, attended by just 550 family members and friends, was held well away from London's great cathedrals and with no military processions or official representatives from other countries.
Prince Edward, at 35 the queen's youngest child, is a television producer, and his 34-year-bride a public relations executive.
They dated for almost six years before marrying, and both plan to continue working.
In an interview broadcast on Saturday, the bridegroom said the couple possessed the cornerstone of a successful marriage, explaining that we happen to love each other, which is the most important thing of all.
Their happiness showed during their nuptials, when Edward winked and beamed at his bride and in Miss Rhys-Jones' broad smile before uttering her vows.
The 45-minute service went off smoothly, except for the nerve-wracking moment when it appeared the bride's wedding ring would not slide onto her finger.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Priest: Dear Beloved, we are gathered here today to join this couple in holy matrimony. Edward will you take this woman as your wedded wife, to live together according to God's law in the holy state of matrimony? Will you love her, comfort her, honour and keep her in sickness and in health and forsaking all others keep only unto her for so long as you shall both live?
Edward: I will.
Sophie will you take this man as your wedded husband, to live together according to God's law in the holy state of matrimony? Will you love him, comfort him, honour and keep him in sickness and in health and forsaking all others keep only unto him for so long as you shall both live?
Sophie: I will.

Standing at Edward's side during the ceremony were his two designated supporters - the royal equivalent of best man - brothers Prince Charles and Prince Andrew, both of whose marriages famously failed.
Also in St. George's Chapel was his sister, Princess Anne, who divorced her first husband but has been remarried for almost seven years.
The entire British royal family attended, including the queen and her husband, Prince Philip; Queen Mother Elizabeth, the bridegroom's 98-year-old grandmother; and the sons of Charles and the late Princess Diana, Prince William, 16, and Prince Harry, 14.
Andrew's former wife, Sarah Ferguson, was not invited, and Charles' longtime love, Camilla Parker-Bowles, was notably absent.
After the ceremony, the newlyweds took a jubilant ride in an open-topped carriage through the historic heart of Windsor, past cheering, flag-waving crowds, some of whom had camped overnight to secure prime spots.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Speaker 1: Fantastic.
Speaker 2: Yes absolutely Fantastic, she looked beautiful
Speaker 1: Nicely presented.
Speaker 2: And seeing the horse and carriage coming out just made it all very brilliant.
Question: What did you think ?
Speaker 3: It's a shame the speakers weren't working, it would have been nice to hear the service going on, otherwise it was lovely.
