Lecture by Arthur Watson 'Outwith the Frame, Outwith the Gallery'
Filmed on 27 September 2012 at Edinburgh Printmakers
Part One of our ongoing lecture series featuring Arthur Watson's lecture 'Outwith the frame, Outwith the gallery'.
Arthur is the senior lecturer in the school of Fine Art at Duncan of Jordanstone College, and elected secretary of the Royal Scottish Academy. Arthur looks at artists using prints in Scotland, but extending its traditional contexts. He covers artists from Ian Brakwell's textile prints for Third Eye Centre, to Elizabeth Ogilvie's etched glass screen in Aberdeen Station, to Fiona Banner's screen printed re-visioning of her memories of the film Don't Look Back.
Keep a look out for following instalments of our series!
Lecture by Paul Coldwell 'Printmaking - A Developing History'
From 26 January 2012
For the contemporary printmaker, an infinite range of possibilities are now open to them, from traditional processes dating back centuries to recent digital innovations. From this perspective, Coldwell will offer a broad overview of the history of printmaking, focusing in those key developments, which have shaped this history and consider how artists have responded to these new opportunities. The lecture will also consider how the innovations within digital technology are opening up new ways of printmaking, as well the ways in which it is enabling previous technologies to be revisited.

John Brunsdon - The Printmaker
John Reginald Brunsdon ARCA
John Brunsdon (1933-2014) studied at the Royal College of Art from 1955 to 1958. He was head of the printmaking department at St.Albans College of Art for sixteen years and later lived near Diss on the Suffolk/Norfolk border where he had his own print workshop. He exhibited widely in the United States and Europe, and in New Zealand, Australia, Japan, and Canada, as well as participating in many one-man shows and group exhibitions in the UK. His work is represented in many major public collections, including the Tate Gallery, the British Council, Scottish Museum of Modern Art, the V & A, The Arts Council, the Museum of Modern Art New York. Brunsdon is widely considered one of Britain's most distinguished printmakers.
Landscape was always John's foremost influence, even when images were still abstract and influenced by American abstract expressionists such as Kline and Motherwell. He was fascinated by man's mark on the landscape - the contrast between buildings and countryside: the one temporary the other timeless and primeval.
All of John's work is individually hand etched, inked, coloured and printed. He took delight in the texture and decorative qualities of etched marks and the sweeping shapes of broad colour which fuse into timeless images.

Tate Adams 2004 in his studio Townsville.
Production: Michal Beroun Townsville
A short video filmed in 2003 in Townsville, in the studio of Tate Adams. This video was shot for the promotion of Tate Adams exhibition in Townsville 2004 Gesture as well we intend to obtain funding for an opportunity to create a documentary movie about work and live of Tate Adams. Unfortunately, at that time we could not get any interest or funding from any Townsville organization or government body. So there is no documentary about the great artist and printmaker.
Tate Adams was born at Holywood, Northern Ireland. In 1942 during his war service, he taught himself wood engraving using home made tools on boxwood blocks. Transferred to Ceylon in 1943, he visited temple ruins with a Buddhist priest and artist friend Manjusiro Thero, to draw; Adams also illustrated an army newspaper. Manjusiro introduced him to the work of Japanese printmaker Munakata whom he was to meet on a number of occasions in Japan, before Munakata's death in 1975. In 1949 Adams returned to London where he studied wood engraving under Gertrude Hermes at the Central School of Arts. In 1951 he emigrated to Australia; the following year he enrolled in evening printmaking classes at RMIT, where he developed his printing skills with lithographer and printer Lionel Harrington. He began to exhibit in international print biennales in 1954 with the 'First international colour woodcut exhibition' (1954-56 tour of UK, Europe, USA) and in 1956 finished a Diploma in Illustration specialising in book production at RMIT, which he saw as a necessary precursor to establishing his own press.
In 1957 he went to London, then Dublin where he worked for Dolmen Press, which published his book 'The soul cages'; this signalled the beginning of his involvement with limited edition books. He returned to Melbourne in 1959 and taught briefly at Caulfield Technical College and an evening printmaking class at RMIT. In 1960 he established Australia's first Diploma of Printmaking course at RMIT and forged links with artists who wanted to make prints using the facilities there, such as Fred Williams, Leonard French and George Baldessin. In 1963 he organized an exhibition 'Forty two prints by seven artists' which toured nationally, and opened the Crossley Gallery, Melbourne in 1966, devoted to showing prints. The inaugural exhibition included the work of Japanese as well as Australian contemporary artists. By 1968 he had turned his attention away from his own wood engravings, colour linocuts and lithographs, to focus on the development of artist's books. With George Baldessin he established Lyre Bird Press in 1977, the first in Australia to produce high quality books in the tradition of the French livre d'artiste; he moved the press to Townsville in 1989, where he also became associated with the Art School of the James Cook University. 'Clown' was printed by the artist from five blocks at the RMIT workshop; it was exhibited in the Gallery's national touring exhibition 'Australian Print Survey' of 1963-64.

Shaun Downey's Blue Coco Fest
Promotional Video for Shaun Downey's exhibition Blue Coco Fest which took place at Engine Gallery Toronto on May 28th 2011.
Come celebrate the return of Blue Coco, Shaun Downey's painting that was displayed at the National Portrait Gallery in London England last summer.
As part of the BP Portrait Award 2010, Blue Coco was one of 55 paintings selected from over 2100 International entries chosen for exhibition. It was also used as the lead advertising image for the exhibition, and appeared on posters throughout the Underground, on the catologue cover, and also appeared on a massive banner which draped the front of the National Portrait Gallery for the entire summer.
An article featuring the story of the painting's development and success was featured on the front page of the Toronto Star last August as well. Read it here....
Come view the painting, the study drawing, and see all of the different ways the painting made waves in London and in Downey's career as an artist. Letters from fans, the exhibition's print material, and photographs from Shaun's visit to London will all be displayed. There will also be a number of Shaun's recent paintings and drawings available for viewing.
There wlil be limited edition archival giclee prints of Blue Coco made available at the event, an edition of 50 on heavy stock. There will also be a special edition of 10 giclees on canvas, which are mounted on panel and displayed in a frame identical to that of the original painting,
hand painted by the artist himself.
Also, to celebrate this achievement, and to promote portrait painting in Toronto, Shaun has teamed up with the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition to present a Portrait Prize to one of the exhibitors in this year's show. The TOAE is celebrating it's 50 year in July, and since Shaun first exhibited his painting at the show in 2003, he has chosen to give back to his community of artists and jury and donate $500 for the Shaun Downey portrait prize.
To further the award, those attending the event will have the opportunity to have their portrait taken by a photographer in front of the same wallpaper that is featured in Blue Coco, and for 20 dollars will receive a print of the photo to commemorate the evening. All proceeds will be added to the award amount for the portrait prize.
With the model and artist in attendance, a variety of delicious food and drink, and great music spinning all night long, this is the spring art event that you don't want to miss.

At a Printmakers Workshop - BBC documentary from 1970
This 1970 BBC film follows the work done at Studio Prints, the workshop responsible for printing the etchings of many prominent British artists of the last 40 years, including Lucien Freud, Frank Auerbach, Ken Kiff, Julian Trevelyan, R. B. Kitaj, Celia Paul and Stephen Conroy.
Studio Prints was started in 1968 by artist and printmaker Dorothea Wight, and until 2011 from a workshop in Kentish Town, north London. She was joined by artist and master printmaker Marc Balakjian in 1974 and together they built up a reputation as one of the worlds leading print workshops.
Dorothea passed away in May 2013, aged 68. Marc passed away in August 2017 aged 79.

OUTLAW PRINTMAKING - unspeakable resolution - NCUR2013 - (Liars & NoMas Present)
9 months after a manic odyssey took two young souls on a 10 day, 3600 mile journey across the United States, Liars & NoMas bring you resolution. Two men, fueled by redactable substance and funded by a public university, stand before you bare, stripped of their shackles and reborn under the influence of the OUTLAW PRINTMAKERS. Fulfilling their academic obligations, this was the video presentation shown at the National Conference of Undergraduate Research, in conjunction with a rather obtrusive gallery installation. It was meant to show what they did and what they found, presented as a challenge to the viewer to effectively dissect a higher meaning for the slander and filth. You may not enjoy, you may not approve, you may be offended. No one ever meant for this to be easy. Please take the time to critically consider the horror you have witnessed.
