Himeji Castle, Himeji (Japan) - Travel Guide
Take a tour of Himeji Castle in Himeji, Japan -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Japan, like Europe, has many wonderful medieval castles, though they are of a distinctly different style.
The largest and best preserved castle in the country is Himeji Castle in Himeji, Japan.
Many people know the castle as the White Egret Castle, referring to its gleaming color and soaring design.
The castle grew out of a small fort that was built on this hill in 1333.
Throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth century, Himeji Castle grew and expanded to the shape that it has today.
Because of its history and great beauty, the castle has been made into a national treasure and a World Heritage Site.

- In this video we will show you the samurai castle of Himeji (Honshu Island, Japan), a UNESCO world heritage monument popularly called the “White Egret Castle”, due to the white colour of its walls. Built between the 16th and 17th centuries during the most turbulent times of the feudal age, it is the best preserved, the most beautiful and also the largest castle in Japan. It has 83 buildings covering an area of more than 100 hectares, surrounded by three defensive rings of moats, embankments and walls.

Himeji Castle
Himeji Castle is one of the best examples of Japanese castles in ... well ... Japan. It's also known as the white heron and it's pristine condition is largely due to the fact that it was never actually stormed as well as restoration efforts. Fun fact: it's also been featured in a number of movies including a 007 flick!

Himeji Castle (姫路城 Himeji-jō) is a hilltop Japanese castle complex located in the city of Himeji, Hyōgo, Japan. The castle is regarded as the finest surviving example of prototypical Japanese castle architecture, comprising a network of 83 buildings with advanced defensive systems from the feudal period. The castle is frequently known as Hakuro-jō or Shirasagi-jō (White Egret Castle or White Heron Castle) because of its brilliant white exterior and supposed resemblance to a bird taking flight.
Himeji Castle dates to 1333, when Akamatsu Norimura built a fort on top of Himeyama hill. The fort was dismantled and rebuilt as Himeyama Castle in 1346, and then remodeled into Himeji Castle two centuries later. Himeji Castle was then significantly remodeled in 1581 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who added a three-story castle keep. In 1600, Tokugawa Ieyasu awarded the castle to Ikeda Terumasa for his help in the Battle of Sekigahara, and Ikeda completely rebuilt the castle from 1601 to 1609, expanding it into a large castle complex. Several buildings were later added to the castle complex by Honda Tadamasa from 1617 to 1618. For over 400 years, Himeji Castle has remained intact, even throughout the extensive bombing of Himeji in World War II, and natural disasters such as the 1995 Great Hanshin earthquake.
Why Himeji is Japan's Greatest Castle
Himeji Castle is Japan's most famous castle; but does it live up to the hype? Ryotaro and I visit for the first time as we continue our Journey Across Japan, visiting the world's largest suspension bridge along the way.

Himeji Castle (姫路城, Himejijō), also known as White Heron Castle (Shirasagijo) due to its elegant, white appearance, is widely considered Japan's most spectacular castle for its imposing size and beauty and its well preserved, complex castle grounds. The castle is both a national treasure and a world heritage site. Unlike many other Japanese castles, it was never destroyed by war, earthquake or fire and survives to this day as one of the country's twelve original castles. The castle recently underwent extensive renovation over several years and was fully re-opened to the public in March 2015.

Замок белой цапли. Япония, Химедзи(Castle egret. Japan, Himeji)

Himeji castle, at the foot of which lies the eponymous town, is located in the Western part of Japan 55 km from Kobe and 650 km from Tokyo. Built in the 14th century on the hill Hime-pit castle complex than once changed owners and changed himself. Radical changes in his appearance occurred in the late 16th century when the military leader Toyotomi Hideyoshi: added many сетэнсю - small turrets. It preserved till our days - 83 wooden buildings covered with white lime walls and high Foundation stone on the picturesque and quite extensive (220 thousand m2) site. Despite the breadth of the whole complex looks very elegant and seems light and air, so romantic name «lock of the white Heron» he fits in quite handy. And in April, when the cherry blossoms around, the visitor the feeling of presence in a fairy tale, where and look out of the gate'll make a beautiful Princess or a flashing sword of the valiant samurai.
Himeji perfectly combines beauty and elegance with defensive functions. It surrounds a system of three trenches, and garden is a labyrinth with lots of puffins to disorient the enemy. The curves on the corners of the castle of stone walls, reminiscent of outdoor fan (OIG-but-кобай)served not only as a special decoration, but also a barrier for enemies. The walls have loopholes (myself): rectangular loopholes for the archers (I-дзама), round or square - for firing muskets (тэппо-дзама), and the long narrow openings (IRS-отоси) and the groove in the bottom of the wall - to drop stones and water accursed head of boiling water or oil.

The Himeji White Tour
Himeji Castle, also known as the White Heron Castle, is the symbol of Himeji City. A fresh image for the city is inspired by the word “Shiro”, which means “white” in Japanese. The Shoshazan Engyoji Temple is known as one of the settings of the film The Last Samurai. We visit a Japanese sake brewery and the young female chief brewer in charge, tasting some sake made from pure white rice, and also feature white bean paste “shiro-azuki” confection at Kineya Japanese sweets shop to conclude the trip. This segment features Himeji experiences with the “Shiro” theme.
