What Is Coronavirus?
Health officials around the world are racing to gauge the danger posed by a new SARS-like virus that emerged in central China last month and spread rapidly, sickening hundreds and killing at least six.
Authorities are acting aggressively as the number of cases in China has grown to more than 300 and stretched to five additional countries, including the first diagnosis in the U.S. The World Health Organization will decide Wednesday whether to declare the virus an international public health emergency, a designation used for complex epidemics that can cross borders.
As they did during the SARS and Ebola outbreaks, health officials and scientists are tracking patients and testing samples of saliva and other fluids to determine the exact cause and severity of their ailments. They’re identifying and monitoring people with whom the patients were in contact to see if the virus is spreading easily from person to person. And they are placing restrictions on travel to try to limit the exposure to scores of new people.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention expanded its inspection of airline passengers who had spent time in China to airports in Atlanta and Chicago on Tuesday, building on the 1,200 people who had been screened in California and New York over the weekend. No new cases were uncovered. Six patients in China have died from the infection, which also sickened health-care workers who were caring for them.
“This is an evolving situation,” said Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. “We do expect additional cases in the United States and globally.”
Researchers at the National Institutes of Health and the CDC are working on a test that will allow doctors to rapidly diagnose the virus in the field, said Schaffner, though Messonnier cautioned that it could take time.
They also started preliminary work on a vaccine to prevent the infection, Schaffner said. That could also take time, however. A vaccine for Ebola that was recently approved in the U.S. took several years to develop following outbreaks in Africa in the past decade.

Typhoon Sanba heads toward Japan with 150 MPH winds as a Category 4 hurricane. Canada closes its Embassy in Cairo Egypt just days after closing their Embassy in Iran.
The attacks on U.S. Embassies had very little to do with the latest film and much more to do with the old story of the Muhammad Cartoon and the failure of Muslims to prosecute internationally the culprits who drew the Muhammad cartoons. This will be another attempt to change the laws globally ala the Hegelian dialectic of problem-reaction-solution.
Report: Egyptian Intelligence Warned of Embassy Attacks as Early as Sept 4
The film, to experts, only served as a convenient excuse for Islamists — particularly Salafists and members of the Muslim Brotherhood — to escalate tensions to a fever pitch in the hopes of achieving their ultimate goal: To make slandering Islam unlawful on an international level.
The protest was attended by leaders of Islamic movements, most notably Mohammad al-Zawahiri, brother of al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri; a number of sons of Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman, the Emir of the Gamaa Islamiyya group; Sheikh Gamal Saber, coordinator of the Hazimoun movement and Sheikh Abu-Yahya al-Masri, spokesman for the Salafist Voice of Wisdom Coalition, which called for the protests.
Zawahiri said that the US government's response — by issuing a statement through its embassy in Cairo condemning the producers of the video that insults the Prophet — was not enough. He added that the filmmakers should be arrested and brought to trial, like Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman, who was falsely accused of slander and inciting violence.
They also called for the severing of all relations with the United States and withdrawing the Egyptian ambassador from Washington, since the United States has once more allowed pastor Terry Jones — who had previously burned the Koran three times — to insult the Prophet.
Ahmad Khalil, spokesman for the Salafist Nour Party, said that the party supports all escalatory measures against the offenders of the Prophet, adding that the party will stand in the face of anyone who tries to insult Islam anywhere in the world.
For their part, Muslim Brotherhood youths announced via official and unofficial websites their participation in the million-man demonstration. Ali Khafagy, secretary-general of the youth committee in the Freedom and Justice Party, an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood, denied that the party made a formal decision to take part in the demonstration.

STORYLINE
Israel continued to bomb Gaza on Thursday, killing at least five people including four militants, as rocket fire from Lebanon threatened to open a new front for Israel in the north.
And scarcely had the day begun when what appeared to be a rocket fired from Gaza towards Israel left its trail across the sky.
Israel briefly interrupted its Gaza offensive on Wednesday after announcing a three-hour lull to allow in humanitarian aid through Israeli-controlled border crossings.
But violence continued straight afterwards.
Israel heavily bombed around suspected smuggling tunnels near the border with Egypt and its planes destroyed at least 16 empty houses.
AP Television pictures showed several buildings reduced to rubble in Rafah.
The Rafah tunnels are a core issue in the debates over a possible cease fire deal put forward by Egypt and France.
Israel and the United States are demanding that border monitors destroy tunnels that Hamas has used to smuggle arms into Gaza from Egypt.
Hamas also resumed firing rockets and on Thursday, six rockets from Gaza hit towns in southern Israel.
Israel's assault also carried on with full force. Palestinians earlier reported some two dozen airstrikes around Gaza City before dawn and said one militant was killed and 10 people wounded.
An airstrike in northern Gaza killed three members of a rocket-launching cell, Palestinian medical officials said.
An airstrike in Gaza City destroyed a mosque and wounded 15 people, Palestinians said.
Later on Thursday, air-raid sirens went off again in northern Israel.

Well it finally happened, I went to the worst reviewed hair salon in my city Los Angeles and this is what happened and I was totally shocked! I searched for the worst rated and worst reviewed hair salon hair stylist in my city, and filmed the entire process. My hair looks like... well... you'll see lol. The United States Army announced on Tuesday it has begun to destroy the country’s remaining stockpile of chemical weapons held at the Pueblo Chemical Depot in southern Colorado.
A process called the Explosive Destruction System will be used to destroy an estimated 1,300 damaged chemical munitions containing mustard agent at the Pueblo Chemical Agent Destruction Pilot Plant, according to a statement by the U.S. Department of Defence.
Ninety percent of the U.S.’ mustard and nerve agents were destroyed at depots in Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Maryland, Oregon, Utah and the Johnson Atoll in the Pacific, in 2012. The remaining nerve agents are stored at two depots in Colorado and Kentucky, according to CNN.
