Driving Around El Paso, Texas
El Paso (/ɛlˈpæsoʊ/; from Spanish, the pass) is the county seat of El Paso County, Texas, United States. The city is situated in the far western corner of the state of Texas.
El Paso stands on the Rio Grande (Río Bravo del Norte) river across the border from Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico. The two cities, along with Las Cruces (in the neighboring state of New Mexico), form a combined international metropolitan area, sometimes referred as the Paso del Norte or El Paso–Juárez–Las Cruces. The region of over 2.7 million people constitutes the largest bilingual, binational work force in the western hemisphere.[6][7]
The city is the headquarters of one Fortune 500 and three publicly traded companies,[8] as well as home to the Medical Center of the Americas,[9] the only medical research and care provider complex in West Texas and southern New Mexico,[10] and the University of Texas at El Paso, the city's primary university. The city hosts the annual Sun Bowl college football post-season game, the second oldest bowl game in the country.[11]
El Paso has a strong federal and military presence. William Beaumont Army Medical Center, Biggs Army Airfield, and Fort Bliss call the city home. Fort Bliss is one of the largest military complexes of the United States Army and the largest training area in the United States.[12] Also headquartered in El Paso are the DEA domestic field division 7, El Paso Intelligence Center, Joint Task Force North, U.S. Border Patrol El Paso Sector, and U.S. Border Patrol Special Operations Group (SOG).

At least 22 people have been injured in the shooting at a shopping center in El Paso.
Eleven of the victims have been transported to the University Medical Center of El Paso, according to Ryan Mielke, the hospital's Director of Public Affairs. Their injuries range from severe to non-life threatening.
Del Sol Medical Center has also received 11 people from the scene of the shooting, according to hospital spokesman Victor Guerrero.
Del Sol said it is not expecting any additional patients at this time.
Walmart: 'We're in shock over the tragic events'
Walmart issued a statement in light of the shooting at an El Paso shopping center.
We're in shock over the tragic events at Cielo Vista Mall in El Paso, where store 2201 & club 6502 are located, the retailer said. We're praying for the victims, the community & our associates, as well as the first responders. We're working closely with law enforcement & will update as appropriate.
The scene in El Paso is unfolding in the same week that two employees were fatally shot at a Walmart store in Southaven, Mississippi, and three people were shot and killed at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in California.
Multiple people are dead, with at least 18 taken to hospitals Saturday after a shooting near a shopping mall in El Paso, Texas, law enforcement officials said. One suspect, a man, is in custody, police said.
A second person was also taken into custody by authorities, but it is not immediately known what role, if any, the person played in the shooting, sources familiar with the investigation told NBC News.
El Paso police said the initial calls about the incident came at about 10 a.m. local time. By about 1 p.m. police said there was no imminent threat at that point. Earlier, in several tweets, police urged people to stay away from the area near the Cielo Vista mall due to an active shooter.
Police said at one point that they were receiving reports of multiple shooters but later said they believe there was only one.

We’re praying for the victims, the community & our associates, as well as the first responders, a statement posted on Twitter read. We’re working closely with law enforcement & will update as appropriate.
A University Medical Center of El Paso spokesman said multiple victims have been taken to different hospitals. University Medical Center got at least 10 victims with level one injuries, which is the most serious level, spokesman Ryan Mielke said.
Our hearts go out to those who have been injured and the families of those who may have been killed, El Paso Mayor Dee Margo said during an interview with NBC affiliate KTSM in El Paso.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said in a statement Saturday that he is headed to El Paso.
“While no words can provide the solace needed for those impacted by this event, I ask that all Texans join Cecilia and me in offering our prayers for the victims and their families,” he said. “The state of Texas will do everything it can to ensure justice is delivered to the perpetrators of this heinous act.”
Rep. Veronica Escobar, D-Texas, was an hour into a town hall meeting at Coronado High School 15 miles from the mall, when she abruptly had to end the event because of the shooting.
“You all, I am so sorry,” she said. “There is an active shooter. We are going to need to clear the event.”

The crowd gasped in response and began to move, according to the congresswoman’s Facebook Live video.
“Oh, it’s at Cielo Vista,” Escobar quickly clarified before apologizing for not being clearer.“We’ve been asked by law enforcement to just send everybody home,” she said.
A reunification site for families of possible victims was set up at a local school.
El Paso Community College said in a tweet that all of its campuses have been evacuated out of an abundance of caution.
Democratic presidential hopeful Beto O’Rourke of El Paso urged residents in El Paso to stay safe.
Truly heartbreaking, he wrote in a tweet. Please follow all directions of emergency personnel as we continue to get more updates.

A Look UP at Bottom of Trail in El Paso, Texas
El Paso, (pronounced /ɛlˈpæsoʊ/) is a city in and the county seat of El Paso County, Texas, United States, and lies in far West Texas. In the 2010 census, the city had a population of 649,121.[1] It is the sixth largest city in Texas and the 19th largest city in the United States. Its metropolitan area covers all of El Paso County, whose population in the 2010 census was 800,647.[1]
El Paso stands on the Rio Grande (Río Bravo del Norte), across the border from Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico. The image to the right shows Downtown El Paso and Juárez, with the Juárez Mountains in the background. The two cities form a combined international metropolitan area, sometimes called Juarez-El Paso, with Juárez being the significantly larger of the two in population. Together they have a combined population of 2 million, with Juárez accounting for 2/3 of the population. In 2010 El Paso was awarded an All-America City Award, the oldest community recognition program in the United States.
El Paso is home to the University of Texas at El Paso (founded in 1914 as The Texas State School of Mines and Metallurgy, and later, Texas Western College; its present name dates from 1967) and the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at El Paso. Fort Bliss, one of the largest military complexes of the United States Army, lies to the east and northeast of the city, with training areas extending north into New Mexico, up to the White Sands Missile Range and neighboring Holloman Air Force Base in Alamogordo. The Franklin Mountains extend into El Paso from the north and nearly divide the city into two sections, the western half forming the beginnings of the Mesilla Valley and with the eastern slopes connecting in the central business district at the south end of the mountain range.
