Family Road Trip Southwest USA '17 - National Parks + El Santuario de Chimayo
Two years ago we took our first road trip with our kids and enthusiastically agreed to make road tripping across the U.S. our yearly family tradition. So far we have kept our end of the deal (though there is always enough “I’m NEVER doing this EVER again” mumble to keep us guessing)... :)
This time we visited 4 national parks and monuments (Capitol Reef, Mesa Verde, Great Sand Dunes, Bandelier) and the beautiful El Santuario de Chimayo Shrine, plus whatever caught our eyes along the way.
We did some unexpected off-roading, traced the steps of Ancestral Puebloans and found (and left) some amazing ancient artifacts, climbed up mountains and sand dunes and waded in a snowmelt spring, explored cool water-worn slot canyons, did some stargazing under the rustling wings of clouds of bats, camped at every single destination (we ARE a bit nuts), and just allowed ourselves to get engulfed in the molecules of raw nature that we miss so much here in the city.
It was....amazing!!! :)

New Mexico: Chimayó Chapel
Chimayó is derived from a Tewa name for a local landmark, the hill of Tsi Mayoh.
The Potrero plaza of Chimayó is known internationally for its Catholic chapel, the Santuario de Nuestro Señor de Esquipulas, commonly known as El Santuario de Chimayó.
A private individual built it by 1816 so that local people could worship Jesus as depicted at Esquipulas; preservationists bought it and handed it over to the Archdiocese of Santa Fe in 1929.
The chapel is now managed by the Archdiocese as a Catholic church.
For its reputation as a healing site (believers claim that dirt from a back room of the church can heal physical and spiritual ills), it has become known as the Lourdes of America, and attracts close to 300,000 visitors a year, including up to 30,000 during Holy Week (the week prior to Easter).
It has been called no doubt the most important Catholic pilgrimage center in the United States. The sanctuary was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970.
Chimayó and nearby areas of Rio Arriba County are known for a half-century of drug problems, including heroin distribution and usage, property crimes, record rates of deaths due to overdose, and large-scale federal drug raids. After a raid in 1999, much of the heroin traffic moved from Chimayó to the nearby town of Española.
CHIMAYO, NEW MEXICO
The small town of Chimayo, New Mexico is said to cultivate the World's best chili. The flavor of the unique peppers they grow is milder with a delicious smoky flavor. It is hard to come by though, because the area where it can be grown is small and there aren't a lot of farmers who grow it. People who do grow it are often hesitant to sell it, keeping it for their families and friends instead.
