Russia: New injector could double output of Large Hadron Collider in Novisibirsk
Scientists from the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics have developed part of an injector that could more than double the performance of the Large Hadron Collider and enable work on other improvements, as explained by the head of the laboratory Aleksei Tribendis, in Novosibirsk, Friday.

The structures we used here are new and unique. It will be the first case when structures of this kind will work in a functioning collider.

At that moment the step towards doubling the luminosity of the collider will be made.

RUSSIA: MOSCOW: EXPLOSION ON TROLLEY BUS

An explosion ripped through a packed trolley bus in the center of Moscow on Thursday, injuring at least five people.
The explosion took place about 9 in the morning local time when the trolley approached Pushkin Square, the most popular meeting place in the capital about a half-mile from the Kremlin.
It was the second explosion on Moscow's busy public transportation system in a month. In June, an explosion on the subway killed four people and injured a dozen more just days before Russia's presidential election.
Reports said the explosives were planted under the front door of the trolley.
Witnesses said the blast shattered the driver's compartment and the front of the vehicle.

At least five people were believed to be wounded. Three of them were hospitalised.
Rescue workers were dispatched to the scene of the explosion and police were investigating.
Moscow is crisscrossed by the trolleybus system, which operates off electricity lines.
Later today, Alexander Lebed is due to brief reporters on his new programme for fighting crime and terrorism in nation's capital.

Strategic Missile Troops
The Strategic Missile Troops or Strategic Rocket Forces of the Russian Federation or RVSN RF are a military branch of the Russian Armed Forces that controls Russia's land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles. The RVSN was first formed in the Soviet Armed Forces, and when the USSR collapsed in 1990–1991, it effectively changed its name from the Soviet to the Russian Strategic Rocket Forces.
The Strategic Rocket Forces were created on December 17, 1959 as the main Soviet force used for attacking an enemy's offensive nuclear weapons, military facilities, and industrial infrastructure. They operated all Soviet nuclear ground-based intercontinental, intermediate-range ballistic missile, and medium-range ballistic missile with ranges over 1,000 kilometers. Complementary strategic forces within Russia are the Long Range Aviation and the Russian Navy's ballistic missile submarines.

Update: the polarity of the Micro Amp meter does not (!) have to be reversed. The video shows a setup of a 4 transistor electronic circuit (one of them is a FET) electrometer with which you can make visible (or calculate with a chronometer) the charge of tiny capacitance and charge in the 300 pF – 10 pF range. Say useful in electrochemistry when charges are measured or when a certain amount of charge defines the end-point of a chemical reaction.
Press the button switch for 5 seconds to get (say) a tiny capacitor properly charged, loosen that switch and watch the pointer of the uA meter falling to zero.
Set the sensitivity to its maximum so that the “0” falls halfway on the scale of the Micro Ampère meter (more in the video).
You can do serious measurements and/or comparitive measurements, comparing the found values with already known capacitors/capacitance or known charges.
For higher value capacitors (say 1000 pF and higher) the discarge time will be very (too) long. Thus could take a long time till the meter falls to (quasi) zero.
Properties of the circuit: the “0” issue is described in the video. The circuit is practical usable when (of course, given the electronic laws & properties of components) some standard things are taken in account: room temperature must be constant, a setup with as less stray capacitance as possible must be made (so not on a standard electronic experiment board sold in the shops).
The (small) drift of the 3 stage Darlington can be taken in account via repeated measurements.
Anyway: it is usable and gives good indications about charge (say: Pico Coulomb) and capacitance (Pico Farad).

A plasma propulsion engine is a type of electric propulsion that generates thrust from a quasi-neutral plasma. This is in contrast to ion thruster engines, which generate thrust through extracting an ion current from plasma source, which is then accelerated to high velocities using grids/anodes. These exist in many forms (see electric propulsion). Plasma thrusters do not typically use high voltage grids or anodes/ cathodes to accelerate the charged particles in the plasma, but rather uses currents and potentials which are generated internally in the plasma to accelerate the plasma ions. While this results in a lower exhaust velocities by virtue of the lack of high accelerating voltages, this type of thruster has a number of interesting advantages. The lack of high voltage grids of anodes removes a possible limiting element as a result of grid ion erosion. The plasma exhaust is 'quasi-neutral', which means that ion and electrons exist in equal number, which allows simply ion- electron recombination in the exhaust to neutralise the exhaust plume, removing the need for an electron gun (hollow cathode). This type of thruster often generates the source plasma using radio frequency or microwave energy, using an external antenna. This fact, combined with the absence of hollow cathodes (which are very sensitive to all but the few noble gases) allows the intriguing possibility of being able to use this type of thruster on a huge range of propellants, from argon, to carbon dioxide, air mixtures to astronaut urine.
Plasma engines are better suited for long-distance interplanetary space travel missions.
In recent years, many agencies have developed several forms of plasma-fueled engines, including the European Space Agency, Iranian Space Agency and Australian National University, which have co-developed a more advanced type described as a double layer thruster. However, this form of plasma engine is only one of many types.
Plasma engines have a much higher specific impulse (Isp) value than most other types of rocket technology. The VASIMR engine is capable of reaching an impulse value of over 12000, while hall thrusters can reach about 2000. This is much higher than the chemical bipropellant fuel that is sometimes used that can reach a specific impulse of 450. With high impulse, these rockets are capable of reaching relatively high speeds. Ex-astronaut Franklin Chang-Diaz claims his VASIMR engine could send a payload to Mars in as little as 39 days while reaching a max velocity of 34 miles per second. The trend is the same for other plasma rockets.
Certain plasma thrusters, such as the mini-helicon, are hailed for their simple design and ease of use. With cheap fuel (a large number of gases or combinations of gases can be used as fuel), and relatively simple theory of performance, plasma rockets can be used more than once, and be easily built. Plasma rockets also do not have to spend all of their fuel all at once unlike traditional chemical rockets. This allows plasma rockets to change speed in flight, and even change direction midflight as well.
For some plasma thruster technologies, such as Berkant Goskel's tiny plasma thruster, one of the largest problems is generating enough electricity to turn gases into plasma. This same problem plagues Diaz's VASIMR thruster. Diaz's device would need so much electricity, that any vehicle that uses a VASIMR engine would also need several nuclear reactors in order to generate enough power. Not only would the reactors add mass to the payload, this has caused concern by some who fear the possible fallout caused by an explosion of the reactor. Because of this possibility, NASA has previously stopped research in nuclear reactors that could be sent up into space.
Another common issue plasma rockets have run into is the possibility of the rocket breaking itself. Over time, the plasma these rockets produce will damage the walls of the device ultimately causing it to break. This means that on a mission to Mars, it is possible that the rocket will destroy itself.
