Reception Belgian Embassy Moscow
RUSSIA: US EMBASSY ATTACKED
Russian/Nat
Russian riot police armed with Kalashnikovs have sealed off the U-S embassy in Moscow, the day after terrorists attempted to launch a grenade at the building.
Special forces did not allow any demonstrators near the building in central Moscow, where demonstrations have taken place since NATO started airstrikes on Yugoslavia.
But Russian politicians once again spoke of their concern at the action being taken against the forces of Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic.
Days of anti U-S demonstrations have taken their toll on the American embassy in central Moscow.
Russian police searched on Monday for gunmen who fired on the building a day earlier, in an attack apparently linked to Russian protests against NATO airstrikes in Yugoslavia.
Unknown gunmen had attempted to launch a grenade at the embassy, which led to a gun battle with police.
No one was hurt in the incident and no one has claimed responsibility for the attack.
But the country has numerous extremist groups that regard the United States as an enemy of Russia and many regular civilians deeply against strikes on Yugoslavia.
The embassy was open for business as usual but security was tight.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
We have sealed off the building of the embassy and the adjacent territory. We took such measures after the incident yesterday.
SUPER CAPTION: Police Lieutenant
The large Russian police presence on Monday far outnumbered the demonstrators who have gathered outside the embassy every day since the NATO bombings began last week.
Russia has been a harsh critic of the airstrikes, but its response has so far been limited to mostly symbolic actions, such as suspending contact with NATO.
But their are intense concerns at the possibility of high civilian causalities as a result of the NATO action.
Speaker Gennady Seleznov, said the Duma was sending a commission to Yugoslavia to investigate the matter.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
I myself would like to find out the true figures (casualties), I'd like to see the planes that have been shot down, I'd like to see the wounded that are suffering because of these barbaric airstrikes. The press should show all this in detail. I'd like to see it with my own eyes.
SUPER CAPTION: Gennady Seleznov, Duma speaker
Meanwhile, Russian sources have claimed Yugoslav forces used Russian weaponry to bring down an American Stealth bomber, on Sunday.
And some Russian officials have suggested that Moscow break the international arms embargo against the Balkan nation.
Nationalist leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky repeated his call for Russia to deliver arms to Yugoslavia, including the state-of-the-art S-300 anti-aircraft system.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
We have the most powerful anti-aircraft system in the world, the Russian system. The S-300 is already out of date. We have the S-400. We can shoot down any aeroplane, even the Stealth bomber, any cruise missile long before they cross the border. We have anti-ship missiles which can destroy the ships from where the airstrikes are launched.
SUPER CAPTION: Nationalist leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky
It's not clear how much sway Moscow has with President Milosevic.
Russia was part of the six-nation Contact Group that mediated between Yugoslavia and Kosovo's ethnic Albanians.
And Boris Yeltsin's government has encouraged Belgrade to sign a political agreement that would give Kosovo autonomy.
But both Russia and Yugoslavia are opposed to stationing NATO troops in Kosovo to implement the agreement.
With the United States very much in favour of the use of military force to quash Milosevic's forces, staff at the embassy in Moscow are prepared for continued anti-U-S sentiment.

Belgium summons Russian ambassador over Aleppo air raid claims
Belgium's foreign ministry has summoned Russia's ambassador to the country, after Moscow claimed Belgian jets from the US-led coalition killed six civilians in airstrikes near the Syrian city of Aleppo. The Russian defense ministry said the killing occurred in the village of Hassajik early on Tuesday, when two Belgian F-16s were identified. It added there were no Russian or Syrian aircraft in the vicinity when the raid took place. However, the Belgian defense ministry has denied the country's air force was active in the area at that time.

Russia - Hostage attack in Swedish embassy
T/I: 11:21:00 GS 10:29:14
A Swedish diplomat said Saturday (20/12) his fluent Russian saved his life after a lone gunman took him hostage for several hours in a bloody drama which ended with the death of his captor and a special forces officer. Anti-terrorist Alpha troops opened fire on the gunman as he helped a Federal Security Service (FSB) colonel, who had apparently suffered a heart-attack, from a car in which he had been held after replacing the Swedish diplomat as a hostage. Television pictures showed Colonel Anatoly Savelyev, 51, was struck by several shots when FSB marksmen opened fire as he was lying prostrate on the ground. The gunman, named by police as Sergei Kobyakov, was shot dead. The drama started late Friday when Kobyakov forced his way into Nystroem's car and made him drive into the Swedish embassy grounds, in southwest Moscow, and threatened him with a handgrenade. Kobyakov demanded three million dollars ransom and safe passage out of Russia in exchange for the diplomat's release.

LEBANON: BEIRUT: RUSSIAN EMBASSY HIT BY GRENADES
Natural Sound
Four rocket-propelled grenades have struck the Russian embassy in Beirut - killing one Lebanese police officer and wounding six.
Police guarding the embassy returned fire towards the compound at the busy Corniche thoroughfare, killing one of the assailants.
The perpetrators of Monday's midday attack have not yet been identified.
Within minutes of the attack, policemen from the nearby Helou Barracks ran into the streets around the embassy.
They returned a barrage of fire at the unknown assailants firing from a nearby building inside the embassy grounds.
Some gunmen had apparently taken up positions inside the embassy compound in Mazraa, Beirut's Muslim quarter.
The surrounding streets were immediately cleared of traffic and ambulances with sirens wailing sped toward the embassy.
Lebanese police and army took cover behind cars and armoured vehicles as they approached the building where the assailants were seen firing from.
Troops carrying assault rifles ordered people indoors as they secured the area.
Shopkeepers shuttered their stores and evacuated while police and army forces searched for the attackers.
The cordon was lifted about two hours later.
A Russian diplomat said there were no Russian casualties in the assault.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, but it may be related to Russia's war against Muslim rebels in Chechnya.
Lebanese militants opposed to Russia's military campaign against fellow Muslims in the Caucasus have staged protests against Moscow and have been raising money for the beleaguered Chechens.
The leaders of the rebel republic demanded independence when the Soviet Union split apart in 1991, but Moscow refused to let the territory secede.
When the Russian troops withdrew at the end of the 1994-96 war, Chechnya had de-facto independence, though neither Russia nor any other country recognised the claim.
Russian troops re-entered Chechnya in September of 1999 after Chechen-based militants invaded a neighbouring region and were blamed for several bombings elsewhere in Russia.
Russians alarmed by kidnappings and other violence that have plagued the Caucasus region in recent years largely support the war.

Russia: US Embassy employee injured in Moscow blast
At least one person was reportedly injured in a blast resulting in fire engulfing apartments on two floors at a residential block in central Moscow. The injured is a confirmed US embassy employee who was sent to the nearest hospital via Emergency Ministry helicopter.
Initial reports say that witnesses heard a loud explosion that shattered windows and brought down the ceiling between the third and fourth floors of a building on Kutuzovsky Prospekt.
Fire-fighters managed to contain the blaze before it spread further than the fourth floor of the eight-storey building.

MOSCOW : GRENADE ATTACK ON US EMBASSY
Eng/Russian/Nat
Attackers fired a rocket-propelled grenade at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow Wednesday, shattering glass and spraying the street with shrapnel.
Although the attack comes at a time of strained relations between the United States and Russia over the NATO bombing campaign against the Bosnian Serbs early reports suggest the strike was the work of a lone madman.
The 10-storey U-S Embassy in Moscow was the site of Wednesday afternoon's attack.
The side of the building was scorched by the grenade which was stopped by a large photocopy machine behind the thick walls.
Ambassador Thomas Pickering was in Washington at the time of the attack.
No one was injured in the attack.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Q: Was it the Serbs?
I have absolutely no speculation on that. We have no information.
Q: When will you have information?
We have no idea. If someone intends to call in then we'll receive the call, but I have no way of telling when something like that may happen.
Q: Have there been any threats today?
There have been no threats like that - no. There were no threats today, no advance calls, no.
SUPERCAPTION: Dick Hoagland, US Embassy Press Attache.
Everyone except essential people were evacuated from the embassy, although a modern annex behind the main building remained open.
Russian news reports said the grenade was fired from a passing car.
SOUNDBITE :(Russian)
All we know is that a shot was fired at the Embassy from a grenade launcher.
SUPERCAPTION: Special Forces Officer.
One of Moscow's top-ranking Russian policeman explained that the grenade was not designed to damage buildings such as the embassy.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
Most likely it was an antitank grenade. There was not much of a hole because they cumulative affect on armour rather than buildings
SUPERCAPTION: Col Chiradze, commander of Moscow Civil Defence
Anti-U-S sentiment in Russia has increased as a result of NATO
air strikes against the Bosnian Serbs. The Russians and the Serbs are traditional allies.
Even so, a Russian security official says the attack was the work of a lone maniac.

RUSSIA: MOSCOW: REACTION TO EMBASSY GRENADE ATTACK
Russian/Eng/Nat
The Kremlin has expressed grave concerns after a grenade attack on the Russian embassy in Beirut left a police guard dead.
But Dmitry Yakushkin, previously Boris Yeltsin's spokesman and now deputy chief of administration, refused to speculate on whether the attack was linked to the war in Chechnya.
Although no Russians were hurt in the attack and damage was minimal, Russia sees the attack on its embassy in Beirut as a dangerous event.
Moscow is worried about possible further attacks on its representatives and offices abroad.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
As for the embassy attack in Beirut, we want to state that we condemn every act of a terrorism, but I shall withhold a reaction on this attack while investigation is still in process. SUPER CAPTION: Dmitry Yakushkin, Russian deputy chief of administration
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, but media reports cited a document found on the dead attacker that said it was a protest of Russia's military offensive against Muslim rebels in Chechnya.
The reports did not identify their source.
Lebanese Muslim militants opposed to the military campaign in the Caucasus have staged protests against Moscow and have been raising money for the Chechens.
