Sutton Valence Castle an English Heritage Site
Sutton Valence castle was owned by a long succession of important medieval lords.
The castle being located in a strong position, overlooked the road from Maidstone to Winchelsea, and dominating the Weald of Kent.
Having passed down through various marriages, in 1238 the castle was owned by Simon de Montfort, the sixth Earl of Leicester.
As leader of the baronial rebellion against Henry III, he was killed at the Battle of Evesham in 1265, and his estates were confiscated by the Crown.
Henry III then conferred the castle on his half-brother, William de Valence, as a reward for his support during the rebellion. The village of Sutton, or 'south town', became known as Sutton Valence.
The stone keep is all that remains of a strongly defended castle, which occupied the entire spur of the hillside in medieval times.
Ruined sections of a curtain wall and an additional tower, visible until the early 20th century, suggest that the castle occupied a much larger area than today.
A bailey probably lay beyond the keep, containing buildings such as the hall, chapel and kitchen.
The great tower, probably built around 1200, was at least three storeys high.
The ground floor was most likely used as a storeroom, and external stone stairs led to the main entrance on the first floor.
Sutton Valence Castle
Sutton Valence Castle is a ruined medieval fortification in the village of Sutton Valence in Kent, England. It was built in the second half of the 12th century, probably by Baldwin of Bethune, the Count of Aumale. Overlooking a strategic route to the coast, the original castle probably comprised an inner and an outer bailey and a protective barbican, with a three-storey high keep on its southern side. It was passed into the Marshal and de Montfort families, before being given by King Henry III to his half-brother William de Valence in 1265, from whom the castle takes its current name. It was abandoned in the early 14th century and fell into ruin. In the 21st century the castle is managed by English Heritage, and the remains of the keep are open to the public.

Sutton Valence Castle, Kent
Here I take a look around the mid 12th century Norman Keep probably built by The Count of Aumale, Baldwin de Bethune. The castle was used as a residence for over 150 years by a succession of lords & earls. This included Simon de Montfort, sixth Earl of Leicester who was killed in 1265 at the Battle of Evesham and King Henry III conferred the castle on his half-brother, William de Valence. William's son, Aymer de Valence inherited the castle in 1307. However little is known of the castle's history after this time.
Today we see the remains of the great tower that once formed part of a much larger castle, which probably included an inner & outer bailey. The tower was believed to date from 1200 and was at least three storeys high.
Thurnham Castle
It is a 12th-century flint-built castle constructed by Robert de Thurnham in the reign of Henry II on a hill on the edge of the North Downs. One side of the bailey wall still stands 10 foot high and originally it enclosed an area of about a quarter of an acre. There is no visible stonework on the large motte.
The site has been acquired by Kent County Council and included in the White Horse Millennium Wood and Country Park Project. Much of the site has been cleared of undergrowth and public access has been provided.

Thurnham Castle Ruins in Maidstone Kent
Not a great deal is known about the history of Thurnham Castle.
An estimate has been made that it originally dates back to the late 11th century.
Thurnham Castle is situated to the north of Thurnham village with the castle entrance located at the top of Castle Hill.
Remains of the Curtain wall are still standing along with two square tower bases, one to the North west side and the other half way along the west curtain wall.
The position of Thurnham Castle gives it an elevated advantage on the edge of the North Downs, as it overlooks literally everything into the horizon.
Thurnham is one of three earthwork castles in the area, along with Detling & Stockbury Castle.
Thurnham Castle is an interesting place to see if you are visiting the area.
