Plans have emerged to transform a 1980s pyramid built in the middle of the Albanian capital, Tirana, into an IT hub. It was built as a museum to dictator Enver Hoxha, and has since served as a Nato base, TV studio, and night club, but it now stands abandoned and crumbling.

In Tirana, the monument was erected in 1988 in honour of the Albanian dictator Enver Hoxha. Now, it's an empty mausoleum. After the fall of the regime, the statues were broken, and the building looted.

A pyramid in the middle of the Albanian capital of Tirana stands in memory of the former dictator, Enver Hoxha. Now the government is preparing to tear it down. Around 6000 Albanians, including those once imprisoned by Hoxha, are petitioning against the memorial's destruction.

For almost 50 years, Albania was so hermetically sealed under the Communist dictatorship of Enver Hoxha that it was named the “little North Korea” of Europe. Between 1945 and 1991, at least 6,000 people are believed to have been executed and nearly 100,000 Albanians were interned in Gulag-style labour camps. Today, nearly 30 years on, Albania and its capital Tirana are gradually emerging from their isolation, but victims of the dictatorship are still demanding justice. FRANCE 24’s Juliette Lacharnay and Cécile Khindria report.

Climbing up and down the abandoned pyramid building in the middle of Tirana, Albania.

The Pyramid of Tirana (Albanian: Piramida) is a structure and former museum located in Tirana, the capital of Albania.
On 14 October 1988, the structure opened as the Enver Hoxha Museum, originally serving as a museum about the legacy of Enver Hoxha, the long-time leader of Communist Albania, who had died three years earlier. The structure was co-designed by Hoxha's daughter Pranvera Hoxha, an architect, and her husband Klement Kolaneci, along with Pirro Vaso and Vladimir Bregu.

When built, the Pyramid was said to be the most expensive individual structure ever constructed in Albania.

The Pyramid has sometimes been sardonically called the Enver Hoxha Mausoleum, although this was never its intended use or official appellation.

ALBANIA: 13TH DAY OF PROTESTS OVER PYRAMID INVESTMENT SCHEME

Protests continued for the 13th day running in the southern Albanian town of Vlora, over the failure of the pyramid investment schemes.

Two thousand demonstrators demanded the resignation of the Mayor of Vlora for his part in the financial crisis.

In the capital Tirana, Albanians queued outside the Greek Embassy hopeful of visas to escape the ills of their country.

Relentless Albanians took to the streets of Vlora for the 13th day running, demanding the resignation of Mayor Gezim Zilja.

The angry protesters are trying to shake up Albania's governing Democratic Party which they blame for the collapsing investment schemes which precipitated a national crisis - both economic and political.

The two-thousand strong demonstrators are hopeful that the resignation of the Mayor of Vlora will trigger a wave of resignations by other officials of the governing party.

Nearly one (m) million Albanians lost money they had invested in high-risk funds. For many it meant they lost their life savings.

In Tirana, locals took to the streets in a different way.

Tired of being governed by an incompetent government, they sought a new life in Greece, as they queued up for visas.

Tensions were evident as an elderly Albanian pleaded with a policeman for entry into the embassy.

A man was dragged away by police as people desperate for visas started pushing for places in the line outside the embassy.

Times are hard for Albanians. While some choose to fight the government on the streets, for others the struggle is too much as they yearn a new life abroad.
