Emission off-setted Harley Owners Group Tour of Sri Lanka 2014 Powered by JLanka
On Friday, August 08, 2014, for the FIRST time in the history of the exclusive worldwide Harley Owners Group® (HOG®), a greenhouse gas (GHG) emission-free Harley bike tour began in Sri Lanka. This historic event was powered by JLanka Technologies – a leading solar energy solutions provider in the country.
This GHG-free tour was achieved by offsetting the emissions of the riding component of the tour through an internal mechanism. The assessments were carried out by an independent sustainability solutions expert – The Carbon Consulting Company (CCC), where they calculated the GHGs that will be emitted from 14 Harley bikes, each traveling an estimated distance of 2000km, as well as the GHG savings of a selected solar power client of JLanka Technologies. Thereby, CCC were able to confirm that the GHG emissions of the 14 bikes traveling on this HOG® Sri Lankan tour have been internally set off by way of GHG emissions prevented through the use of solar energy.

Reunited to Protect Sri lanka Beach
Nalaka Senadeera's Life
Beach cleanup – around Sri Lanka in 7 days
The beach cleanup programme conducted by 365X in collaboration with Nalaka Senadeera will be held from tomorrow, 3 December, till 9 December, 2018.
Nalaka Senadeera is an environmental activist dedicated to minimising littering; enhancing recycling methodologies, and spreading green love around the island, whereas 365X is a start-up working in the development and enhancement of the scalability of system software.
Conducted by 365X as a CSR project, it is a laudable initiative. The mass beach cleaning campaign will be carried out around the island including in Negombo, Jaffna, Matara, and Mount Lavinia.
Sponsored by CodeGen, this is the first time an islandwide beach cleaning camp is being conducted in Sri Lanka. Besides the main organisers, certain communities in Negombo and Kalpitiya are joining in to support; the Chunnkam Rotaract Club will be supporting the cleanup camp in Jaffna, the Rotaract Club of SLIIT Malabe will be supporting the Mount Lavinia cleaning camp.
The first destination of the tour will be Negombo, after which the teams will head to Kalpitiya on the morning of 4 December, Jaffna the next morning, Pasikuda on 6 December, Arugam Bay on 7 December morning, Matara on 8 December morning, and Hikkaduwa that same evening, Beruwala on the morning of 9 December, and finally Mount Lavinia that evening.
Speaking about the vision of this wonderful initiative, Ranuka from 365X said: “We have watched Nalaka do a great deal of work to preserve the environment and we decided to support this time.”
He further added: “We were at Jungle Beach last year and saw that it was filled with plastic. We have a beautiful country and we have to protect and preserve our environment for ourselves and our future generations.
“We do see that the beaches are getting cleaned due to tourism and whatnot; however there are several beautiful beach stretches that are often overlooked, so we are trying to include those beaches that are often left idle, to help create a more beautiful Sri Lanka.”
The campaigning for this event is completely done through social media, and the time and locations of each camp will be updated throughout the tour.
One reason for tourists to be interested in Sri Lanka as a tropical country is, that it owns a number of beautiful, clear blue beaches, and they are ideal spots especially for sports such as water surfing. Whale watching in Mirissa is one great experience one can get while in Sri Lanka, and to watch stilt fishing down South is another chance one may rarely see in another country. Sunbathing in the golden coast of Sri Lanka is a divine pleasure which any tourist will enjoy while being here. They are the natural resources which also contribute in bringing financial benefits to the country.
But due to various development projects, the growing population and the chemicals used for different purposes, the ocean surrounding Sri Lanka has been sadly polluted. This threat is increasing day by day. Many indisposable items are being collected each day through streams and lakes to the sea and beaches. Therefore there is a threat of the tourism industry being affected, including the fishing areas.
Individuals joining the tour will be provided transport and accommodation.
Sri Lanka 2048: Fish and fisheries management
Sri Lanka is surrounded by a vast ocean. But we don't catch enough fish to feed our people. To make matters worse, marine fish stocks are falling worldwide. Why don't we grow more fish inland? What more needs to be done to improve fish stocks and the lives of fishermen? Can fisheries be sustainable?
This is one of 10 TV debates broadcast in mid 2008 in the 'Sri Lanka 2048' series, co-produced by TVE Asia Pacific and MTV Channel (Private) Limited, in partnership with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and sponsored by the Government of the Netherlands. Thunnus Thynnus
In the European Union, Thunnus Thynnus is subjected to a protection system, which consists principally in a capture shares for every country that can't be surpassed.
This kind of tunny in May and June goes into Mediterranean sea to spawn, reaching the reproductive maturity about at 2/4 years. The exploitation far perpetrated against the Thunnus Thynnus Kind, which was plundered by the human kind, which for years has fished also juveniles fishes that they aren't able to spawn, has put in danger the fish kind.
Unfortunately for the Thunnus Thynnus the economic interests about esteemed meat are enourmous, he's considered a deliciousness in Japan, where he's used to prepare sashimi. His fishing. Despite the regulation, is often illegal; fishers do often irregularity until they can have a slice of profit.
The bigger users of this kind are Japanese who buy about the 80% of the fished to very high price.
Because of these elements the Thunnus Thynnus kind is drastically reduced putting it at serious risk and including it in the GreenPeace's red list. Moreover the reduction of the Mediterrean species, with the raising of the temperature, contributed to the increase in jellyfishes, whose Thunnus Thynnus is a predator of these. Speaking in environmental terms, this is a damage; the increase of jellyfish generally causes an imbalance in the natural food chain touching others kinds such as corals and clownfish.

The afternoon ride is flanked by the stunning Kalanduwa hills on one side and the borders of Wasgomuwa Wildlife Park on the other. As the jungle gives way to plantations, we enter the spice growing region of Sri Lanka. The night is spent in a family-run guest house with small cabanas dotted around the estate, it's basic but the home cooking in clay pots on wood fired stoves gives you the real flavour of Sri Lanka. If you would like to find out more about the spices used in the piquant Lankan currys, the owners can arrange a visit to one of the renowned spice gardens a short walk down the road.
