Barra is an island in the Outer Hebrides,Scotland, and the second southernmost inhabited island there, after the adjacent island of Vatersay to which it is connected by a short causeway. In 2011, the population was 1,174. The area of Barra is roughly 60 square kilometres (23 sq mi), 11 miles long and 6 miles wide. The main village is Castlebay (Bàgh a' Chaisteil). A single track road runs around the coast of the island where the flattest land and houses are, the interior of the island is hilly and uninhabited.
The west of the island has white sandy beaches backed by shell-sand, machair and the east has numerous rocky inlets. Kisimul Castle at Castlebay is on a rock in the bay, giving the village its name. A smaller medieval tower house, Dun Mhic Leoid, can be found in the middle of Loch St Clare on the west side of the island at Tangasdale. The highest elevation on the island is Heaval, halfway up which is a prominent white marble statue of the Madonna and Child, called Our Lady of the Sea, which was erected during the Marian year of 1954. The predominant faith on the island is Catholicism and the Catholic church dedicated to Our Lady of the Sea is immediately apparent to all who arrive at Castlebay.
Other places of interest on the island include a ruined church and museum at Cille Bharra, a number of Iron Age brochs such as those at Dùn Chuidhir and An Dùn Bàn, and a range of other Iron Age and later structures which have recently been excavated and recorded. Barra is connected by a causeway to the smaller island of Vatersay, population 90.
Barra's tiny airport, near Northbay, uses the beach called An Tràigh Mhòr (The Great Beach) as a runway. Planes can land and take off only at low tide, so the timetable varies. Voted the world's most stunning landing spot, Barra's airport is claimed to be the only airport in the world to have scheduled flights landing on a beach.
Ferries to Oban, Lochboisdale, Tiree and Eriskay are run by Caledonian MacBrayne. Castlebay is the main port from which ferries sail to Oban on the Scottish mainland, Tiree and Lochboisdale (Loch Baghasdail) in South Uist. The mainland crossing takes about 5 hours. A vehicular ferry travels between Ardmore (An Àird Mhòr) and Ceann a' Gharaidh in Eriskay (Èirisgeigh). The crossing takes around 40 minutes.
The fish factory, Barratlantic, in Northbay is a major contributor to the island's economy and the Hebridean Toffee Factory in Castlebay is one of the few manufacturers on Barra. Tourism provides the main income for the majority of islanders; the high season lasts from May to September. Thousands of people visit the island every year, the busiest times being during Fèis Bharraigh & BarraFest in July. The Dualchas Heritage and Cultural Centre is located in Castlebay, next to Castlebay Community School. It has various exhibitions each year, and is open throughout the year.

MISS GREAT BRITAIN CONTEST - 31/08/1969
Morecambe, Lancashire.
Various shots of pretty, sun-tanned girls in swimsuits parading before judges at the 25th Miss Great Britain beauty contest. Although it looks sunny and bright, there seems to be a gale blowing, and some of the girls are nearly blown off their white high heels! The judges (not seen clearly but including singer Freddie Garrity and Moira Anderson) sit wrapped up against the bitter cold.
Good footage of late 60s glamour girls and colourful 1960s swimsuits. Wendy George of Derby is declared the winner. A woman puts the sash on Wendy who starts to weep with joy. She composes herself and poses with her trophy cup. Commentator says The girl who thought she was too chubby to stand a chance won for herself £2,000, a £500 watch and a tour of Britain. Please, Wendy, don't diet!
Cataloguer's note: interesting that although it was fashionable to look like Twiggy in the late 60s, these gals are very curvy. I suppose fashion cannot dictate to beauty contests, especially in the bosom department!

Eriskay Ferry Terminal
Located in the South UIST - the Eriskay has a small unmanned Ferry port. The port connects you to last island of Hebrides(BARRA). It is an amazing experience to see the nature in sunny shades.

Barra's beaches and wild camping on South Uist | Touring the Outer Hebrides 2017
First full day of the tour! from Vatersay across the causeway to Barra. It was a beautiful sunny (WINDY AF) day, we got onto Eriskay then before we knew it were onto South Uist. It was pretty flat and shite cycling but we found a decent spot to camp far from houses and sheltered by the wind. NICE

In samenwerking met Schotland specialist Kaipara Reizen heb ik in mei 2016 een fotoreis verzorgd naar de ruige Outer Hebrides, gelegen boven de meest noord-westelijk kust van het Schotse Isle of Skye.
Het contrast tussen de woeste kusten, de desolate landschappen en de tropische stranden is groot, en na iedere bocht duikt er weer een nieuw en uitgestrekt panorama op.
We hebben genoten van de landschappen, de stranden, de natuur met de Jan van Genten, de Aalscholvers, de steenformaties, de gezellige pubs en goed gezelschap!
Deze korte film bestaat uit foto's, film en time lapse.
In september 2016 staat de volgende fotoreis naar Schotland gepland, ditmaal naar Isle of Skye in herfstkleuren.

Join me on an adventure around the Outer Hebrides Isles in Scotland. Situated on Europe’s Atlantic edge, the Scottish Western Isles of the Outer Hebrides are a diverse chain of inter-connected islands with their own unique way of life.

Travelling around the Outer Hebrides in a converted Land Rover Defender 110. In this video are a selection of the numerous beaches found on the tip of North Uist. Living and sleeping in the back of the vehicle we also visited the following places across the Uists and Harris & Lewis: Loch Boisdale, Eriskay, Howmore, Dalabrog, Benbecula, Berneray, Rodel, Northton, Tarbert, Huisinis, Losgaintir, Calanais, Carloway, Siabost, Traigh Mhor and Stornoway.
