MAY 22, 2016—Coming back from Dicasalarin Cove and Diguisit Bay during of Day Tour of Baler we passed by the historic Ermita Hill. Ermita Hill memorializes modern Baler's beginning rooted on a disaster of apocalyptic proportions. In 1735 a huge tsunami (tromba marina) wiped out the whole town of Baler killing almost all of its inhabitants save a few families who were able to escape to safety by climbing up the slopes on to the top of Ermita Hills.

Tragic Tsunami Refuge - Ermita Hill, Baler | VLOG 48
Long before a catastrophic event occurred in Baler, it was in the early morning of December 1735 that the town was engulfed by a tsunami or better known in the early years of the Spanish Missionaries as the ‘tromba marina’. Mysteriously, the only impacted area was the municipality of Baler.
A missionary who was then on a vacation in Baler and a few accounted families survived the torrent by swimming to the nearby hill known in this day and age as the Ermita Hill. The statues depict the seven families who managed to cling to life and rebuild the civilization in the aftermath of cataclysm.
Then and now there is no rest from adapting to a life in the Pacific Ring of Fire and the alleyway of typhoons, the Philippines will never be disaster-proof as the experts say. Yet those who get a glimpse of this collage of colors on the Philippine palette would gush in astonishment at how resilient the Filipinos are!

Ermita Hills is part of the 196.6 hectares of land situated in Mt. Dibudalan at Sitio Dicaloyungan, Barangay Zabali, Baler, Aurora which was declared as the Aurora State College of Technology (ASCOT) School Site Civil Reservation. It has a plateau covering an area of two (2) hectares and is approximately 40 meters above sea-level. It provides a magnificent view of Baler Bay, Dima-Dimalangat and Aniao Islets. Historical and Cultural Value-- Ermita Hills plays an important part in the history of Baler. BALER AURORA | SABANG BEACH, MOTHER FALLS, ERMITA HILL
Last August my friends and I decided to spend the long weekend in Baler, Aurora - a popular destination for surfers about 5 hours away from Metro Manila.
Having never visited before, I made sure we book a guided tour (Kuya Wendell) to take us all around the province.
Our first stop was famous Mother Falls which had us trekking for about half an hour. The view was breathtaking and the water was as refreshing and as rewarding as you would imagine it to be.
After our visit to Mother Falls, Kuya Wendell drove us to see the Millenium Tree (the oldest Balete tree in Asia). We were even able to go inside and hang around the branches which I thought was pretty neat (there were cameras inside it, too).
The next stop was Ermita Hill which had a spectacular view! I would recommend going here to watch the sunset over Sabang Beach.
Our last stop with Kuya Wendell was the Hanging Bridge which was the closest attraction to Sabang Beach (where we were staying). Not much to do but it's another must see if ever you find yourself in the province.
We spent the rest of the weekend hanging out with our friends - eating, swimming, and eating some more. :)
Definitely had so much fun and I'll make it a point to try to visit other beaches next year!
