1978 Election of Ernest Dutch Morial, New Orleans's First Black Mayor
Raphael Cassimere, Jr., is a civil rights activist and historian. He is professor emeritus of the history department of the University of New Orleans. Cassimere is the author of African Americans in New Orleans Before the Civil War. Dr. Cassimere has been active in the NAACP since 1960 and held several offices: president, New Orleans NAACP Youth Council, 1960-1966; president, Louisiana State Youth Conference, 1962-65; chair, Southwest Regional States, for both adult and youth conferences, and in 2007, he was elected to an unprecedented ninth term as regional chairman. He served as vice president of the Louisiana State Conference, NAACP from 1971-1982 and secretary of the New Orleans branch of the NAACP, 1979-82. From 1992-96, Cassimere served on the board of directors of the Crisis Publishing Company, the official journal of the national NAACP and interim chair of the Crisis Board in 1996. In 1982, Dr. Cassimere received the A.P. Tureaud Black Citizenship Medal, the highest award conferred by the NAACP in Louisiana. In 1971, Gov. John J. McKeithen appointed Dr. Cassimere to the Louisiana Advisory Bicentennial Commission. In 1975, Gov. Edwin W. Edwards appointed him to the Louisiana Election Code Revision Commission, responsible for revising the election laws of Louisiana. He was subsequently elected secretary of the commission. In 1984, Governor Edwards named him one of the original members of the Louisiana Black Culture Commission. In 1982, Mayor Ernest N. Morial appointed Cassimere to the Vieux Carre Commission; he served as chair from 1983–85. Dr. Cassimere attended McCarty Elementary, A.J. Bell Jr. High, and Joseph S. Clark Senior High public schools in New Orleans. Cassimere received his BA and MA in history from LSUNO (now the University of New Orleans). In 1971, he received his PhD from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

WLOX Memories New Orleans Worlds Fair and Expo 1984
This week marks the 30th anniversary of the grand opening of the 1984 Louisiana World's Fair and Exposition.
Although the fair is mostly remembered today for having been a financial disaster that ended in bankruptcy, it was at the time an exciting endeavor that was greeted with great enthusiasm. The fair featured a monorail, a spectacular gondola ride over the Mississippi River, a real space shuttle from NASA's fleet and at least two permanent buildings that eventually became The Riverwalk Shopping Center and a portion of the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.
