Escape from Sickness @ Sankt Gallen
Macbeth Fast Forward Tour in St. Gallen
When Switzerland opened its arms to POWs
One town has been marking the time 100 years ago when Switzerland welcomed tens of thousands of prisoners of war. Revisiting the place has been an emotional experience for some of their descendants.
Based on agreements with the belligerent nations, who paid the costs, 68000 sick and wounded British, French, German, Belgian, Canadian and Indian prisoners were interned for several months in sanatoria and hotels.
These were mainly located in Alpine tourist resorts, thus supporting an industry lying idle due to the great war. The programme underlined the usefulness of the Swiss neutrality policy.
One of the main centres for interned British was Châteux d’Oex in south-western Switzerland. Seven hundred sick and wounded British POWs arrived there at the end of May 1916.
The town has been marking the centenary with events attended by relatives of the internees. swissinfo.ch spoke to them.

Worlds Greatest Hotels Ep11: The Kameha Grand, Zurich, Switzerland
With gigantic cow bells suspended in the gleaming white lobby, themed suites with poker tables and astronaughts, doors like bars of chocolate and door handles that resemble safes, Kameha Grand Zurich is pushing the boundaries of modern contemporism. With 245 rooms which include a number of signature suites it’s ideally located a tram ride from Zurich International airport, which only costs a couple of francs.
The Kameha Grand has been constructed in the vibrant business district of Glattpark, where a new area has been made close to the airport, around five minutes by car in actual fact. There are a number of new restaurants, cafes and shops which have opened up to service the businesses in the area and with the city centre only five miles away (easily accessed by tram from just outside the hotel) the hotel is proving immensely popular with international travellers and locals alike.
Kameha Grand is part of the Marriot Hotel chain Autograph Collection, and is the group's first hotel in Switzerland. The hotel definitely lives up to the “exactly like nothing else” mantra it projects.
Designed by Sebastian Knorr of tecArchitecture and dressed by flamboyant interior designer Marcel Wanders its big and its very bold! Aiming to be ‘your new lieblingsplatz’ that’s Swiss for favourite place, staff really go out of their way to be helpful. There is a well-equipped gym and a spa with sauna, steam bath and relaxation beds on the roof terrace. There is an oriental-inspired shisha lounge and a smoking room, in classic gentleman’s club style. The Puregold Bar also has handy device-charging stations for all your madgets, that’s man gadgets for the uninitiated!
Within the 245 rooms, there are six Business Suites with conference tables; 11 themed suites, from a Workout Suite equipped with treadmill, mini ping-pong and weights, to a Poker Face suite, complete with your very own poker table.
The King Kameha Suite, a massive 1453 square feet with some signature Wanders-designed furniture, is on the fifth floor. The Space Suite, my personal favourite, designed by artist Michael Najjar, immerses you in outer space with a floating bed, moon landings playing on screens and crater-like ceilings. Bathrooms are sleek and minimal with free-standing white baths on black tiled floors, separate showers, and round his-and-hers basins all dressed up with Molton Brown toiletries.
The Kameha Grand restaurant LUnico has a modern, cosy atmosphere. The serving team are first class and the food is excellent. Traditional Italian cuisine, interpreted in a creative way, the restaurant offers a wide variety of homemade pasta that is complemented by delicate sauces. They have their own pasta production and the fresh preparation of the meals at the live-cooking-station makes it a unique experience, hence the name I suppose. There’s a decent wine list which has some well-known wines as well as insiders’ tips from the region and the rest of the world, quite a nice touch if you are not wine savvy.
Puregold Bar is open all day and really comes into its own as a party place in the evening, with a resident DJ and some classic cocktails, it’s a really cool place to hang out with the Zurich trendy set.
Double rooms start from 199 Swiss Francs (£143) in low season; rising to 289 Swiss Francs (£208) in high season. Breakfast is excluded and priced at 39 Swiss Francs (£28). There is Free Wi-Fi throughout the building.

Developing new ideas with Design Thinking - dormakaba Innovation Stories - Expert Interview Part 2
Interview with Professor Andreas Peter, study program director Corporate Innovation Management at FHS St. Gallen University of Applied Sciences (Switzerland)
“#Innovation” for most companies mostly means inventing or improving products and solutions. However, when taking a step back, the interesting question is why innovations should be developed, to begin with – and why this question plays an integral part of companies’ strategic considerations.
Due to the increased #digitization and exponential economic development, innovation management becomes more and more challenging. One method to meet these challenges is the so-called “design-oriented innovation development”, including the #DesignThinking methodology.
Davos Open Forum 2010 - Switzerland: Misfit or Model?
28.01.2010
Switzerland has been criticized lately: On the one hand, Switzerland's direct democracy is a showpiece; on the other hand, it unleashes worldwide consternation. International pressures on bank secrecy lead to concessions in the exchange of fiscal information. The accusation of cherry-picking comes up regularly.
Does Switzerland have to fear for its reputation and economy?
Did Switzerland react accordingly to the international pressure on tax issues?
What consequences will this have on Swiss diplomacy and its role as a mediator in international conflicts?
This session is co-organized with the Federation of Swiss Protestant Churches (SEK-FEPS).
