Car Camera - Lincoln, NE - NE 2: U.S. 77 to Bennet Interchanges . 2013 ( ネブラスカ州リンカーン )
Ah, what can be said about today's road trip??? It's been a long time coming. A major trucking artery between Interstate 80 and Kansas City (I-29), Nebraska Highway 2 has been in long need of a bypass around south Lincoln, Nebraska, U.S.A... a.k.a. South Beltway - which has been over 10 years in the making and will take over another 10.
Ah well, what am I saying, the truck traffic isn't all that bad today anyways ;p . Any-ways, Hwy. 2 is what it is. Rush hour is a real drag! There really isn't another road in Lincoln that goes from Downtown to SE Lincoln, besides Capital Parkway/Normal Boulevard, but that road stops at S. 70th St. The city is planning a six-lane expansion of some sections of Hwy. 2 here in Lincoln at some point, but that will be in a few years over a period of years and how much is contingent on the South Beltway being built. Concrete is so expensive now-a-days :p !
...but besides all of that stuff, I hit today on a solid white late fall day with snow on the ground ^_^ (what a difference a weekend makes :p ). Luckily the roads aren't too slushy yet because of the super cold temperatures we're having. Nebraska, gott'a love the weather! Like they say here, You don't like the weather? Wait ten minutes. ^_~
One note to make... in the past, we've been on a section or two of Hwy. 2 in other videos, but in the other direction. It's hard to miss 2 when going into south Lincoln ^_~ .
So, please enjoy the ride and the white ^^ !
The eastern half of NE Hwy. 2 in Nebraska is now complete video-wise except for a very small segment from U.S. Hwy. 75 into Iowa at Nebraska City. Woo-hoo!

American History - Part 086 - Buchanan - Rebellion at Harper Ferry fails
In October of 1859, a group of anti-slavery extremists attacked the town of Harpers Ferry. Harpers Ferry was part of Virginia then; today it is located in West Virginia. The attackers were led by John Brown. They seized a gun factory and a federal supply center where military equipment was kept. They planned to use the guns and equipment to organize a rebel army of slaves.
The president of the United States in 1859 was James Buchanan. When Buchanan learned of the attack, he wanted immediate action. He sent a force of Marines to Harpers Ferry, under the command of Army Colonel Robert E. Lee.
John Brown had attacked with about twenty men. Several, including two of his sons, had been killed by local militia. He and his remaining men withdrew to a small brick building. The attack had failed. Not one slave had come to Harpers Ferry to help Brown.
Brown and his men were trapped inside the brick building. They held a few hostages whom they hoped to exchange for their freedom.
Colonel Lee wrote a message to John Brown demanding his surrender. He did not think Brown would surrender peaceably. So, he planned to attack as soon as Brown rejected the message. He felt this was the surest way to save the lives of the hostages.
As expected, Brown refused to surrender. He said he and his men had the right to go free. As soon as Brown spoke, the signal was given. The Marines attacked.
They broke open a small hole in the door of the brick building. One by one, the Marines moved through the hole. They fought hand-to-hand against the men inside. After a brief fight, they won. John Brown's rebellion was crushed.
Then the officials asked why Brown had come to Harpers Ferry. We came to free the slaves, Brown said, and only that.
He c I think that you are guilty of a great wrong against God and humanity. I believe anyone would be perfectly right to interfere with you, so far as to free those you wickedly hold in slavery. I think I did right. You had better -- all you people of the South -- prepare yourselves for a settlement sooner than you are prepared for it.
You may get rid of me very easily. I am nearly gone now. But this question is still to be settled -- this Negro question, I mean. That is not yet ended.
New measures were approved throughout the South to prevent this. Military law was declared in some areas. Slave owners threatened to beat or hang any Negro who even looked rebellious.
The fear of a slave rebellion united the people of the South. For years, rich slave owners had talked of taking the southern states out of the Union to save their way of life. But those who had no slaves opposed the idea of disunion.
John Brown's raid changed that. After his attack on Harpers Ferry, the south spoke with one voice. All southerners declared that they would fight to protect their homes from a Negro rebellion or from another attack by men like Brown. The Governor of Virginia decided to try Brown in a state court. He believed a federal court trial would take too long. If Brown were not brought to trial quickly, he said, people might attack the jail and kill him.
The trial lasted five days. The jury found John Brown guilty of all three charges.
The judge asked Brown if he wanted to make a statement before being sentenced. Brown did. He declared that he had not planned to start a slave rebellion. He said he only wanted to free some slaves and take them to Canada.
Brown's statement was strong. But it was not true. He had, in fact, planned to organize an army of slaves to fight for their freedom. He acted in the belief that slaves throughout the south would rise up against their owners and join him.
Brown's words did not move the judge. He said he could find no reason to question the jury's decision that Brown was guilty. He sentenced Brown to be hanged.
One of Brown's supporters attempted to find a way to free Brown from jail. Several plans were proposed. None were tried.
Brown himself did not want to escape. He said he could do more to destroy slavery by hanging than by staying alive.
John Brown was executed on December second, 1859. His death created a wave of public emotion throughout the country. In the North, people mourned.
One man The events of the last month or two have done more to build northern opposition to slavery than anything which has ever happened before, than all the anti-slavery pamphlets and books that have ever been written.
In the south, people cheered. But their happiness at Brown's punishment was mixed with anger at those who honored him. As the nation prepared for a presidential election year, the South renewed its promise to defend slavery -- or leave the Union.

Slavery - Crash Course US History #13
In which John Green teaches you about America's peculiar institution, slavery. I wouldn't really call it peculiar. I'd lean more toward horrifying and depressing institution, but nobody asked me. John will talk about what life was like for a slave in the 19th century United States, and how slaves resisted oppression, to the degree that was possible. We'll hear about cotton plantations, violent punishment of slaves, day to day slave life, and slave rebellions. Nat Turner, Harriet Tubman, and Whipped Peter all make an appearance. Slavery as an institution is arguably the darkest part of America's history, and we're still dealing with its aftermath 150 years after it ended. Support CrashCourse on Patreon:

Ultimately, Sandburg rose to the highest literary circles of his day—and yet he was able to come to terms with his father’s tradesman persona and view him as a man “superior to books.” So he says in this absorbing 1958 interview. The conversation, steered by the network’s Director of Public Affairs Service Programs, Edward Stanley, encompasses early political experiences from Sandburg’s childhood; his college years and subsequent hobo wanderlust; his attempt to discover a basic definition of poetry; and detailed discussions centered on his Lincoln series. Sandburg also reads his poem “Phizzog” and performs folk songs.

Inside Juvenile Detention
As recently as 2005, the state of Virginia had eight centers like Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Facility, housing more than 1,300 delinquent youth. But by 2017, after a series of reforms, that number had shrunk to one.
“It's not that you can't do good work here,” said Andy Block, who, since 2014, has served as the juvenile-justice department’s director. “But the place itself and the design and the size and the location are barriers to doing good work.” Block and others are working to close Bon Air and replace it with something that reflects the juvenile justice reforms that have taken hold in Virginia and across the country—a system that once focused on confinement is now dedicated to rehabilitation. In recent years, more than 70 percent of Virginia's juvenile inmates were rearrested within three years of their release.*

*This documentary originally stated that Virginia has one of the highest recidivism rates in the country. This characterization was based on incomplete data. The documentary also stated that the three-year rearrest rate for current Bon Air inmates would be 74 percent. This was the rate for former juvenile inmates in Virginia in 2014. We regret the errors.
