Fighter for Freedom: The Frederick Douglass Story
Frederick Douglass was born in a slave cabin, in February, 1818, near the town of Easton, on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Separated from his mother when only a few weeks old he was raised by his grandparents. At about the age of six, his grandmother took him to the plantation of his master and left him there. Not being told by her that she was going to leave him, Douglass never recovered from the betrayal of the abandonment. When he was about eight he was sent to Baltimore to live as a houseboy with Hugh and Sophia Auld, relatives of his master. It was shortly after his arrival that his new mistress taught him the alphabet. When her husband forbade her to continue her instruction, because it was unlawful to teach slaves how to read, Frederick took it upon himself to learn. He made the neighborhood boys his teachers, by giving away his food in exchange for lessons in reading and writing. At about the age of twelve or thirteen Douglass purchased a copy of The Columbian Orator, a popular schoolbook of the time, which helped him to gain an understanding and appreciation of the power of the spoken and the written word, as two of the most effective means by which to bring about permanent, positive change.

Returning to the Eastern Shore, at approximately the age of fifteen, Douglass became a field hand, and experienced most of the horrifying conditions that plagued slaves during the 270 years of legalized slavery in America. But it was during this time that he had an encounter with the slavebreaker Edward Covey. Their fight ended in a draw, but the victory was Douglass', as his challenge to the slavebreaker restored his sense of self-worth. After an aborted escape attempt when he was about eighteen, he was sent back to Baltimore to live with the Auld family, and in early September, 1838, at the age of twenty, Douglass succeeded in escaping from slavery by impersonating a sailor.
Frederick Douglass He went first to New Bedford, Massachusetts, where he and his new wife Anna Murray began to raise a family. Whenever he could he attended abolitionist meetings, and, in October, 1841, after attending an anti-slavery convention on Nantucket Island, Douglass became a lecturer for the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society and a colleague of William Lloyd Garrison. This work led him into public speaking and writing. He published his own newspaper, The North Star, participated in the first women's rights convention at Seneca Falls, in 1848, and wrote three autobiographies. He was internationally recognized as an uncompromising abolitionist, indefatigable worker for justice and equal opportunity, and an unyielding defender of women's rights. He became a trusted advisor to Abraham Lincoln, United States Marshal for the District of Columbia, Recorder of Deeds for Washington, D.C., and Minister-General to the Republic of Haiti. Frederick Douglass died late in the afternoon or early evening, of Tuesday, 20 February 1895, at his home in Anacostia, Washington, DC.

Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia and commonly referred to as Washington, "the District", or simply D.C., is the capital of the United States. The signing of the Residence Act on July 16, 1790, approved the creation of a capital district located along the Potomac River on the country's East Coast. The U.S. Constitution provided for a federal district under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Congress and the District is therefore not a part of any U.S. state.nnSHUTDOWN = UPDATEnnCredit to VladilenBelinsky and various other people.nn Visit this place at more games visit

10 CREEPIEST Abandoned Houses
From spooky cabins that seems to only home to the paranormal, to places that might be swarmed with pirate ghosts. Here Creepiest Abandoned Haunted Houses.
Subscribe to American Eye
3 - The Octagon House
Washington DC has a number of reportedly haunted locations, as well as paranormal legends associated with the capital city of the United States. Yet many locals agree the best place to start when investigating the haunted locations in this city, is the Octagon House. Many claim it’s the most ghost-ridden area of the entire district of Columbia. The oldest of the Octagon's ghost legends tell of the mysterious ringing of the servant's call bells. This mansion during its colonial years was privy to many servants. These maids and butlers would be summoned with district bells which would ring at different pitches very loudly. As the servants mysteriously began to fade from this world, or disappear, these bells began to ring on their own. As time went on and the house filled up with spirits the bells began to ring more frequently, until they had to be taken down completely. Dolly Madison, a hostess who once lived here is a resident ghost said to said to haunt this home here. The smell of lilac flowers is whispered to follow her spirit. Colonel Taylor and his daughter's spirits are also rumoured to dwell here, especially near the stairs. One girl entered the spirit world and the third-floor landing. Lights turning on and off, doors slamming, ghostly figures running up and down the stairs and footprints in the dust left in the top floor landing have led to this house being abandoned. It was later reopened as a museum, though tours are only available upon appointment. Curators have a nasty habit of quitting and thismuseum is closed most of the year.
2 - Last House on Holland Island
In the state of Maryland, inside the Chesapeake Bay is an island which was once a thriving community of farmers, but since then has been abandoned. The birds often flock here and the sounds of children laughing, as well as teenagers whispering are commonly heard here.Though some say, this desolate location is actually still heavily populated, only the residents are no longer from this realm of existence. Holland Island was first settled in the early 1600s, yet by 1910 this village grew to include roughly 360 residents, seventy homes, stores and all the essentials of a fully functional community. Many worked along the coast of the island, as fishermen, crabbers, oyster dredgers and on workboats. So when the wind and tide began to erode the west side of the island, locals were quick to notice. But by 1918, the last family felt the fury of a tropical storm descend on their home and it nearly destroyed the local church. The settlers made their way back to the mainland. In 1922 the church was moved to Fairmount Maryland, where many of the houses and stores continued to deteriorate and collapse. Yet this one eerie house remains standing, the sandbags still beneath the floorboards proved the previous owners had worked tirelessly in an attempt to save their home but ultimately failed.
1 - The Pirate's House
This building was established in 1753, it can be located in downtown Savannah Georgia as the oldest property still standing, and rumour has it, that this place is a bevy of paranormal activity. The local legends say that this place was once home to real live pirates, and was used to store their treasure, smuggling exports, and weapons as they went back and forth from the sea to the shore back when this Southern city functioned as a port town. There is also said to be a tunnel in the basement which led out to the port for pirates to escape authorities, and for kidnappings for new sailors on these pirate vessels. In 1754 this house was named The Herb House and was transformed into an Inn and tavern for the visiting Pirates and other seamen. One pirate is rumoured to have died in the upstairs bedroom, and is said to haunt these halls to this very day. A small tavern remains inside this creepy two-story building, which was renamed the Pirate's House in the 1950s in order to carry on this proud tradition. This small section downstairs is the only part of the house which remains in use, the rest has fallen into disrepair and is largely abandoned. The second floor has many to frightened to venture up the stairs, laughter is often heard as well as visions of ghosts dressed in pirate garb. And the basement is even creepier, dark smells, odd sounds, and full-bodied apparitions with angry glares are often observed here, despite this place being empty for many decades. Many have reported feeling physically ill just from being inside the tavern of the Pirate's House, especially those who work there.

DC to NH 12 Jan 2012 Delegation for DC Statehood
DC At Large Councilmember David A Catania Details 12 Jan 2012 New Hampshire Statehood Trip
Trip to Concord, NH is First Stop in National Strategy
Members of the DC Council, Mayor Vincent C. Gray, and DC Vote announced that on Thursday, January 12, 2012, a delegation of city officials and citizens will travel to New Hampshire to give testimony before the House of Representatives Committee on State-Federal Relations and Veterans Affairs on HR 26: A resolution expressing support for admitting the District of Columbia as the 51st state of the United States of America.
We in the District have spent enough time talking to ourselves about the issue of statehood, said Catania. We were convinced long ago. For our efforts to be successful, we must expand the conversation about statehood. Our trip to New Hampshire marks the start of that expanded conversation.
New Hampshire is the first state on the itinerary. The state is a logical starting point considering its motto (Live Free or Die) and the parallels to the District's Taxation Without Representation' protest theme. The Council visited the New Hampshire legislature previously in 2008.
