Serbia... wow! Didn't expect we'd be in Belgrade making travel vlogs if you asked us a few years ago, but here we are, and we LOVE Belgrade! This place is an amazing, and very underrated, travel destination - let us show you why.
In this vlog we sort of cover both our initial impressions of Belgrade, how we feel about Serbia, our surprises and then at the end wrap it up after we've stayed for 2 weeks in Serbia. Theres lots of things to do in Belgrade - we visit the Fortress, explore a cute park, find an amazing restaurant scene, scope out the nightlife spots, eat some local(ish) food, check out the shopping scene and try some local craft beer.
First impressions last, or so they say, and it's true for Belgrade. How we felt on the first day is exactly how things stayed a few weeks later - it's amazing! We also took a road trip to Novi Sad for the day with friends, another popular spot in Serbia, but we weren't filming that day sorry.
Moral of the story - consider places like Serbia, cities like Belgrade, locations that the masses don't always chat about and share online. These are the cities and experiences we love, places like Belgrade are why we travel - hidden gems that we get to experience, travel, vlog and share with you... thanks us later.

SERBIA: BOSNIAN TROOPS HELD PRISONER IN UZICE CAMP
Serbo-Croat/Nat
Hundreds of Bosnian men, missing since the fall of the former safe havens of Zepa and Srebenicia, have been discovered alive in a camp across the border in Serbia proper.
The Yugoslav government is treating them not as prisoners of war but as illegal immigrants.
APTV has an exclusive report from inside the camp.
According to the Yugoslav government, these men were all once Bosnian government soldiers.
But at this camp in the town of Uzice, 200 kilometres south of Belgrade, they are detained not as prisoners of war, but as illegal immigrants.
They have been detained since the so-called safe areas of Srebrenicia and Zepa fell to the Bosnian Serbs last month.
SOUNDBITE: (Serbo-Croat)
We had three choices open to us. Either to stay in Zepa and fight it out, or to force our way to Serbia, or to surrender to the Bosnian Serbs.
SUPER CAPTION: Detainee
The men receive food, shelter and medical attention by Yugoslav doctors.

Serbian president’s plane plunges over 1,000m after careless co-pilot’s coffee spill
Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic’s recent plane scare on a government jet bound for Italy was caused by a coffee spill, according to a report published by the Serbian Civil Aviation Directorate on Tuesday.
President Nikolic and nine others, including four of his advisors, were in a government jet flying to a meeting with Pope Francis last Friday at 9 a.m. Midway through the flight, one of the plane’s three engines stopped working at an altitude of 10,058 metres above the Adriatic Sea and the plane began to descend. The aircraft dropped 1,609 metres before the captain was able to regain control.
An investigation by the Civil Aviation Directorate found that the co-pilot spilled coffee in the cockpit during the flight. According to the report, as the co-pilot cleaned up the mess, he inadvertently activated the emergency slot extension in the cockpit. Once the emergency slot extension was activated, the automatic pilot turned off and caused the plane to lose altitude. The engine failed while the plane was losing altitude.
Once the captain regained control of the aircraft, the plane returned to Belgrade and President Nikolic had to postpone the meeting with the pope.
According to the New York Times, the co-pilot has been temporarily suspended from duty. The 34-year-old Dassault Falcon 50 has experienced several serious malfunctions in recent years though, and the presidential press office said that President Nikolic may no longer use the aging jet.

Thousands still crossing Serbia-Croatia border
(16 Oct 2015) Thousands of migrants and refugees are continuing to arrive at the border between Serbia and Croatia despite difficult weather conditions.
A large group arrived at Berkasovo - on the Serbian side of the border - on Thursday before crossing into Croatia where they boarded buses and continued their journey.
Among them was Mohammad Nabi, a former officer who served six years in the Afghan army.
Nabi, like many others, is seeking to escape the poverty and conflict that is rife in his homeland.
Europe's degree of welcome for the migrants and refugees has fluctuated wildly over the course of the crisis, with responses varying across governments and countries.
After the development of a new Europe-wide system a few months ago, Nabi's journey will now be slightly smoother - and his burden slightly lighter.
Aid workers say the short stretch of land between Serbia and Croatia has turned into a key check point, and is a sign of how the route has become smoother over time, especially in the Balkans.
Volunteers on the Serbian side, as well as government agencies on the Croatian side, are handing out food and drink to people looking for respite from the cold autumn weather.

See here the previous episode:
Because of lack of time, we decided to only visit Serbian's capital, beautiful Belgrade. We had a nice walk in Kalemegden park, Belgrade Fortress & Saint Mark Church. We wanted to visit the Nikola Tesla museum but surprisingly it was closed on Monday like all the other museums... we are amateur
However, we had fun in the rain! It's worth the detour.

Memorial for people killed in WW2 in Serbia
(9 May 2016) Hundreds gathered in Belgrade on Monday to mark the 71th anniversary of Victory Day, which represents the surrender of Nazi Germany in World War II.
People carrying pictures of their relatives killed during World War II gathered at a memorial honouring Soviet soldiers who died during the 1945 liberation of the Serbian capital from Nazi occupation.
Serbian officials and the Russian ambassador to Serbia also attended the gathering and laid wreaths at the memorial.
Participants walked to the memorial in a march organised by Russian groups in Serbia, in a sign of growing influence from Moscow in the Balkan country that is a historic Slavic ally.

Gregory Freeman On How The Serbs Saved US Airmen In WW2/ The Forgotten 500
THE FORGOTTEN 500 - Author Gregory A. Freeman: The Untold Story of the Men Who Risked All for the Greatest Rescue Mission of World War II.
(New American Library, August 2007)
By Gregory A. Freeman
One of the last untold stories of World War II is also one of the greatest - a story of adventure, daring, danger and heroics, followed by a web of conspiracy, lies, and coverup.
THE FORGOTTEN 500 is one of the greatest rescue and escape stories ever, but hardly anyone has heard about it. And that's by design. The U.S., British, and Yugoslav governments hid details of this story for decades, purposefully denying credit to the heroic rescuers and the foreign ally who gave his life to help allied airmen as they were hunted down by Nazis in the hills of Yugoslavia.
THE FORGOTTEN 500 tells the story of Operation Halyard in 1944, the largest rescue ever of downed American airmen. More than 500 U.S. airmen were rescued, along with some from other countries, all right under the noses of the Germans, and mostly in broad daylight. The mission was a complete success - the kind that should have been trumpeted in news reels and on the front page. (By comparison, the famed escape of allied prisoners from a German POW camp portrayed in the movie The Great Escape involved 200 men, and only 76 were successful.)
It is a little known episode that started with one edge-of-your seat rescue in August 1944, followed by a series of additional rescues in the following months. American agents from the OSS, the precursor of the CIA, worked with a Serbian guerilla, General Draza Mihailovich, to carry out the huge, ultra-secret rescue mission.
THE FORGOTTEN 500 weaves together the tales of a dozen young airmen shot down in the hills of Yugoslavia during bombing runs, and the five secret agents who conducted their amazing rescue. These are the stories of young men who were eager to join the war and fight the Germans, even finding excitement in the often deadly trips from Italy to bomb German oil fields in Romania, but who found themselves parachuting out of crippled planes and into the arms of strange, rough looking villagers in a country they knew nothing about. They soon found out that the local Serbs were willing to sacrifice their own lives to keep the downed airmen out of German hands, but they still wondered if anyone was coming for them or if they would spend the rest of the war hiding from German patrols and barely surviving on goat's milk and bread made with hay to make it more filling.
When OSS agents in Italy heard of the stranded airmen, they began planning an elaborate and previously unheard of rescue - the Americans would send in a fleet of C-47 cargo planes to land in the hills of Yugoslavia, behind enemy lines, to pluck out hundreds of airmen. It was audacious and risky beyond belief, but there was no other way to get those boys out of German territory. The list of challenges and potential problems seemed never ending: the airmen had to evade capture until the rescue could be organized, they had to build an airstrip large enough for C-47s without any tools and without the Germans finding out, and then the planes had to make it in and out without being shot down.
Could it really be done? No one knew, but they were going to try.
THE FORGOTTEN 500 takes the reader along on this suspenseful adventure, while also explaining how the Yugoslav guerilla fighter who made it all possible was betrayed by his western allies. THE FORGOTTEN 500 is the story of young men struggling to make it back home to their families, and their decades-long quest to acknowledge the secret agents and the foreign soldiers who risked all for them.
Long silenced by the governments of several nations, the full story of Operation Halyard and the young men who risked everything for their fellow soldiers is revealed for the first time in this book.
THE FORGOTTEN 500 is truly the greatest World War II story never told.
This was the largest rescue of American lives from behind enemy lines in American history.

LEADIN:
In a country bombed by the United States only a few years ago and where anti-American sentiments still run high, a group of Serbian cowboys are keeping the Wild West alive.
But replica Winchesters, Stetson hats and leather chaps don't come cheap - the group says it is struggling financially without state support.
STORYLINE:
This isn't the Wild West, this isn't America.
This group of cowboy enthusiasts are from Serbia.
For them dressing up as cowboys and wielding replica guns represents the ultimate freedom.
Checking his rifle and staring down the barrel is Milorad Sudar - or Old Shatterhand as he's known by his friends.
Sudar is among a group admirers of America's 19th century Wild West who set up a Union of Western Shooters of Serbia.
These men, mostly in their late 50s' or 60s', wear cowboy hats and boots, shoot colts or Winchester rifles and brandish names such as Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday.
Sudar says: We are a generation who grew up on Western movies. At that time we used to watch historic cowboy movies, Tarzan movies and cartoons, but mostly cowboy movies.
The group is particularly interested in the positive role models of Wild West films.
Adventurous and positive characters attracted us. In one word, the world justice attracted us. The names we chose are all positive characters. There is only one member who chose the name of a bad guy, explains Sudar.
Serbia's cowboys have faced a number of difficulties - from financial to political - since first deciding to turn their dreams into reality several years ago.
Their weapons - either originals or replicas of those used in 19th century America - can only be found abroad and are far too expensive for Serbia, where average salaries are around Euros 300 (USD $420).
Yet, the cowboys say, it offers an escape from the grim reality of post war Serbia.

YUGOSLAVIA: BELGRADE: NATO ATTACKS AFTERMATH
Serbo-Croat/Nat
NATO jets struck before dawn on Friday in the heart of Belgrade, blasting the headquarters of the Yugoslav army, the federal interior ministry and a civilian neighborhood.
It was the Western alliance's fiercest attack so far on the Yugoslav capital.
Following a series of huge explosions, fire and thick smoke rose above several major government buildings.
Witnesses said the army headquarters was in flames.
The private Beta news agency said other buildings near the army headquarters, including the Yugoslav foreign ministry, were damaged by the blast.
Witnesses said missiles also struck the Vracar residential district, about 1.6 kilometers (one mile) southeast of the army headquarters, damaging two houses.
At least four people, including one woman, were injured.
The blasts shattered a water main, flooding the area.
Residents spoke of their escape from nearby apartments as fears grew the buildings might collapse or be struck.
