Phipps Conservatory & Botanical Gardens - Pittsburgh, PA
Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens is a complex of buildings and grounds set in Schenley Park, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. It is a City of Pittsburgh historic landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The gardens were founded in 1893 by steel and real-estate magnate Henry Phipps as a gift to the City of Pittsburgh. Its purpose is to educate and entertain the people of Pittsburgh with formal gardens and various species of exotic plants. Currently, the facilities house elaborate gardens within the thirteen room conservatory itself and on the adjoining grounds. In addition to its primary flora exhibits, the sophisticated glass and metal work of the Lord & Burnham conservatory offers an interesting example of Victorian greenhouse architecture. Phipps Conservatory & Botanical Gardens hosted dinner for many world leaders, including President Obama, for the G-20 Summit held in Pittsburgh, PA on September 24, 2009.
This video was taken on January 6, 2013. It was the final day of the season for the Winter Flower Show and Winter Light Garden.

The Old Tioga Inn B&B Near Ricketts Glen State Park, PA
We enjoyed a short stay at The Old Tioga Inn B&B very near Ricketts Glen State Park in northeastern Pennsylvania. Our goal was to hike the 7.1 mile loop to see the 22+ waterfalls on The Falls Trail. Our room was super comfy, cozy, and clean. Our friendly hosts, Laura and her family, were welcoming. Each morning we were served a delicious hearty home cooked breakfast, which provided fuel for our active days. The in-room hot tub was wonderful for relaxation, and the expansive grounds and garden was a peaceful setting. We loved all the animals on the grounds and the surrounding nature as well. Even though the property is on a fairly busy road the home is set back and the accommodations are behind the main living quarters, so we didn't hear any street noise. It was a great experience being there, and I would stay there again when visiting the area!

At approximately 11:20 a.m., two laborers in the Pittston vein heard a sharp “popping” sound. They quickly called upon
John Williams, the assistant foreman.
The three employees hurried to escape and notify superintendent Robert Groves, who immediately ordered an evacuation,
although he withheld the severity
of the situation. Unfortunately, the other three men who were stationed in this vein could not escape in time and the
fierce waters of the Susquehanna took their lives.
While millions of gallons of water flooded into the mine, thirty-three men managed to catch the last elevators at the
May shaft, but forty-five others remained trapped,
desperately seeking their own outlet. During the first sixty four hours of the emergency, an estimated 2.7 million gallons
of water per minute streamed underground from an enormous whirlpool near the riverbank.
Down below, thirty-two men wandered in two separate groups until they managed to escape through the abandoned Eagle air
shaft. Pennsylvania Coal Company surveyor, Joe Stella, led the first group of seven. He not
only knew the mines well, but also possessed maps which allowed his group to find a direct course to the opening. The
second group, led by Myron Thomas, consisted of twenty-five men who wandered for hours before
they found their way to safety. Unfortunately, twelve of the original remaining bodies have never been recovered.
Thousands of bails of hay and hundreds of railroad ties were also added. Culm,
dirt, and rock along with over 50 coal and railroad cars barely stopped the river.
Finally they diverted the river around Wintermoot Island by building dams at both ends of the
island. Once they pumped the water out between the dams the size of the hole was evident.
Tons of clay and rock were poured into the hole and a concrete cap was placed on top of the opening. They then pumped
much of the water out of the mine to look for the 12 missing miners.
How could this tragedy have happened? The original plan was to keep 50 feet of rock and coal between the workings and the
river bottom. The Knox company wanted this to be lowered to 35 feet. Mine inspectors deemed
this ok as it would be sufficient to stand up to the river. At this point the seam of coal sloped up towards the river in
what is known as an anticline. Company owners kept pushing the miners closer and closer to the river bottom until the rock
could no longer support the river. At the point where the river broke through the rock was only 5 to 6 feet thick! This
disaster ended deep mining in the Wyoming valley as almost all of the coal company’s mines connected.

Why is Philadelphia So Expensive?
Why is Philadelphia so expensive? At first thought you may not expect Philadelphia to be an expensive tourist destination, but think again, especially if staying in the downtown area of Philadelphia. Average hotels in downtown Philly start at around $200 and range to as high as $1000. Also the tax rates in Philly are high.

Royce Brown At Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary
The following video contains graphic images and language.
Royce Brown was in prison at the Lewisburg federal penitentiary in central Pennsylvania. In January 2014, Brown was removed from a cell and put in four-point restraints, which chain an inmate's arms and legs to a platform.
At Lewisburg, one of the toughest prisons in America, doubling up inmates in cells designed for solitary confinement can lead to violence, and for some who refuse a cellmate, they can be placed in handcuffs and chains.
