8 Most Insane Heists - Bank robberies, jewel heist, art theft and more
8. The Collar Bomb Bank Robbery
In 2003 Brian Douglas Wells, a pizza delivery man, walked into a Pennsylvania bank with a shotgun and demanded 250k in cash. Wells left with just $8,702 and was caught shortly after the robbery. The police discovered a collar bomb on Well's neck. Wells explained that he was forced to commit the robbery after having the device fitted. The bomb squad was called but 3 minutes before they arrived, the device started beeping and then exploded, killing Wells instantly. An investigation after the robbery found that Wells was involved in planning the robbery however he had been told by his co-conspirators that the bomb was fake. Wells had been given four tasks to complete, the first was the robbery, the investigation revealed that even if Wells had got away with the robbery, the device would have exploded before he could complete the tasks.
7. Great Train Robbery
In 1963, a gang of 15 pulled off one of the worlds greatest robbery, without even using a gun. £2.3 million (£40 million today) was stolen off of a post office train in England. The robbery went largely according to plan and the group would have gotten away with the heist – except, for one foolish decision. The gang played a game of monopoly with the stolen money, leaving their fingerprints which were later discovered by police.
6. Thomas Blood and the Crown Jewels Of England
1671, Thomas Blood was an Irish Assassin, decided on an ambitious robbery target – the Crown Jewels of England. Held in the Tower of London and surrounded by guards, Blood wore a costume and fabricated an elaborate story to secure a private viewing, Blood and his entourage knocked out the keeper of the jewels and stuffed the jewels into their pockets and made a run for it. They didn’t get far, guards tackled the gang from their horses. In a strange end to the robbery, King Charles the second was amused by the attempt and pardoned Blood.
5. Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum Heist
In 1990, while Boston celebrated St. Patrick’s day by drinking beer, two thieves dressed as Boston police officers entered the museum and stole 500 million dollars worth of precious art. Stolen art pieces include a Rembrandt, Manet, and a few by Degas. The paintings have never been recovered. Empty frames now hang in the room, in a hope that they will one day be returned.
4. Antwerp Diamond Heist
In 2003 a gang lead by Leonardo Notarbartolo carried out one of the largest diamond heists in history. Two years before the robbery, Notarbartolo rented an office inside the diamond centre, he had 24 hour access to the building and a safe deposit box within the vault. The thieves raided 123 security boxes, full of diamonds, gold and jewellery. Notarbartolo was caught but the diamonds were never found.
3. Knightsbridge Security Deposit
One of the largest bank robberies in history. In 1987 Valerio Viccei and an accomplice entered the centre pretending to want to rent one of the safety deposit boxes. They then threatened the manager and security guards with handguns, broke open the safe deposit boxes and escaped with £60m in valuables. Viccei was later caught when he returned to England to pick up his a Ferrari Testarossa he bought. Viccei was sentenced to 22 years in prison and was killed on day release in a gun fight with the police in 2000.
2. Brazil's Banco Central
In 2005 Brazilian thieves dug a 650ft tunnel from a nearby farmhouse, directly into the bank. Neighbours had noticed vans full of building materials leaving the area on a daily basis however no one was suspected anything because the gang had disguised the farmhouse as a landscaping company. Over the weekend, the thieves took their time stealing near 72m in bank notes. The money wasn’t insured because the bank believed the risk of a theft to be extremely low. Some of the thieves involved have been caught but much of the money has never been recovered.
1. Central Bank of Iraq Robbery
The largest bank heist in history took place during the opening hours the Iraq War. Saddam Hussein ordered his son and a close advisor collect $1 billion dollars from the Central Bank of Iraq. America were preparing to drop the first bombs of the Iraq War, Saddams plan was to escape with enough money to ensure his survival. Saddam gave his son a hand written note authorising the removal of 1billion dollars from the Central Bank ordering that no questions were asked. It took workers five hours to load 1 billion US dollars in to three trucks. 650m was later discovered hidden in the walls of a Palace owned by the dictator. 350m has never been recovered.

Police have confirmed the 32-year-old Dutchman was driving his car in the Langbroekdreef region of the city when the fatal gun attack occurred. The ex-defender is believed to have attempted to escape the gunmen by driving towards a nearby fire station, according to De Telegraaf. However, his vehicle hit the front of the building and he was unable to be resuscitated. It is thought that he tried to escape by driving towards a nearby fire station where firefighters attempted to help the footballer before he died of his injuries. Amsterdam cops said: “We can confirm that the fatal victim of the shooting incident on Langbroekdreef last night was 32-year-old Kelvin Maynard. “The investigation into his death is in full swing.” Police are appealing for witnesses as they search for two suspects who are believed to have escaped on a black scooter. The Dutch-Surinamese player was currently playing for non-league Dutch club Alphnese Boys. Maynard secured a “dream move” to England in November 2014 when he signed for fellow countryman Jimmy Floyd-Hasselbaink at Burton from Royal Antwerp. The full-back helped the Brewers to win the League Two title during his first season at the club. He was then rewarded with another one-year contract, telling the club’s website: “I'm very excited. It was always a dream for me to play in England.” Burton went on to seal a second successive promotion to earn Championship football but Maynard cruelly missed out. He damaged his knee during a pre-season friendly with Derby County that ruled him out for the campaign. Maynard left in 2016 and returned to Holland with SV Spakenburg. He played nine league matches in total for the Brewers and scored one goal. Maynard, born in Paramaribo in Suriname, was last playing for Dutch amateur side Quick Boys. He began his career with FC Volendam in 2006 and spent four years there before signing for Olhanense. A move from Holland to Hungarian side Kecskemeti TE followed in summer of 2011, but he was released in December and headed back to the Netherlands to join FC Emmen. Maynard’s displays there then caught the eye of Belgian outfit Royal Antwerp, where he made 27 league appearances during the 2013/14 campaign before signing for Hasselbaink at Burton. Burton Albion released a statement which read: Everyone at Burton Albion Football Club is saddened to learn of the tragic death of our former player Kelvin Maynard at the age of 32. Our sympathies go out to all his family and friends at this difficult time. Current club, Alphnese boys, also released a statement saying: Last night we received the terrible news of the death of Kelv

Number 7 Antwerp Diamond
On February 15 to 16, 2003, a crew lead by Leonardo Notabartolo took over $100 million worth of Diamonds, gold and jewellery from the Antwerp World Diamond Center, in Belgium. Notabartolo was the head of a network calling itself ‘The School of Turin’. The vault that the crew hit had infrared heat detectors, a seismic detector, a magnetic field, a Doppler radar and a lock with 100 million combinations. Notabartolo rented an apartment in the diamond center, which provided a tenant ID card and 24-hour access to the building where the stones were kept. He also gained access to a safe deposit box inside the vault, posing, for credibility, as an Italian diamond merchant.
Number 6 Millennium Dome
The Millennium Dome act took place during a diamond exhibition in Greenwich, South East London. The crew planned on taking several precious stones with them that were on display. On November 7, 2000, four members entered the exhibition wearing masks. The plan was working and, according to one of them ‘I was twelve inches from pay day. It would have been a blinding Christmas.’ However, unaware to them, the authorities had been surveilling the crew’s moves for some time.
Number 5 Nice Bank
Masterminded by Albert Spaggiari, this took France by storm, in 1976. The safe at the Societe Generale bank in Nice was considered impenetrable, which is why Spaggiari devised a plan to get into it from below. He rented a safe deposit box and planted a loud alarm clock inside, to check for any acoustic or seismic detection technology. There weren’t any alarms, because there weren’t any access points, beyond its thick doors. For the next two months, Spaggiari and his crew dug a 26-foot tunnel from the sewers to the vault floor. They took hours opening more than 400 safe deposit boxes. The crew reportedly sat down for a picnic lunch inside the vault, after welding its doors shut from the inside. Before they took off, they left a message on the walls.
Number 4 Vincenzo Peruggia
While Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa is widely considered to be priceless, it holds the world record for the highest known insurance valuation in history. In 1962 it was valued at $100 million, which, as of the making of this video, would be adjusted to roughly $840 million. The man responsible was Vincenzo Peruggia. In 1911, the former Louvre worker entered the museum disguised as an employee, wearing a white smock. He waited until the room where the painting hung was empty. Then, Peruggia took the Mona Lisa off the wall and to a nearby staircase. He removed the protective case and frame, wrapped the painting in his smock and tucked it under his arm. Peruggia left the building through the employees’ entrance, the same he way he’d come in. He still had the painting in his Paris apartment when the police came to question him, but they accepted his alibi. Then, for two years he hid the Mona Lisa in his apartment in Florence, Italy.
Number 3 DB Cooper
DB Cooper became a sort of folk hero in the US. The day before Thanksgiving, in 1971, a man in a suit bought a ticket on Northwest Orient Airlines Flight 305, from Portland to Seattle. He gave his name as Dan Cooper, a fake name, which the media would later misinterpret as DB Cooper. Shortly after the plane took off, the man gave one of the flight attendants a note. Then he opened it, revealing a battery attached to numerous wires and red sticks. DB Cooper demanded four parachutes as well a ransom of $200,000 in $20 bills. The authorities complied when the plane landed in Seattle and Cooper released 36 passengers.
Number 2 Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum
13 works of art, by Rembrandt, Manet, Degas and others, with a combined value of $500 million, were taken on March 18, 1990 from Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. It’s the largest-valued theft of private property in history. ‘The Concert’ by Vermeer, valued at $200 million was the most valuable painting. The works had been purchased by collector Isabella Stewart Gardner and left on permanent display at the museum, along with the rest of her collection. It lasted about 81 minutes, they made two trips to their car before disappearing. Their last words to the guards were ‘You’ll be hearing from us in about a year’, but nobody ever did.
Number 1 Oak Bay Bank
In the 70s and 80s, Oak Bay was known as the bank capital of British Columbia. Such was a case in 2015, when an unnamed 20-year-old man entered a TD Canada Trust branch, passed the teller a note and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Videos can use content-based copyright law contains reasonable use Fair Use ( DUTCH cops are probing whether ex-Burton Albion star Kelvin Maynard was shot dead on Wednesday night in revenge for a 400kg cocaine heist. The line of investigation comes as a selfie taken by the 32-year-old Dutchman emerged which shows him clutching a massive wad of 50 Euro notes. The selfie began circulating on social media the day after Maynard was gunned down by two men on a black scooter when he was driving his car in the Langbroekdreef region of Amsterdam. Police say they suspect the former full-back may played a part in stealing 400kg cocaine from a dealer. A spokesman told De Telegraaf: Even though we are still taking other scenarios into account, we are investigating the scenario that he became a victim after ‘rip deal’.” The ex-defender is believed to have attempted to escape the gunmen by driving towards a nearby fire station, according to De Telegraaf.
