Episode 1: Austria - The Europa Bridge
The Europa Bridge near Innsbruck is a core section of Austria's Brenner Autobahn. It is also a bottleneck for travelers heading south through the Alps to Italy,Austria and Switzerland. In the 1960s,the arching structure was considered an engineering masterpiece and for four decades was Europe's highest bridge. During the Cold War,the military set up barricades and rigged the crossing with explosives. Today,the bridge is a major road link seeing heavy traffic over the Easter and summer holidays.

Der Countdown zum Sprung läuft............
Noch einen Schritt vor, die Zehenspitzen ragen bereits über den Abgrund, die Hände klammern sich links und rechts an das Geländer. Es wird ernst. Die Betreuer zählen Fünf, Vier, drei, ... Nicht jeder springt sofort, manche auch gar nicht. Drei bis vier Prozent besinnen sich in letzter Sekunde eines besseren, lassen sich auch nicht von den Anfeuerungsrufen der Freude treiben, die Angst - oder die Vernunft - hat gewonnen.
Andere wieder zögern, Sekunden, Minuten, lange Minuten, in denen man mit sich selber kämpft. Jeder reagiert anders. Echte Kerle werden beim Blick in den Abgrund auf einmal zu Memmen.
Man muss sich überwinden, die Angst vor dem Fall in den Abgrund kann einem keiner nehmen. Doch bezüglich der Sicherheit braucht sich niemand Sorgen machen. Mit dem Kombigurt und den Fußgamaschen ist man dreifach mit dem Bungy-Seil verbunden, nach 300 Sprüngen wird das Seil ausgetauscht, Sicherheit ist oberstes Gebot.
Kopfüber in den freien Fall
Das Anlegen des Gurtes und der beiden Fußgamaschen, die Waage, die kurze Einweisung, und schon steht man beim Absprung und der Countdown beginnt.
Zwei, eins - Bungy!!! Die Hände lassen los, mit einem Satz hechte ich hinaus , gestreckte Körperhaltung, Kopf voraus, ein langer, erlösender Schrei. Kein Zögern, keine Sekunde habe ich überlegt.
Nur wenige Sekunden dauert der freie Fall, bei dem man mit bis zu 120 Sachen in den Tiefe rauscht, und schon beginnt die langsame und sanfte Abbremsung durch das Bungee-Seil. Rund 25 Meter über dem grünen Wiesenfleck setzt der Rebound ein, wie im Express-Fahrstuhl schießt man nach oben, genießt den kurzen Moment der Schwerelosigkeit......Crazy Shit. But I like it...
Europabrücke (Europe's bridge). This 777 meter long bridge slashes like a scar across the Wipp valley south of Innsbruck. It forms part of the Brenner Autobahn, and at 192 metres high it was once (until 2004) the highest bridge in Europe.

The My Way Alpine Europe Tour I'm leading is well underway, as we hopscotch across borders through the Alps. After a memory-packed day traveling from the Dolomites to Bavaria, we popped back into Austria for an early-evening hike to a ruined castle (Ehrenberg, above Reutte) and a wobbly ramble over a very long and very high suspension bridge. My friend Armin dreamed up, spearheaded, and now manages this exciting new activity that's bringing lots of visitors to his little town. We're 400 feet above our teeny tour bus, at the point where three valleys converge — a strategic location since this was the Roman Via Claudia. The joy on our group’s faces shows the fun in mixing exhilarating experiences with historical sights.

Innsbruck is the capital city of the federal state of Tyrol (Tirol) in western Austria. It is located in the Inn Valley at the junction with the Wipptal (Sill River), which provides access to the Brenner Pass, some 30 km (18.6 mi) south of Innsbruck. It is about half way between Munich (Germany) and Verona (Italy). Located in the broad valley between high mountains, the Nordkette (Hafelekar, 2,334 metres or 7,657 feet) in the north, Patscherkofel (2,246 m or 7,369 ft) and Serles (2,718 m or 8,917 ft) in the south. It is an internationally renowned winter sports centre, and hosted the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics as well as the 1984 and 1988 Winter Paralympics. Innsbruck hosted the first Winter Youth Olympics in 2012. The word bruck comes from the same root as the modern German word Brücke meaning bridge which leads to the bridge over the Inn.

Jeder der vor kurzem auf der B179 bei Reutte unterwegs war, hat mit Sicherheit festgestellt: In schwindelerregender Höhe überspannt eine Seilhängebrücke das Tal und verbindet somit die Ruine Ehrenberg mit dem Fort Claudia. Die Fußgängerhängebrücke trägt den Namen “highline179″. Die luftige Überquerung der weit über die Grenzen Tirols hinaus bekannten Fernpassstraße B179 soll mit diesem Namen zum Ausdruck gebracht werden. Seit November 2014 können mutige Besucher die Gelegenheit nutzen und auf der highline179 ihre Schwindelfreiheit testen.
Für all jene, denen der bloße Anblick der Brücke schon reicht, steht im Bereich der Klause der Landgasthof Klause zur Einkehr bereit. Außerdem können Sie dem Museum der Burgenwelt Ehrenberg oder der neuen Naturausstellung – Der Letzte Wilde – einen Besuch abstatten.

Geschichte zur Brücke
Die Vision eine Brücke über die B179 von Burg zu Burg zu spannen wurde erstmalig 1998/1999 vom Architekten Armin Walch geboren. Damals sollte die Hängebrücke lediglich 250m lang werden. 2008 wurden die Pläne überarbeitet, die Länge der Brücke sollte nun 312m betragen und damit die „Längste Hängebrücke der Alpen“ werden.
Aber auch diese Planung wurde im Frühjahr 2012 überarbeitet und ausgefeilt. Die Zielrichtung wurde damals ganz klar auf „Längste Seilhängebrücke der Welt“ gelegt. Mit ca. 406m Länge sollte die highline179 den damals aktuellen Rekord im Guinness Buch der Rekorde (Kokonoe Yume Bridge Japan 390m) brechen. Zur Umsetzung der ehrgeizigen Pläne fehlte nur noch ein Investor.
Martin Kathrein – technischer Bereichsleiter der Firma Strabag machte sich auf die Suche und wurde nach einiger Zeit auch fündig. Ein interessierter Investor aus der Region finanzierte den Bau der highline179 aus eigener Tasche. Am 23. November 2014 wurde die Seilhängebrücke eröffnet. Seit Ende 2014 trägt die highline179 nun den Titel als längste Fußgängerhängebrücke der Welt im Tibet Style.
