CHINESE CANTONESE OPERA SAI KUNG SHOW 2019 || CHINESE CULTURAL SHOW|| #RizzAllina #oghekelate
It’s Saturday night and Sai Kung’s bamboo opera theatre is filling up. Families are gathering to take their allotted seats, their names hand-written on labels attached to the seatbacks. Outside, people mill around temporary market stalls set up opposite Steamers selling balloons, jewellery, snacks and desserts.
We are escorted through the growing crowd and led backstage. Tonight we are getting a privileged peek behind the scenes into the tradition-bound and beautiful world of Cantonese opera.
For a few weeks in early summer, Sai Kung town is transformed. Traffic is rerouted, the basketball court is cleared and a huge bamboo theatre springs up across Yi Chun Street. The opera is in town.
Thousands of people turn up for the five days of performances, some sitting enthralled for hours, others standing for just a few minutes, fanning themselves furiously or nipping out to chat with friends. It’s one of Sai Kung’s biggest annual events.
The opera is part of the Tin Hau Festival and has been a Sai Kung tradition for more than 60 years. It’s usually held up to a month after the festival for entirely practical reasons: to limit traffic problems and to ensure the organisers can hire the best crew.

China and Peru reaffirm friendship through Spring Festival celebrations
China and Peru are strengthening ties of friendship by celebrating the Chinese New Year. The Chinese Embassy in Lima opened its doors to receive hundreds of guests for an evening of entertainment and traditional food from the Asian country. An artistic delegation from Chengdu thrilled audiences with their operatic performances, illusions, and martial arts demonstrations.
Li Yun, the embassy's business liaison, said that, during the Year of the Rooster, bilateral relations were deepened as the two countries exchanged ideas on politics, economics, and culture. She stated that the coming Year of the Dog would continue and even reinforce these ties.
Golden Monkey Celebrating the Chinese Spring Festival, 2016 Spring Festival Gala, Liao Ning TV
Zhang Jin Lai, aka Liu Xiao Ling Tong, the actor of the Monkey King in Journey to The West, is performing in the show Golden Monkey Celebrating the Chinese Spring Festival of the 2016 Spring Festival Gala held by Liao Ning Television.
The interview transcript:
Host: Let us welcome the Monkey King, Liu Xiao Ling Tong. Mr Zhang, please say a few words to our people.
Zhang: Dear friends. It's the Chinese Lunar Year of the Monkey this year, and it is also the 30th anniversary of the household TV series Journey to the West by CCTV (China Central Television). Million thanks to the support of the friends from all over the world. As the new year is coming, I would like to extend my best wishes to you all. Happy Chinese Lunar New Year of the Monkey!
Host: As it is known to us all that, your performance of the handsome Monkey King is irreplaceable for Chinese people for decades. As we recall, your real name is Zhang Jin Lai, but why people call you Liu Xiao Ling Tong (a little six-year-old child)?
Zhang: Just now, many friends called me Mr Liu or Mr Sun Wu Kong (Monkey King), Liu Xiao Ling Tong is actually my professional name. Four generations of my families played the Monkey King, Sun Wu Kong. The professional name of my great grandfarther is Huo Hou Zhang (A living monkey named Zhang), my grandfarther Sai Huo Hou (the Fighter King of the Monkey). My farther is more well known, because in the 1960s he played in the color film Monkey King's Three Fights with the White Bone Demon, an adaption of a Shao Xing Opera, and he named himself Liu Ling Tong (a six-year-old child) for the reason that he learnt to act as a monkey since six years old. Similarly, my uncle is called Qi Ling Tong (a seven-year-old child), playing Zhu Ba Jie (Pig King). one of my cousin is called Xiao Liu Ling Tong (also a little six-year-old child). Dramatically, when it comes to me, my farther came up with a great idea of switching the position of Liu and Xiao, and finally, I am Liu Xiao Ling Tong (a little six-year-old child), after that I played the Monkey King in Journey to The West (CCTV, 1983). My farther always told me that the Monkey King does not only belongs to the Zhang, but China and the world at large.
Host: Wow! What a great remark. I think that is why people say that we all bear in mind the four generations of the Monkey King played by the Zhang, because their skills in deed delight the world for centuries. Let us enjoy Mr Zhang's fantabulous show Golden Monkey Celebrating the Chinese Spring Festival!

New Peking Opera: Reopening the ancient connection between China and Europe
A new Peking Opera named “Bond of Silk” telling stories of the ancient Silk Road has premiered at Beijing’s National Center for the Performing Arts.
It’s quintessentially Chinese, both in content and aesthetics, and shows how a previous rebuilding of the Silk Road can affect the destiny of the whole nation.
The Silk Road was first initiated in the Han Dynasty, connecting China with Europe and the Middle East. It had been closed and reopened three times before Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty gave the order to reopen it.
There are dual storylines, one featuring the emperor and the other featuring an ordinary woman. Both the fate of the nation and the fate of each individual are closely linked.

Text description provided by the architects. The new Culture & Arts Centre by Zaha Hadid Architects incorporates a contemporary art museum (MICA), a 1,800-seat theatre with supporting facilities and a multipurpose hall. Its organic architectural language is defined by pedestrian routes that weave through the site to connect with neighbouring streets. Providing views of the adjacent Meixi Lake from the city and giving access to the parks and walking trails on the lake’s Festival Island, this ensemble of three separate cultural institutions creates external courtyards where pedestrian routes intersect for outdoor events and sculpture exhibitions. The largest and most versatile cultural centre in Hunan province, the Culture & Arts Centre connects directly with its station on Line 2 of Changsha’s new Metro System. Located on historic trade routes through China, the city of Changsha’s traditions as an important centre of communications continues as one of the country’s leading media hubs with the centre’s Grand Theatre hosting a popular programme of performances and television productions.Designed for the widest variety of performing arts, the Grand Theatre provides all front-of-house functions in sculpted lobbies, bars, and hospitality suites, as well as the necessary ancillary functions including administration offices, rehearsal studios, backstage logistics, wardrobe, and dressing rooms. With eight juxtaposed exhibition galleries totaling 10,000 sq.m centered around an atrium for large-scale installations and events, the MICA art museum also includes dedicated spaces for community workshops, a lecture theatre, café, and museum shop. The Small Theatre is characterized by its flexibility. This multipurpose hall with a capacity of 500 seats can be transformed into different configurations to accommodate a broad range of functions and performances that span from small plays, fashion shows and music performances to banquets and commercial events.Totaling 115,000 sq.m, these three civic institutions are uniquely defined and separate, yet complement each other with different opening times creating vitality throughout the day and evening. The theatre becomes active as the art museum begins to conclude its day-time operations, whilst the variety of events in the smaller theatre ensures it will be used at all times.

Intertwined
Intertwined is a look at the world famous Quanzhou Marionette Troupe. The organization performs traditional Chinese puppet shows around China and the world, to much praise and affection. The film introduces you to two puppeteers, a puppet master who has worked with puppets for over 38 years and a young female newcomer to the organization. As the master reflects on his long career, and the new comer looks to the future, the fate of puppeteering lies in the balance. Will this ancient art form survive in modernized China? What can be done to make puppeteering relevant to a new generation of people worldwide?

Meixihu / Changsha / Zaha Hadid Architects
The cultural mega centre and holy trifecta of Architecture - Grand Theatre, Art Museum and Multi-purpose Theatre designed by Zaha Hadid Architects in Changsha, Hunan Province China.
I recently visited the West Lake in Changsha to document and discover this Architectural tour-de-force - a composition of buildings that unite to form a new Cultural district in the west of the city. The formal and spatial experience is unified by the signature design language that Zaha Hadid Architects are very well known for, creating an iconic new home for the municipal government of Changsha to host events and provide a platform for local and international artists to show off their works.
Stepping into this new cultural precinct is like being transported into a futuristic world of serpentine forms and immaculate surfaces, which guide the pedestrian flow ways to a convergence point at the dramatic central courtyard, social gathering place and forum.
Understanding the movement of people as a flow, and using Architectural design to order and provide a framework for a sinuous urban experience which is rich with opportunities for networking, interacting and connectivity. The environment stimulates ones imagination and creativity, opening up new mystical possibilities that could beforehand, never have been imagined without urbanism and Architecture like this.
I was fortunate to figuratively lose myself at this cultural park in October 2019.
