Common ash - leaves & branches by Exeter library - October 2018
Common ash is found across Europe, from the Arctic Circle to Turkey. It is the third most common tree in Britain. It is currently being affected by Chalara dieback of ash, a disease caused by the Hymenoscyphus fraxineus fungus (previously Chalara fraxinea).
When fully grown, ash trees can reach a height of 35m. Tall and graceful, they often grow together, forming a domed canopy. The bark is pale brown to grey, which fissures as the tree ages. Easily identified in winter by smooth twigs that have distinctively black, velvety leaf buds arranged opposite each other.
It is dioecious, meaning that male and female flowers typically grow on different trees, although a single tree can also have male and female flowers on different branches. Both male and female flowers are purple and appear before the leaves in spring, growing in spiked clusters at the tips of twigs.

Black GIs in Exeter
Crystal Carter tells the story of the hundreds of Black GIs who came to Exeter, in south west England, during the Second World War. The GIs found themselves segregated by the river, with Black soldiers on the West, and White soldiers on the East. Military Police patrolled the bridge and stopped them from crossing.

Phillips Exeter Choir and Orchestra Debut in Oxford on 8 March
Phillips Exeter Academy Concert Choir is a 45-voice mixed chorus, performing a wide range of choral music from the 16-century through to contemporary choral works. Directed by Kristopher Johnson, the choir is the school’s leading choral ensemble with a choral body representative of the various states and countries found at the school. In the past few years, the choir has performed premieres of new creations by student and alumni composers, sung choral masterpieces with professional orchestras and soloists and undertaken service-oriented tours in the southwest United States. The choir has received coaching from artists such as New York Polyphony, Skylark Ensemble, Blue Heron and Roomful of Teeth.
Phillips Exeter Academy Chamber Orchestra is one of the Academy’s premier instrumental ensembles, presenting a range of classical, romantic and modern works. Under the baton of Rohan Smith, the orchestra has collaborated and performed with the Grammy-nominated string ensemble A Far Cry and received coaching from conductor Michael Barrett.
The orchestra and choir are often heard in collaboration, presenting the great choral works including Mozart’s Requiem and C-minor Mass, Faure’s Requiem and Handel’s Chandos Anthems. Phillips Exeter Academy Concert Choir has toured extensively, most recently visiting Vietnam and Hong Kong, Québec and California.
March 2019 will mark the Phillips Exeter Academy’s first tour to the United Kingdom, presented by Classical Movements.
The concert is free, with a retiring collection for Oxfam local.
